IR,
The popular Madurai Mani Iyer 'Notes' are set to 'Kadana Kutoohalam' and not 'ShankarAbharaNam'.
It is of course a 'Janya Ragam' of the 29th Melakarta, ShankaraabharaNam.
ArOhaNam : S R2 M1 D2 N3 G3 P S
AvarOhaNam: S N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S
'Raghu Vamsa Sudha' is a famous song in this raga usually played by Instrumentalists in concerts.
The song in question, 'Ulavum Thendral KAtrinilE' is perhaps closest to Kadana Kutoohalam.
If I remember correctly, the soundtrack of movie 'Thillana MOhanAmbAL' also has a 'note' piece in Nadaswaram similar to (or the same notes as) Madurai MaNi Iyer's.
ARR's 'Kandu Kondain' title song has a good amount of Kadana Kutoohalam in it. Listen to its fast paced violin interlude, before it drifts to another raga.

Another query:
Does anyone know the raga of the following 2 songs? They seem to be of the same raga:
(looks like an interesting mix of combination of 'bhoopaLam' and 'latAngi'?)
1. 'VeRu idam ThEdip pOvALO' (VANi Jayaram, Movie: 'Manitharil Ithanai NiRangaLa', MD: MSV) and
2. 'SugamAna Sinthanayil IdamAna uRavOdu' (SPB, Janaki; Movie: Taxi Driver, MD: MSV)
Thanks

Neels - I am pretty sure that the English notes by MMI is in Shankarabaranam. More so because, I had been to a concert of TV Shankaranarayanan (Nephew of MMI) and he sang this note and someone from the audience asked him the raga - He said that it is set in Shankarabharanam with plenty of "anya" swaras! This is originally a composition by Muthaiah Bhagavathar.
You may want to check this too: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/8424/carnatic/c1340.html
I also have a recording by thiruvizha jaishankar and the label says that this is in Shankarabharanam...

IR:
1. 'VeRu idam ThEdip pOvALO' is available in
Dhool.com, under "Vani Jayaram Sings for MSV" section. The site's server seems to be down now.
2. 'Sugamana Sindhanayil' is a classic from MSV. I am not sure if the female lead is Vani or Janaki. The movie was 'Taxi Driver (1978)' starring Sridevi and Jai Shankar. I am unable to locate the number on the Net.
The song goes like this:
SugamAna sindhanaiyil idhamAna uRavOdu sorgangaL varuginrana;
Manampoala mAngalyam ini veRu edhu vENdum mAlaigaL maNakkindrana
maNa mAlaigaL maNakkindrana...
The composition has a lot of IR flavor in it and for sometime I thought it was IR who composed it.
Another song that I wasn't sure about the MD was:
"Engum niRaindha iyaRkayil Enna SugamO
pOngi varum Chinnan chiRu uLLangaLil enna kanavO
eNNangaLil enna suvayO?"
a duet by Yesudas and JAnaki.

Engum niRaindha is from idhu yeppidi irukku starred by Jaishankar and Sridevi, the MD is indeed IR.

Neels - Listened to Veru Idam Thedippovalo - Sounds like a combination of Charukesi and Sarasangi (Sa ri2 ga3 ma1 pa dha1 ni2/Ni3 Sa - are the notes I hear)

haris - it would be a janya of 32 ragavardhini or 34 Vaagadeeshwari - guess the scale for this raaga would be something like this Sa Ga3 Ma1 Pa Ni2 Sa - Sa Ni2 pa ma1 ga3 ri3 sa - am not sure if this is a valid scale and if this has a name!! These are the notes I could spot!

'mAdathile kanni mAdathilE' from Veera
is a combination of kalyani & hamsadhwani
- From: Neels (@ 203.199.87.3)
on: Tue Mar 27 01:00:59 EST 2001
'MAdhathilE' (at least the pallavi, as I forgot how the charaNams go) sounds like 'BrindAvana SAranga'. It probably has some extra notes too.
Compare it with the duet by TMS & P. B. Srinivas: 'Pon onRRu KaNdEn', which is Brindvana SAranga.
'Vasantha kAla KOlangaL' is Shuddha DhanyAsi.

Neels: Maadathile cannot be 'brindavana saranga', you can distinctly hear "M1 G3 R3 S" phrase. Should be some raga close to nattai, jog family.
- From: IR (@ 4.3.189.162)
on: Tue Mar 27 06:35:36 EST 2001
has to be vaagadeeshwari family and not chalanaattai family cause of N2. Nattai fly takes N3.
I do not think it is anywhere near kalyani/hamsadhwani. and not Brindhavana Saaranga either

It also resembles 'Gambira Naatai' coz , sounds somewhat same like 'innum ennai enna seiya pogirai' (singaravelan) ,.. any comments

What are the ragas of the songs:
1. 'Theertha Karai ThanilE Shenbaga pushpaNgaLe' (Yesudas, MD: IR, Movie: 'Thai Pongal')?
2. 'Oru VAnavil pOlE En VazhvilE vandhAi' (Jayachandran, Janaki, MD: IR, Movie: KAtrinile varum Geetam?)
- From: Neels (@ 203.199.87.3)

3. 'Oru Devatai Vandathu ManachiRai koondai thiranthu chendradu' by IR, SPB, Asha Bhosle, film: Naan Sonnathe Sattam.
Sounds like Hamir KalyaNi. Or is it some other raga?
You can find it in Dhool.com. A very nice piece.

Vidhya,
Consider the line, 'Kalaimaanin uLLam kalayAmal', the progression is not Kalyani.
It has some alien swarams. Does that make it a Hindustani raga like Yaman KalyAN?

IR: why not we take it as D3 ?
- From: IR (@ 4.3.189.162)
on: Thu Mar 29 06:50:01 EST 2001
RR - In theory - you could :-) - but when you have notes like these and raga does not have another nishadham, I do not think we could call that note dha3 and not Ni2. I am not sure if there is any raga with Pa Dha3 Sa prayogam - by default they get set to ni2 if dha3 is not followed by Ni3...
Neels - Oru Vaanavil - song part of it seems to be mostly in Kalyani - but you are right - fromt he start of the song - there are tons of foreign notes - not just Yaman notes (Ma1) - think I heard a dha1 too...
Oru Devadhai vandhadhu is a very beautiful song indeed! Thanks for the info.. It does sound like Hameer Kalyani.. Would listen to theertha karai thanile today :-)

"Vaseegara" from Minnalee is in NATABAIRAVHI - listen out for similarities with NENJINILE from UYIRE(JIYA JALE from Dil Se).

hello!
i've had this major doubt for almost 2 years now...
there are songs which can have 2 raagas?
eg.:andhi mazhai pozhugiradhu
if you take the starting swaram (corr. to the word "andhi")as Ma,then the raagam is vasantha.the 1st line goes like this:
MaMaMaMa GaMaDaMaGa GaMaDaMaGaGaDaMaMaGaReReSaSa
but it really didn't strike me that this was vasantha until i saw the list of raaga based film songs.
to me it sounded like panthuvaraali!(without Re)
see,if you take the 1st swaram as Sa,
the swaram for the 1st line would be:
SaSaSaSa NiSaGaSaNi NiSaGaSaNiNiGaSaSaNiDaDaPaPa..
so,the same song can have different raagas in diff. pitches(shruthis)?
another eg.:margazhi poove(may maadam)
it is hindolam if the 1st swaram is Sa.:
the 1st line will be:
SaGaMaDaDa GaMaDaMaGa GaMaDaMa...
but if the 1st swaram is taken as Pa,the raagam
will be sudhha dhanyasi!
1st line:PaNiSaGaGa NiSaGaSaGaSaNi....
please try playing this on the keyboard -you'll get a better picture of what i'm saying!
so,experts!what do you say?how do we decide the raagam of a song?
even kannamoochi-only if you take the 1st swaram as Da,it is naattaikurunji.
