Another (true) spokesman of janta says-
IR is history since 1994 - Sure, he created one.
ARR is soon getting into history with duds like
PP,Parasuraam, Udaya, KVirus .
Move over ARR and pave way for better MDs like
YSR,VS, HJ, Bharatwaj.
Janta don't feel HJ,YSR is aping ARR- Otherwise why would we make minnale, saamy, kaaka kaaka ,KK,Thulluvathoilamai,Aprilmaadhathil
hits?Even if they do who cares?
( As if ARR only has the divine right to ape ACE OF BASE and many more). HJ's,YSR's rythm, tunes are catchy. That is what matters.
Atleast TFM hearing junta is clearly for VS/YSR/HJ/Bharatwaj.
Saami/KK / Kaaka Kaaka/ Whistle are definitely ahead of Noise BOYS in sales inspite of some self appointed spokesman of janta trying invain.
So janta says -
IR- Day before yesterday-80's
ARR - Yesterday- 90's
YSR(includes VS/HJ/Baratwaj - Today
Yaar?Yaar? - Tomorrow
Makkal theerpe - .......

Haha the biggest joke is someone claiminh manaselam bringing Tears to their eyes.
If this is snot stupidity and absurdity then what else in the world is?
Franky,I have enjoyed IR's azhagi, kasi, julee ganapathy, SMK beter than other MDs album, but manasellam was so bad!
IR can never be excused for ripping of from Mozart very generously and diplomaically adding that Mozart was his big inspiration.
While the IR-campers have still not given an "IOTA OF EVIDENE" to the cliam that ARR "copies" how did they fail to realise IR's Mozart rips in music?
Hmmmm Actually I can answer that myself... When these arr bashers refuse to even listen to some embellished modern indian-international music of ARR, how do you expect these IR worshippers to come of of their villages and hear Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and find IR's strip-offs.
ppll like xml, ambleen, rajasaranam, dont waste time posting or replying to me. I wont bother reading your ridiculous ir worshipping stupidity. Like saamy said "unga kuda pesarathey kevalama ninaikiren"
I hope you dont claim some nonsense like "I ran away w/out replying " and stuff like you usually claim in your illusion abt IR's monotonous music!
wrt topic, I am glad that even YSR has shown IR how you can grow in TFM. I loe YSR and I think his clever attitude in tring to go more global and international has won him the honors.
HAIL YSR!!!!!!!!!!!!
atleast hope IR learns from his son and realises how the stubborn attitude of his fans cost him dearly in his growth.
ppl like sreeni and maddy, dont waste time answering "sour grapes howling" of these ir-blinded "music" listeners. IR did not goto hindi. leave alone going international. and quite expectedly the camp came up with its classical (ir-like monotonous) reply that hindi and intl recognition is not required.
hahahahaha. Congratulating YSR for trouncing IR and showing them that the international/global slant is what makes music sucessful.

hey tamil makkal, then where does Boys figure in ur arguement..... the sales of latest albums of YSR+HJ+VS+Bharadwaj= ARR's BOYS.... wat do u have to say?

IR is a phenom and thats true.
But who is responsible for not projecting his brillance to he world? HIS FANS!!!
By being stubborn and encouraging monotony in the name of jingoistic tamil pride, IR was never let toproject his talent.
YSR has definitely "taught" IR what you need to do to project your music in this modern society! Streamline it with a modern international theme!!! IR must have learnt that already! ofcourse from his ownson YSR!
YSR's next film is Kurumba or something. cant wait

Well..I dont think we are going anywhere disparaging each other's tastes and preferences. If people wanted to compare-and-contrast IRs music vs ARRs there were appropriate threads. Even though the discussion seems to be veering away from the title of the thread. I would like to share my views on TFM in general and IRs music.
1) From the early days of Tamil film music, the direction was set as ICM and WCM fusion. There were some white guys who decided at that time film music needed WCM and anybody wants to be a MD needed to learn WCM (ref. VijayaBhaskar's interview)
2) Initially just strings were added to the background of the song, later on much more integration happened.
3) TFM MDs think of them (atleast used to) as composers. Which means they would compose a song in a raagam (a la krith/keerthanai). This is exactly like what a western classical composers do when they pick a scale.
4) Ofcourse, rhythm was very important to catch the attention of the masses. So new arrangements were sought after. If you listen to LoveBirds song in anbE vaa. You can see the rhythm accompaniment changes at the last line of every charanam.
5) How can one ignore the influence of the West ? Lots of songs were done with waltz/rockroll/twist kind of time/beats.
6) New rhythm arrangements were used in the pallavi or interludes to attract/maintain the attention of the audience. Still, indian drums (tabla/dholak/mridhangam) were used in the charanams. I guess this was done to maintain the 'indian tone' of the song or the MDs felt that they went well with the melodies.
All these were happening even before IR. And now IR what does IR do ?
He does not change much. He just follows the above direction.
And about IR's music -
1) Yes, the instruments do not change much, guitar/drums/strings etc..
2) Yes, the melodies are very indian based on raagams. but quite a few novel melodies were tuned
3) Yes, lots of songs had very simple orchestration, just table but the tune was 'composed' even though it was not very unique. (Understand close to 4000 songs were done)
4) Yes, recording quality was not consistent..
Inspite of all these IR had a stranglehold on the market for 10-15 years..
1) Same instruments, but unique sounds were created with combination of instruments..
2) Songs from a film had their own character. ramarajan movie song, kamal movie song, rajini movie song..
3) Songs were being produced at the rate of two per day ..simple orchestration and 'non-poetic' lyrics did not appeal to a wider set of audience. And too many 'exposed' the style of the MD too much.
4) Recording quality was very good whenever the director/producer took interest in it.
Still IR too songs to the level of a composition.
Fantastic preludes, pure melody based interludes (no rhythm/drums) and nice conclusions made songs an acoustic pleasure. The composer was confident enough (misplaced :)) to have the attention of the audience there was even a complete silence for a few seconds in a song (he is quoted as saying, 'I use music to create silence').
BGM provided a bigger canvas for IR to experiment than songs..
By this time, IR was slowly losing the audience..his focus on melody/harmony did not go well with an emerging youthful audience who are interested in western rhythms..
Popular songs like pothuvaaga en manasu thangam or 'wish you a happy new year..ilamai itho itho ..' looked passe in accented english.
No more was it a requirement to tune songs in raagam ..people wanted new sound ...new MDs flourished armed with keyboards/drum machines/sample CDs..
TFM as a genre is dead !!!! A new trend is born..
(I will continue later)..

sreeni,
if ur still here, i agree with u that no musical form is in its purest form. we v got only three kinds of insturments - percussion, wind and string. every culture gives rise to its own style of music based on their socio, historical and many other factors. like a parai which is a tamil cultural instrument and drums being african.
same thing applies to every other field like arts & literature.nothign can be in its purest form . even our own folk music has different variations according to the peoples needs and the factors ive listed to u in an earlier post. like a fishermans song is different frm a farmers song. we try to accomodate all these styles into a broader sense for our understanding as tamil music or hindustani or african music or western.
ur arguing for a world musical form which is emerging as a part of globalization.this musical form tries to enslave every human kind in its wider market reach for the ulterior motives of larger conglomerates. if it had been a natural process in which this musical form wud ve been created id dare not speak a word against it. but this musical form is emerging only for the past 10+ yrs after the speeding up of the process of capitalism, moving over to its next stage called imperialism.
when IR introduced us with WCM there was no globalization. there were no MNCs like Sony or Oriental here to make music a saleable commodity. yes it was sold at those times too. do u want to know the price of a cassette when i started buying cassettes in mid 80's ??? it was Rs.15. for almost 7/8 yrs it was around 15 to 18 only. do u want to know the price of a audio cassette after GATT treaty signed in 1993. it suddenly shot upto Rs.40/Rs.50 in a span of just 2 yrs. never being able to be reached by a common man. but it was selling like hot cakes.who were buyin them???? who were selling them. why did Sony entered here to promote ARR with his Vande matram album. wat has sony got to do with our national song? - our national song became a commodity suddenly . even his style was changed frm a normal man to look like a yuppie with long hairs. sreeni or MADDY wud not like these questions but there r some people here who like to ask these questions and find an answer. it was a silent war waged on us and our country.
imperailism has found a new method to exploit our people without even entering into our country. now there is no EAST INDIA COMPANY. but there r many companies whose motives r nothing less than EAST INDIA COMPANY.it was established in 1600, it took a long time like around 350 yrs for us to get the idea of freedom.
GATT treaty was signed in 1993 - it may take longer for us to understand that we r being enslaved and it may take longer time for us to fight our freedom struggle. till then enjoy ARRs music. when the war is over we will call him a TRAITOR.we will hail IR as a WARRIOR.
MADDY
i cud say surely say that ARR said that statement in a kumudam/ananda vikatan issue i dont remember exactly which one. ill get back with the exact date of issue ASAP.

MADDY
well i happened to get a similar statement frm him in www.rahmanonline.com interview section under the topic - "i like to do fusion music" here goes the bomb
Q. Where do you see yourself in the Hindi film industry
A. I'll do only two to three films a year. And my music is completely different. But after Roja, I think I know what the Hindi crowd likes. Music is international, only cultures are different.
even a kid will know that if cultures r different music will be different.but ARR doesnt
