"And you guys talk about a CD at $20 some thing which is way above what the market can absorb. Even top selling album of the pop, rock variety does not cost more than $10 to 15. "
TBI is not a pop-rock album.
Don't compare apples to oranges.
Just last weekend, I bought a Ravi Shankar compilation CD for $27 and a Susheela Raman CD (Which has lyrics in Tamil, English, Sanksrit, and French) for $22. A month or so ago, I bought a Habib Koite album (with lyrics in Afrikaans and English) for $26. All at the local HMV store.
There's a huge market in the west for 'World Music'. It is also a market that is willing to shell out premium bucks for CDs. Don't underestimate it.
If a so-so Gazal singer like Kiran Aluwalia can play to packed houses all over Canada, so can Raja.

"Just last weekend, I bought a Ravi Shankar compilation CD for $27 and a Susheela Raman..."
Both are well known in the western world... but Ilayaraaja is not... He needs to be marketed...
And once he is known then only people (westeners) will start to buy a 20$ album.

"Both are well known in the western world"
True. Ravi Shankar more so than Susheela Raman.
And that marketing will begin with TBI.
I just wanted to point out the stupidity in the comments that claim TBI has Tamil lyrics so it can only be sold to Tamils.....for $10.

Susheela Raman (SR) is plain, simple IGNOMINIOUS TRASH!
believe me, I have listened to some of her works - one of them with a bizarre picture of Goddess Durga/Kaali on the CD cover - absolutely, pitiable standard of music and I cannot get any politer than this - if SR is popular in the global music circuit, only the Almighty can help us!
it is said that after the Satyug, Dwapar and Treta yugas, in the Kali yug, the very best and the very worst will happen simultaneously - IR is the example of the very best, SR is the example of the very worst happening in this Yuga

Music Lover,
I agree to your views. At the same time I am very sorry to say that all these days, IR remained a well frog, in spite of having great talents. Now he has lept out of the well. Nothing can stop him. TIS is only a beginning. Let us hope for the best.
Now, the need of the Hour is creating awareness among the public.

Music Lover,
I have both of SRs albums (Salt Rain and Love Trap), I also attended her last concert in Toronto, Canada.
I must say I love her music. I'm sure you'll agree that I am entitled to my opinion.

mnt - i am sorry if I sound impolite - for someone like me who has been pampered by IR with his musical magic, SR's music is TRASH by any yardstick - period - i am putting an end to
this for good
if SR is considered hot property abroad, then Deva, Soundaryan and SAR are geniuses beyond compare

Just to give an example of what regional/ provincial minded bias can help in marketing - please go to this website -
http://specials.rediff.com/movies/2004/dec/03sd1.htm
See the way REDIFF has covered the musical exploits of the Mallu composer Isaac Thomas Kottukapally (ITK) - i am not taking away the credit from ITK
but has any website/any online popular portal did anything along the same lines for IR, the most creative, accomplished and prolific composer this side of the Atlantic ?
why the same rediff did not say a word about IR's work in "Nizhal kutthu" which was an award-winning movie as well
perhaps, the fact that Rediff is owned and run by a Mallu has to do with the special section on ITK

ML, Prem Panicker did mention IR with praise in his nizhal kuththu review. But the portal runs on the patronage of Bollywood types so you cant expect the same level of idolisation for IR as for Anu Maliks and Shravans. Come to think of it, do you want such a site to praise IR - placing him in the same level as Mr Anu 'Thief' Malik and the likes?
I dont understand this predilection for patronage of IR from Northie types. It will not happen -a majority of them are happy with the copied movies and copied music. The ones that are original and good are kicked out of bollywood, too. Remember Vishal Bharadwaj?
IR doesnt need certificate from these types

SSSAV
Thank you for the update. But could you also tell us the response for the pre-orders so far?
In the write-up for the PRE-ORDER's one gets an idea that the pre-order response would determine how you would release and market the CD's (sony!! or otherwise)? So could you kindly give us an update of whether the pre-orders have been satisfactory.

Wait, wait!!
Dont jump into opinions too soon.
If you have read our latest update in our site, you will know that the final Master Copy has only been sent this week to IIR as he wanted some changes in the original. Give us a few more days to get this going!!
WE [all of us] are the owners of TiS and so, it will definitely be released soon!
Please be rest assured!
In the meantime, dont start anything!! :-)))

SSSSAV,
"WE [all of us] are the owners of TiS and so, it will definitely be released soon!"
Does this mean, Sony or Universal is not coming forward to market this product?
Can we have some information on Pre-Orders? Personally, i would like this album to compete for best known music awards ( some one here told, to compete for grammy, it will be easier if one of these companies market it). Which will create the awareness about IR in the World and Will help him involve in more such projects.
All with the selfish motive, sorry.
thanks

I said that [we, the owners] only to infuse confidence and not to mean any other thing!!
Every effort is being taken to make this, a phenomenal release!
And, in fact, that is one other reason for the "apparent" delay!

SSSSAV, whatever be the delay, there is a huge audience I think "prepared". Pls. listen to the above ra link for what I have meant for a long time.
Please try to release before Dec 24 as holiday sales will be the key (impulse buying moment.)
Go For It!!!!!
