  It is a ragamalika. I hear panthuvaraaLi,sriranajani (not sure), sindhubhairavi and kaambodhi. I have never sat down to listen to the entire song. IR, please elaborate. The last phrase is very similar to a mallu classic by KJY - 'kaattilE paazmuLam thaNdil'. I shall try to get that link.

  The song 'avaravar vaazhkayil' from Paandavar bhoomi sounds to me like Sivaranjani. Also, the song 'thozha thozha' in that movie begins with sivranjani and swifts to Kaapi later. Correct me if i am wrong.
  
  (Looks Bharathwaj leased sivaranjani from SA rajkumar for this movie..a lots of usage..)

  Rajesh...i too felt "avaravar vaazhkayil" to be a good sivranjani (plain when the violin interludes start after the pallavi)..not sure about "thoza thoza".
  
  Any clues on songs in "Alli thantha Vaanam"? (Thom thom thitthithom) is

  Is Song Kandukondein Kandukondein from the film Kandukondein Kandukondein based on raga Nalina kanthi ?
  the song starts like this
  Sa Ga Ri Ma | Pa Ni Da Sa+

  MS, naks : listened to the entire song in Musicindiaonline. naks, did not hear a madhyamavathi or hamsanadham in that song.

  yes ranjani is right. I wrote it wrongly as sriranjani. In fact this portion "enakkaga nee azalaam" is very similar to "ranjaniyai azaiththEn paaraayo..en naavil nadam puriya vaaraayo" phrase of "sugamaana raagangaLE" (Mrudhanga chakravarthi) - another great ragamalika composition by MSV. I have to somehow get my hand on this song somehow. VJ's another great number.

  Vanna nilavae vaigai nadhiyae is from Paadaadha thaeneekkaL.
  
  In Part 15 of Classical Illayaraaja article by Srirangam Lakshmi Narayanan, he terms vanna nilavae to be in VIJAYANAGARI. Here is the excerpts from it:
  
  
  Vijayanagari is a janyam of Hemavathi. Actually, this ragam was "discovered" by Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar in this century. He just omitted Nishadham in Hemavathi and called it as Vijayanagari. There is a famous M.K.T song soppanavazhvil magizhndhu in this ragam. Illayaraja tuned one Vijayanagari in paadaadha thaeneekkal. The song is vanna nilavae vaigai nadhiyae. He has beautifully used the Ma2 of this ragam. But, from puritans point of view, he has done a mistake. He has also used Ga3 to give a very sad appeal to the song. That is not permissible.
  
  Vijayanagari is very closely related to Sivaranjani. While Sivaranjani is a janyam of the 22nd melam (Karaharapriya), Vijayanagari is a janyam of the 58th (the prathimadhyamam of the 22nd). Sivaranjani is also a very "soga" ragam.

  IR Fan - Vanna Nilavae is based on Mishra Shivaranjani and Vijayanagari - it is not set in Vijayanagari alone - infact if you listen to the score, you would feel that the song was intended to be in Mishra Shivaranjani and then the MD chose to use Ma2 in the charaNams (making it vijayanaagari) for that special soga feel... this is IMO

  2)Or aayiram Yaanai - Hamsanandhi+Panthuvarali+Vasantha? :-) This is purely in PanthuvaraLi
  3)Engengo Kaalgal Sellum - Keeravani

  5)Kalli Adi - ??? Again - not set in one ragam - has traces of Kaapi, Keeravani, gowrimanohari etc... it would be a good idea to say the MD got innovative with the notes in this song instead of sticking to a raga!
