  I still remember seeing the lyrics of this song appearing in 'aandip paNdAram pAdugirAr' column in 'thinath thanthi' those days. I think it is penned by Kannadasan.

  I think it is from Shanthi Nilayam. It was haunting me for a long time and one day I watched Lalgudi playing on the TV a raagam called Misra Sivaranjani and I could immediately match it to this song. Can you get hold of this song and post it Neyar Viruppam?

  marakka mudiyumA is kalaignar's film right ? I think this ultimate tearjerker was directed by murasoli mARan. There is another good song in the film : kAkidha Odam kadalalai meedhu pOvadhu pOle moovarum pOvOm. All songs were by kalaignar.

  'Vasantha kalam varumo' is based on the raga Valaji (Kalavathi in Hindustani classical).There are many beautiful Hindi songs in this raga although I cannot recollect any tamil film songs off hand.This film is a real first rate effort by T.K.Ramamurthy.

  I think it's not really valaji. If you listen to PS's swaras, there is a rare R1. Could be kalaavathi. (FYI.. 'pongum kadalosai' is in valaji)

  Foolish of me to forget KJY's humming. I have never heard him only hum like you said. While on the subject of songs based on ragaas, how about this one by PS based on Behaag:

  Kandu varavendumadi thangame thangam
  
  If I am not mistaken, that is a piece by Bharathiyar. The music is by G.Ramanathan. It contains an amazing piece in Veena.

  Bhasker, S Janaki is very popular in Bangalore also. She has sung a lot of Kannada, Malayaalam, Tamil and Telugu songs. And 'Kannan mana nilayai' is by S Janaki :))

  Bhasker,the pallavi of "Kannan..." seems to be in Abheri. The stanza "neram muzhuthilum.." is in Behag.
  SK, no problem. I am relatively free these days.I think I need to configure my real player properly before I start listening to your tasteful collection of songs, superb indeed!
  
  SK, Rameshb, please try uploading "Thedi varum theiva sugam" from nimirnthu nil, a super duet. Do you have the non-cinema version of "en keLvikenna bathil"? This version had a much superior arrangement. Any songs from 'Jenova' will be welcome.
  
  BTW, I too think that 'Vasantha Kaalam' is not Valaj though it could remind one of 'Govinda..', a Purandaradasar Krithi based on Valaji. One request, please do not watch this movie, even if you have been forced to do so at a gun-point. First of all, the song is absent and the movie itself can drive a person to the throes of insanity.
