Is Mahati Lazy?:-)) Perhaps yes!!!
Caution : Mahati doesn't assume any abilities within qualifying him as a good listener...but this is just a simple effort to get out of his laziness...
"Gam Ganapathy" applied contrasting lead melody variations through out the song. Orchestration flows like an extension of lead melody and that some lyrics were missing on them. Very smooth integration of ideas from different minds within the team. Production effort from this team is appreciable.
Song starts with gam ganapathy chants following into an inpirational devotional mood created with tremolo strings phrases interwoven beautiful arps...phrases are constructed to give shades of saveri and revathi...listener cannot attribute this section as mayamalavagowlai by grouping these 2 raga notes into it's nearest parent scale. Then into to kaapi scale and then to beautiful desh...This transition so far very smooth and logical. I like it till then...but then when it turns into saveri basically the gam ganapathy chant, this was not agreeable to my ears for this serious mood after such a pleasant desh phrase.
From then the Charanam goes into beautiful mayamalavagowlai...and then into kaapi and then into desh pleasant mood -> i was almost afraid that the song will again change into the chants of serious mood...but it's a turn orchestra with a nice bridge flows smoothly into mayamalavagowlai...perhaps this kind of turn in the earlier mentioned case would have been more amenable to the ears.
I like the way this song maintains a pattern in the melodic variation -> mayamalavagowlai -> Kaapi -> Desh...within 2 minutes, the song establishes this variation as unit of familiarity...any good listener shall get into the structure...This song has good structure...
Will this tune stay in your head after
listening:-)) that's hard to say because it's also an ability of the listener:-((
Perhaps there are many good listeners here who can talk about this music or any other music that's posted here for which they didn't respond...All those are really lazy:-))
If you don't want this thread to be extinct...we can't afford to be lazy in
- either making music or
- listening the music published here
- talking about the music that was heard
Have a good weekend...

I like the way Mahati speaks about Mahati in the 3rd person. Reminds me of Charles Barkley's quotes.

Here is my tune to Udhaya's lyrics: http://www.geocities.com/tangirags/Sindhippoagum.mp3
Since this time, I did not have a chance to listen to others' interpretations to get the pronunciation/mood right, mistakes are bound to be there. Hope you will excuse those and like the piece.

Diwakar:
Everytime I am surprised by your interpretation of music. You are the one who never ceases to amaze in giving new textures. I thorough liked your conception, but yes, vocals have to be improved. I will wait for the full version.
Kaumudi:
It has been a long time since I heard anthing worthwhile in a scale close to saraswathi. Excellent !! I would like you to send me an e-mail if possible just to establish contact.
ahaa..what a feeling it is to be with people with so much talent !
(somehow I am going blank seeing the lyrics of udhaya..I will work on my version :-) )

Thanks for listening. Actually I had Hamsanadam in mind when I composed this. You should hear N3 quite often in the arohanam which would differentiate it from Saraswathi. Saraswathi ragam is a very beautiful ragam - one of my favorites. Some lovely old telugu songs were composed in saraswathi. Ilakkam marudho is also in saraswathi, right?
I can send you an email if you can provide me your address. It would be wonderful to have contact with a singer whose voice I envy!
And I am waiting for your version and Divakar's complete version.

Hi all,
In the midst of tuning sindhippOgum mugile mugile udhaya's song, I would like to present another song. This song has an interesting anecdote. Those who have been following paadhi-raavil discussion would know that it was originally written by udhaya for rjay's sindhubhairavi tune which I retuned and what ensued was a spate of discussion and tunes which made it really enjoyable. vijay, who is a regular partner of my team, came up with a tune lilting tune in ragam gowrimanohari. I found the tune to have a lot of longing in its structure and decided it to give a new look by writing entirely fresh set of lyrics and approached udhaya. Udhaya suggested I try my hand in this and I have tried to view this song as a meera-kaNNan song (which is one of my favorite themes :-) ). I restructured the song a little bit without losing the original flavor of vijay.
It has been composed by vijay and written and rendered by me.

The lyrics go as follows:
Pallavi:
=======
vaarththai indri yEdhu kaNNa
vaazththil ingu varNanai
vaazvil inbam yedhu kaNNa
indri undhan sindhanai
kaanal neerin maayam pOla
kaaNal neeyum seygiraai
kaNNimai asaikkadhu
kaaval naanum seygirEn
Charanam 1:
===========
uyirththEril ulaviduvaai uRavE
puraviyaai enmanam pootti
maalainEra manjaL ingu mangi mangi thEyndhida
ennilaiyum pinnilaiyaai mellath thaazum
Charanam 2:
===========
kuLam neendhi malar koivEn pagalil en
kaN malar kuLamaagum iravil
vadhuvaiyin kolam pooNdu nindrum
vidhavaiyaai vaazum koLam thandhaai
Let me know your opinion.

MS,
Perfect. If the song can stands on it own without any background music, that is "as good as it gets". And this melody does. Very mature and well-rounded.

Well, we're becoming a mutual admiration society here. I'm here to perpetuate it a bit more.
Kaumudi, I've been a fan of your voice since the first time I heard it. As a non-native Thamizh singer, you're not that far off and needless to say worlds better than TFM imports from upnorth.
MS,
What an incarnation this tune and lyrics have had. Vijay's haunting tune affected us both, but I came up with an entirely different mood. I'm glad you insisted on doing it this way. Your voice suits such songs of longing, but it's the refreshingly complicated lyrics and the nuances your voice brings to unexpected places, especially Charanam 2 where you spin on the short word, "en" that lift this song to distinction.

Kaumudi,
Man! Your splitting of words is amazing. It is so easy to follow the song. Reminds me of an ARR song. With little more refinement this sure will be a hit. I love the "Mugilae Mugilae" and "inidhae Inidhae".
Pallavi is extremely catchy.

Sridhar and udhaya - thanks. In my opinion, the song has more life than I have tried to impart. I believe some better singer (like say anitha krishna) with good recording facilities would be able to do much better justice to the song. Anyway it is a song to be rendered by a lady.

Kaumidi - pretty neat composition/rendition. Hamsanadham, being a very pleasant scale, is a great choice for this song IMO.
MS had added a lot of value to the original tune with his lyrics and rendition. Great job.

MS,
If you are thinking of doing an album and you plan to sing in the album, please start working on moving away from SPB influence. I understand that it is very difficult to make the change. But it is absolutely neccessary.
Of course, this is only if you want your music to reach the mass. Lot of people produce albums just because they want to "produce albums".
There may be subtle variations that you may present which may be your own. But an average listener can not appreciate that. The listener looks for "unit of familiarity" (borrowed from Mahati). For the listener, SPB is the unit of familiarity especially when they have to pay for it. Casual listening, people dont mind even if you sing like Chenthil or Koundamani.
If something is too well known, listener loses interest.

Yeah.. that is true. Really speaking, I am more of a composer than of a singer. Only a very few songs I am thinking of singing myself. Others are to be delegated to some of my friends who happen to be singers par excellence. So I don't think much of SPB's influence would matter :-) Thanks for stating that. I do value your suggestion.
