A JOURNEY WITH K.V. MAHADEVAN

This is an effort, in a modest way, to trace the great contributions of KVM to the Tamil Film Music. As Tamil Film songs originate from the Tamil films, I am aslo taking the liberty of discussing the background of the films where KVM had comsposed- with the intention of adding spice. I believe this article would serve as a nostalgic tonic to the fans of old songs.

  SOME FILMS OF LATER 1960s
  
  THAAYE UNAKKAKA (1966)
  This is the Tamil Version of Ballade of the Soldier, a Russian story and recreated into Tamil by Kannadasan. Kannadasan wanted to have his own way of freely composing songs the way he wanted, and the songs came out very well, though the movie dod not mint at the box office.The main star is Sivakumar, R.S. Manohar, V.K Ramasamy, Pushpalatha and Manorama. Sivaji Ganesan, SSR Muthuraman,Nagesh, Padmini, Vijauakumari, Devika and Jayalalitha appear in very small roles.

  SSR, Vijayakumari, SV Rangarao, Ravichandran, VK Ramasamy and Nagesh are the main stars in this movie. There are five songs in this film of which, in my humble opinion only one won the hearts of the fans. And that is a S. Janaki’s famous song:

  KAN KANDA DEIVAM (1967)

  PANAMA PASAMA (1968)
  This was a great consolation for many, including KVM. The film was a silver jubilee hit and was released in Russia as well. After a long break Saroja Devi appeared again, and those who had sleepless nights because of her rushed to see if she had aged in any way. Her first appearance was in skirt. Perhaps I am speaking for myself! Some of the best songs of KVM are here.

  This is the song that became an instant hit. The \vinyl records were sold in black market for RS30. LR Eswary added more popularity to her already popular name and fame. But Kannadasan who wrote it regretted. He said the taste of the fans of the cine songs had gone very bad, as they seem to have a craze for double meaning songs:

  Thunaivan has some good songs. The song Maruthamalaiyane by TMS and P Suseela won award of Tamilnadu government.

  This film was a great hit for the good story line and the rare appearance of Girubanantha Vaariyaar and Sundrambaal. In many cinema halls people went into trance and the Chinese workers had to use vibhoothi to stop the trance. This was another attraction for this movie, at least in Malaysia. (What surprised me was people getting into trance for the song Ambikaye Eeswariye from Pattikkada Pattanama)

  kula viLakku.. I remember having a very sad storyline
  with Saroja Devi sacrificing her life for everyone
  around her. Ranga Rao, who acts as her father has

  There is a PS solo for Lakshmi (debut) in JEEVANAAMSAM. I think it is either "Iraivaa unakkoru keLvi enge nee maraindhayO" Or "Malarum mangaiyum oru Jadhi". Lakshmi, a handicapped, sings this in the back yard of the house where sivakumar also looks at here from behind. Please confirm.

  "Verenna ninavu Unnai Thavira Ingu veredhu nilavu peNnai thavira" from SUBATHINAM was sung by TMS, ALR and PS only. Not LRE.
