Salil's "Sajnaa barkha bahaar aayee" is Lata's choice of her all time No.1 song. A grand enough tribute. Lata herself claims that she enjoyed singing for Salilda because of the unexpected twists and turns the melody took and how !!!
"Tasveer teri dil me" in Maya had a very unconventional antara. So many songs belong to this category like the comic song in Madhumati "Jungal me mor naacha". Lilting melodies like "Jaa re jaa re ud jaa re" in Maya, "Aasoon samajh ke kyon mujhe" and "Raat ne kya kya Khwab Dikhayee " sung by Talat had their place. The movie half-ticket interestingly had a song by Kishore "Le Gayee Dil" sung in a female's voice too. Kishore himself ranks "Koyi hotha " as one of his all time favourites. But what really captivated me was his ability to impart so much melody to folk music. "Jhilmi sang aankh ladi" ,"Ende nela pon maane" , "Saagara" etc. "Shyaama megame nee en prema", "Ne sa " KJY's first Hindi song had classicism too.

Sriram Lakshman:
KJY's first Hindi song was composed by Salilda, but the song was "Jaane man jaane man..." from CHHOTTI SI BAATH.

Can someone explain the haromonic melody patterns of Salil? I understand that even Illaiyaraja has not been able to attempt that style of melody.

Totally how many movies has Salilda composed for? How is that his songs are totally different compared to any other composer world over? Can you enlighten us?

Excellent Salil Chowdhury resource for all music lovers. If you love IR, then you will love Salil. He had done Dhoorathu Idi Muzhakkam, Azhiyatha Kolangal and Karumbu? The owner of the site is Gautam Chowdhury.

Dear Fan,
i don't know the exact nos but I must have missed
three or four movies in Hindi.Oh Yes !two I just remembered more, that's
1)Jeena yahan
2)Zindagi
Salilda also composed background music for many movies,The ones I can easily remember are,
a)Kaala Patthar(songs composed by Rajesh Roshan)
b)Mausam(songs composed by Great Madan Mohan)what a remebering music is this.
Salilda was a good arranger,He wasn't bonded with any particular music style, but I can feel that the traditional Russian music has a great contribution in his tunes(He used to love russian music)

Great work, someone starting a thread on the immortal salil, my all-time favourite national composer after IR. by national, i mean that salil's music truly broke barriers. he's as revered in kerala as he is in bengal and all over the hindi-speaking belt. even though i know next to nothing of bengali, i simply fell in love with a greatest bong hits collection from hmv. pure magic, guys. check it out, even if u know no bengali.
btw, one of salilda's best scores came in the mal movie "Chemmeen". All songs are gems. He's also composed music for several other mal movies, a 2-tape collection is available from hmv.
salilda, ami tomake bhalo bhaashi!!!

Dear Rajesh and Cram
I am joining both of you about Salilda. In my opinion the greatest Bong after Tagore and Ray.

Salil Chowdhury and Illaiyaraj are two absolute musical miracles. Illaiyaraja has a lot of style and structure learned fro Salil when he was a guitarist with Salil. In fact Illaiyaraja is a continuation of Salil. Thank God for these two geniuses of all time

Devdasi is indeed Salil. "Hear the Padarennu thedi alayum". Best carnatic song.

The trinity of Beethoven, Bach and Mozart were not comparable to each other, because each of the 3 greatest Maestros were distinct musical capstones one could never say that any of the three were greater than the other. Their musical content was bewildering. However, in India I would say Salil Choudhury(born into a very musically inclined family)may be the all time best, even though he was not prolific. Salil choudhury's melody was absolutely magical in melody and perfect in his overall content of his songs. You will rarely find a Salil interlude not becoming one with the main melody. Ultimate sweetness in the songs. Illayaraja (decided to make himself a composer only by age 27!) will be a close second for the sheer power, versatility, variety and brilliance in his compositions. Illayaraja has said that his musical ideas will last a 100 years or so. He himself has not admitted to the fact that his songs and melodies will stand the test of time. But, Salil's melodies and interludes are immortal and can never be brought out by anyone else I feel. But my wish is that both these immortal composers are enjoyed all over the world for years to come.

Raja Fan:
I tend to disagree. Sometime back I had asked some of you to point out some good Salil Choudhury numbers on the net. I think MS also contributed to the list. I could not spend much time listening to them, but of what I listened they were nowhere near Raja's class. Maybe there are some SC songs which are better than some of Raja's best. But I find it hard to believe that even one song of any MD could exist that I'd like better that IR's top 100 - and that's a conservative estimate.

This is probably the right point of time to poke my head and say I am going to upload the melodies of Salilda. There are 2 songs already available in my page under KJY's goldies. "Ni sa ga ma pa" is a fantastic melody and "Jaane man" is a fast paced number. I wish no Salil fan misses the first as it fetched (courtesy :SL) the first filmfare award for KJY.
IMO, he was a lilting melody maker. His output was variegated and his melodies stood out distinctly from the rest. It is written on thepamphlet accompanying the 2 CD set (golden collection) that LAta fainted after he heard the rendition of one of his bengali melodies! From then onwards she paired with im to give us some of the greatest hindi numbers (Aajaa re pardesi etc..)
IR and Salil, no comparison please! Salil, IMO has concentrated more on melody and his interludes are rarely remembered. It is probably because of the usage of excessive violins that has dragged us to compare him with IR. I would rather compare him with MSV, who was also dependent more on the melody of the tune than on the interludes.
Digression:
