Please listen to the following songs again and again and you will clearly understand the depths, breadth and heights to which Ilayaraja has gone like no other creative genius has. This is a real lesson in the most exceptional and complex of musical composition delivered just simply like that by IR for the ordinary listener:
Chandirarum Suriyanum by IR in AVADHARAM (find one like this in the next galaxy if anyone can)
Kannalen Kaadhal by KJY & SJY in Aathma
Kai veesum Thamarai by SPB & SJ in Kanni Rasi
Nilavu Onru Kanden - as above
Yen Kanavina Kellu by Hariharan in Desiya Geetham
The Dance duet in Raasayya (absolutely stunning)
Nandavanthil by SPB in Annai Oru Aalayam
Sembaruthi Poove by Mano & Sunandha in Sembaruthi
Nila Kaayum Neram Saranam by SPB & Sunandah in Sembaruthi
O Nenjame by SJ & DChakravarthi in Enakaha Kaathiru
Yengum Niraindha KJY & SJ in Idhu Eppadi Irukku
Vellin Nilave SPB & UR in Nandavan Theru
and, I am telling you this is just touching the surface, but these compositions require a lot of listening to know that evey other composer, band or group or act or whatever or anybody is just a speck of dust in the shore that of IR's ocean of music! Anyone can challenge me with any song of any other composer of this earth and tell me if I am wrong.
Long Live the Avataram of Ilayaraja

Friends,
Can you pls give me few songs of Maestro with 'Ekkaalam' instrument used in it? If you ask what 'Ekkaalam' instrument is, it is used in 'Maanu Tholu' of film 'Kaasi' in the first interlude. Or the instrument used just before the beginning of war or welcoming some one. One of my American friends liked(or mesmerized) by that instrument's sound and expecting songs with that music.

STS,
You mean the instrument used in Annathe aadurar from Aboorva sagothararlal, am I right? I think it a wind instrument and called Dhundhubi in Sanskrit.

If everyone could understand and have a desire to learn Math, then we would see Ramanujan eulogized by the public. Only a few thousand in this world (mathematicians) understand the frontiers of Math that Ramanjuan conquered. Even today after nearly 80s years since his death, Ramanujan is considered tthe Mozart of Math. He rediscovered 100 years of math before him and left behind anoterh 200 years of math (still to be unravelled) So is the borderless genius of IR really understood by a few here in the forum. First of all,it is aksing for investment of time to enjoy the music, and then the understanding follows.
as i say, IR's genius is of the future! (Are we seeing another Shakespeare till date?)

I fully agree with Ravi K.S. Ravichandran....coincidental feelings indeed.....
Cud we expect most of his songs to be digitally recorded now.....they will simply blow away today's so-called FAST stuff..many of RD Burman's are being done so, in Hindi....why not IR's ?

I think Arif meant to say that IR music is long gone not IR himself. In MSV's time people used to say that he will be remembered for ever bur IR has changed that and now history repeats. It's only very few people, who can't accept the defeat talks lot of rubbish. World has changed and IR's music is dead, however hard he tried to revive it.

I dont expect everyone to agree what the title of this thread says, but I am now listening to some IR hits on CD, as I write, especially 'dheiveega rAgam ..thevittAtha pAdal' wow..as the lyrics say it sure is a divine tune..you guys should not fight but just listen to the innumerable hits of MDs..even if they are not 'cool' now and enjoy the music. Yeah..enjoy the music ..now back to the same song :) :)

arun_uk,
Yes, it would indeed apply to me....if I too went around concluding, without any logic, that someone will be greatest in an era which I can't foresee in any logical way, ie. the future.

ok the king is dead...so now u can leave tis place and go elsewhere to move on or look forward to someone else's xerox music.
everyone knows after arr emerged, what kinda fans do the new musicians(note:NOT COMPOSERS) have. Like these musicians themselves, you too come and go. Music won't flow in the blood of yours or fans like you. Superficial admiration exists. It won't get you far in terms of music aprreciation.

and, when i meant the greatest creative genius i meant pick any field of endevour. Pick a Picasso, a Bach or Shakespeare, IR is on par as to the greatness of his achievement with these greatests in their fields, however and here is the but: But, no genius has ever enthralled a lover of the arts and sciences so much as our Maestro and I assure you don't even dream of anyone else doing that in the next 100 years at least. Atleast in my case, a genuine and a deeply involved afficionado of the arts and sciences.

what sheer exaggeration of IRs acheivements!!!
As if there is nobody close to him in quality of music. IMO MSV,KVM,Naushad have achieved just as much if not more (the more being CONSISTENCY of music - unlike IRs recent trash, atleast for the last 7-8 years)
Typical HCFIR kinda thoughts and remarks - absolutely vacuous and bombastic!!

What's sheer exaggeration???
I wonder if you could kindly check out what some recognised experts'(unlike self-proclaimed experts like us in this forum)have had to say about IR's achievements- http://www.raajangahm.com/accolades.html
Then tell us if they are all "absolutely vacuous & bombastic". Are you for a fact aware that no real music expert has ever passed derogatory comments about IR's achievements???
I know you were only responding to the the slightly 'superfluous' comments from the previous post. But take care to watch what you say!

Thank heavens you've progressed from last year to leave Vijayabhaskar, Chandrabose, SA Rajkumar, Deva, Shankar-Ganesh et al out of your list of 'equals' that you compare IR with! We're blessed with relief:)
"IRs recent trash, atleast for the last 7-8 years" - If this not vacuous and bombastic, what is?
I assume you're still very much living out of TN, immune to the success of Bharathi, Friends, Kaasi, Azhagi etc. in the last couple of years.

am i asking myselff why do i have the intermittent outbursts of this emotion in the forum over the last 5 years. simply because i am sailin on this vast ocean of IR's music and i continue in the wave of discovery of many many songs of the Gnani! so, pardon my exhultation in the forum, I pity myself sometimes, hey we can't live in self pity. sail away and enjoy the tides and show the excitement.
one song i discovered recently: (i feel stupid i had missed tthis one.) Unnai Kaanum Neram Nenjam from Unnai Naan Sandithen. What a tune and check the superb first interlude, God Bless IR.

i read ur references to Ramanujan. I love maths - as a hobby. I do not know much about ramanujan's discoveries, at all. Maybe u could give me more info, or atleast suggest me a few websites.
As this DF is not a place for a discussion on maths, could u please email me at

arun_uk,
I read the whole discussion + fights on this thread again. I personally like IR the most, and have previously stated the reasons for that. However I repeat - "all other MDs being a speck of dust compared to IR" is a stupid, highly exaggerated and indeed,as LV says, "a vacuous and bombastic", statement. I wish such statements are not made in future. They can irritate fans of other MDs (who were tall figures in their own right).
Also about all those greats praising IR - and therefore people here concluding IR as the best, is quite naive. If all those people were asked about MSV or Salil Chaudhary or some other people, they would praise them with equally pleasing adjectives. (IR has himself praised MSV, Salil C on several occasions. Naushad - i read just yesterday in a filmfare article - said that Madan Mohan's songs in some old Hindi movie are so moving and innovative, that they are equal to the sum total of Naushad's own achievements.)
Moreover I have a problem with people taking the quotes of celebrities to buttress their arguments. Whatever most celebrities say while praising another one, is mostly suspect, highly subjective or highly exaggerated. Or else with some cloying, excessive kind of humility, that drips down like syrup from a jalebi. They are mostly not to be taken by their face value, especially if they are being used to create HIERARCHIES amongst artistes who are essentially in the same league.
However great (even if he is THE BEST) IR maybe, he is definitely not beyond music.
