Ramkumar Perumanam: It's definitely in Neelamani, it was confirmed by Ganesh/Kumaresh's Dad in India.
Anu: Naalai Ulagam is from Lovebirds(*rring Prabu Deva and Nagma, filmed in London, MD AR Rahman). It is set in Kaafi Raagam.

Geetha,
Neela Mani is a Janya of Sarasangi and goes like SR2M1PD1N3S+. 'Nalamthana...' seems to use D2 also in the charaNam and even N2 (PuNNpatta seithiai kettavudan). Am I going wrong somewhere ?
BTW, where can I get info on raagas using multiple swarams of the same kind (chromatic?) like D1,D2 N1,N3 etc ? Any info you can part with will be extremely helpful.

Hi,
I think there is a variant of Neelamani that uses Sa ri2 ma1 pa dha1 dha2 sa. This scale is the one used in chinnan chiru kiliye. The dha 2 is very slight, towards the end...
Neelamani is tonic shift equivalent to mishra sivaranjani: use the pa of shivaranjani as sa. Mishra sivaranjani uses ga3 once in a while. To me Nalanthaana is in the sivaranjani scale. But, like Geetha, you could be hearing it in the neelamani scale. Depends on where you pitch your sa. Though, the music preceeding the song seems to indicate that sivaranjani is the scale...
Sriram:
As far as I know, Piloo is the only totally chromatic scale. You should probably look towards hindustani music. As far as I know, there is only one film song that is completely chromatic.

Hari, what I actually needed was , info on Ragams with variants like you mentioned , Neelamani (D1 & D2). Is there any material available on the net or you could give me ?

Hi Sriram,
I guess I misunderstood your question. I don't know if such info as you need is available on the net. I can think of one ragam: hamsanadham. The copy book version seems to be from nitimati: sa ri2 ma2 pa ni2 ni3 sa. However, most carnatic singers avoid ni2, de-vivadhifying, so to speak!
Film music uses a variant with dha2 in place of ni2 (also throwing in ma1 for good measure).
I will let you know as and when I think of something in this class. One thing you can do is to look up the raga prahavam book for ragaas with multiple janaka ragas.

Dhandapani:
I had a look at Sowmya and Shashikiran's
Carnatica material: a CD-ROM and a video cassette
(probably the same content as in the VCD). I was
unimpressed! To me, the set of audio cassettes
by S. Rajeswari, Lecturer, TN Music College, and
released by HMV, is much more useful (and much
cheaper too).

Hari, belated thanks. Is SindhuBhairavi not a chromatic scale ? Does not a version of this raaga have all the 12 notes ? Again, I was looking for raagas with variations too, like Desh could have N2 and N3 sometimes etc.

SL:
Does Sindhu bhairavi have M2 ? If it is included you may be right.
Just wishing that the raga experts in the thread visit my Malayalam songs page to give me the ragas of various songs I have in it. I have tried a preliminary one.

Guys: In the song Oranjaaram from Kakai Chiraginile, there is a dialogue, where the guy asks SPB 'why have you changed the Raga to Desh now'. Did I understand this right? It's just that the whole song is in Desh, so why the question?
