Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

bb- thanks for this vintage gem. The female voice is TS Baghavathi.
Aalavandhan- Kannan Koyil paravai ithu is a classic VJ number from Akka. Deviyin koyin paravai ithu is a pathos filled SJ solo from Avalekkendru Or Manam. Both songs do have structural similarities.

Saravanan, thanks for the info. I am thrilled that there are indeed some other people who are aware of these rare songs.
But I don't think I have heard Deviyin koyil paravai. :(

Song of the Day: What a waiting! from ninaiththaalE inikkum.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/whataw.rm
- A short and sweet song in NinaiththaalE inikkum, the musical magnum opus by MSV.
- Sung by SPB. Lyrics by Kannadasan, I think.
- Check out the guitar work in this song. This song is often lost among the other numbers from this movie, but the guitar work alone merits this song.

Song Of The Day:
We feature two stunning pieces, by IR.
1. Trailer of Mudhal Mariyaadhai
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/muma_trailer.rm
- I caught this trailer in a DVD and recorded the music from it. This is an amazing piece. I am not sure whether this was done by IR fully, or was taken from the BGM of the movie. The work is seamless. The final rush of instruments (at 1:07) comes with Sivaji trying to lift the stone :-)
2. http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/umt.rm
This is a short bit from unnaal mudiyum thambi. The classical takes in UMT are of top class. Here, I think the situation is that of Gemini, his elder son (who plays the naadhaswaram) and Kamal reconciling after a fight. The usage of naadhaswaram and KJY's resonant voice makes this memorable.
- There is even a thread for UMT's carnatic pieces: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/4564.06.08.40.html

on: Wed Nov 20 01:43:44 EST 2002
bb,
great choice...the UMT piece is in Raga Karaharapriya...does anybody know who plays the Nadaswaram?(Thiruvizha Jayashankar???)
there is one more wonderful Nadaswaram piece in Sahana when Kamal leaves the house(that is the only Sahana by IR I have heard)
- From: bb (@ 12.234.176.52)
on: Wed Nov 20 02:32:30 EST 2002
I don't think it is Thiruvizha Jayashankar, because I remember that they advertised pudhuppatti ponnuththaayi as the first collaboration between IR and him.

on: Wed Nov 20 02:42:44 EST 2002
That is what I call a kick a$$ rendition :-) idhudhaaNda karaharapriya nu adichchu solra maadhiri irukku KJY's delivery. This is of the same class as "yochana.." from sindhu bhairavi. A voice to die for.. Some more of the KJY -IR songs which fall in this cateogory (gambeeram) are:
(1) vedham nee iniya naadham nee - in raga gowLai (or krinshanveni..debatable)
(2) gangai karai mannanadi (hanumathodi)
(3) thom thom thom ena nadamidadi (ramapriya)
(4) kalaivaaNiye (kalyani)
(5) mazaikkoru devane - amruthavarshini
Gangai amaran rightly observed once "thendralaai varudum andha mayil peeli pOndra kural (e.g. thendral vandhu ennai thodum) palsila nEram singamaai maaRi garjikkavum seyyum". This is one of those roars.
Regarding the bgm of MM:
there are many fine portions in the film which have excellent bgm. The theme flute and then the "yeh kili irukku.." song by IR are two good examples. Good work bb.

I heard the trailer of MM. But I doubt if the BGM of Sivaji lifting the stone is included in it. In the movie, it is a guitar piece (with a prominent bass guitar). Finally, when Sivaji lifts the stone, the same music is played with the sound of clapping of hands.
Probably, this is just for the trailer.

Regarding UMT, this is indeed the scene where dad and son reconcile. They are in the middle of a heated argument and I think Gemini raises his hand to hit Kamal. At that point, the mute brother starts playing his naadhaswaram. Both Gemini and Kamal join him.
IR used KJY for both Gemini and Kamal. KJY tried to modulate his voice to sound different for different actors. But voice modulation is not KJY's cup of tea, IMO.

doubter, then I guess the music for the trailer is specially composed, and not the one that came in the movie. that makes it all the more memorable.
MS, one more song to your list of gambeera KJY songs is "gangaik karai mannanadi" in thOdi (varusham 16).
