Another good song to enliven the day! I used to think LR Easwari was the singer.
TR Paapa is certainly another unrecognized creative composer. I used to think of him too as a copy cat like Veda and I came to know that I was wrong through a few postings on him made earlier in this site. Isn't 'iravu varum, pagalum varum' his composition too? In this song and 'uLLathin kadhavugaL...' I have always heard an unconventional TMS.

Rejected PS? Blasphemy, blasphemy!
How then do you have the courage to suggest that he deserves more than 2 lines in this page?

Yes, sk. TRP certainly deserves more recognition.
I believe the amazing 'Arutperunjothi' is also by him, though I am not sure. Though he repeatedly came up with wonderful songs, I can't understand why he didn't get more films.
Da Vinci, yes, 'Iravu varum' is also by TRP, from Iravum Pagalum. All the songs in the film were excellent- Have you heard the bewitching TMS-PS duet- 'Kaalai neram oruthi vandhaal'? TRP made actor Asokan sing 'Irandhavana sumandhavanum irandhuttaan'--its a haunting pathos number.

Saravanan
Thanks for "Edi poongodi".
This song comes in the beginning of the film. After the titles, Dr.Koovoor talks for a few minutes. Senthamarai is the college principal. He welcomes the new lecturer Elango ( Muthuraman) and says "ippOthu Ilango avargal ezhuthiya kavithai onRai nam kallUri maaNavi Saradha paaduvaargaL. Manjula starts singing the song. After the pallavi, Muthuraman looks at Manjula and you see signs of shock and surprise in his face. (Manjula resembles his mother; we know it in the later part of the film during hypnotic treatment by Dr.Koovoor.)
Marupiravi film is available in VCD. I bought the VCD for the sole purpose of TRP songs.
TRP is one of the underrated MD's in TFM.
You are right Arutperunjothi is by TRP. It is a pleasure to hear young Janaki's voice.
iravum pagalum has one more duet "kungumak kOlam pOduvathenna kannaththilE".
I think viLakkERRiyavaL is by TRP.
muththamA kai muththamA
muththammA vENum moththamA
a nice duet by TMS-PS
and a solo by PS varisaiya mAppiLLai varuvAru seer varisaiyai pAththaathaan tharuvaaru.
maganE nee vaazga-Jay,Lakshmi starrer is by TRP
oththak kallu mookkuththi jolikkuthadi TMS-PS duet
azhagu mayil kOlamena pazhagu magaL varuga - SeerkAzhi-PS song
and there are many mora songs by TRP

Thanks Sathya :)- I can well understand that the songs drove you to buy the VCD- Marupiravi is a great effort by Papa, unfortunately forgotten today.
Yes, I remember the song sequence well- Muthuraman looking bewildered at Manjula--of course, the mystery's solution is shown in the flashback when Muthu comes out with the details of his childhood, and his love for his mother, also played by Manjula. The mother Manjula sings the caressing song 'Kaveri maanthoppu kaniyo' (Soolamanglam Rajalakshmi). Btw, the equivalent song in the Malayalam original (Punarjenmam) was sung by P.Leela ('unnikkai valara valara valara, unnikkaal valara valara valara')- an equally enthralling song by Devarajan.
Thanks for the 'Arutperunjothi' confirmation. Listening to SJ sing 'Neer undu pozhigindra kaar undu' is an emotionally moving experience.
One more song in Iravum Pagalum is 'Koothadum kondaiyile' by Seergazhi Govindarajan, PS & chorus.
Btw, even I used to think of the Vilakketriyaval song as 'muthamma kai muthamma', but on careful listening, I think it is 'Muthama aasai muthamma'
PS sings 'Muthama, aasai muthama'
TMS sings 'Aamaam, Muthamma venum moththamma'
(Vasantha's name is Muthamma in the film) Lyrics by Aalangudi Somu.
All the songs in Vilakketriyaval are appealing:
Thottil katti aaduthu pattu vanna kuruvi- PS (Kannadasan)
Thoondiyile maattikkitta- Ponnusami/PS (Aalangudi Somu)
Kaththiyai theetaadhe undhan budhdhiyai theettu- TMS (Aalangudi Somu)
varisaya maapillai varuvaaru seer varisaiyai paartha siripaaru- PS (Tiruchi Thyagarajan)
Some more examples of Papa's talent: 'Unakkum enakkum vegu dhooram illai'(Edhayum Thaangum Idhayam/ Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi), 'Isai paadum thedralodu' (Vijayapuri Veeran/AMR/Jikki),'Aadi varum aadagapporpaavaiyadi' (Thaai Magalukku Kattiya Thaali/TMS/SJ), ''Neela vanna kannane' (Mallika/PS), 'Aadavaareer' (Rambaiyin Kaathal/Bhanumathi), 'Naan vandhu serndha idam' (PL/Kumara Raja), 'Kaatril aadum mullaikkodiye' (Rangon Radha/Bhanumathi), 'Isaiyodu thendral vandhu' (Teacheramma/PS), 'Vellinila vaanathile' (Kaadhal Paduthum Paadu/ S), 'Kannan enakkoru pillai' (Yaen/Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi)--
A great composer!

Sorry it should be 'Isaiyodu deivam vandhu vilaiyaadum veedu' ( 'thendral comes in the second line: 'Ilaiyodu thendral vandhu alai modhum kaadu' :)

Saravanan,
Didn't TRP do music for the Shobana Ravi produced movie starring SVSekar? It had a sultry duet by SPB-VJ? "un kaathodu kaathoru saeidhi sonnaal enna kanmaniyae"

Satya , Saravanan
Yes T.R.Pappa was an underrated Composer and I guess he was over shadowed by others.
Sirikindral indru sirikindral by SG & PS in Nallavan Vaazhvan
Vennila Nerathile Venuganam by PS in Avasara Kalyanam
Varuven naan unadhu – what a song !! by AMR & PS in MAllika
Amma enbadhu thamizh vaarthai by PS in Teacheramma
Are songs which are still lingering in the Music Fans mind.
Thanks For making us remember this Great Composer

"Nee varuvaayaa vEl Muruga en maaLigai vaasalukkay... maadhuLam pookkaL" by SPB (very tender voice in his early stage) + SaraLa from "yEn" is also a good TRP-Product. I guess this film has one more superb SPB solo "Iraivan endroru kavignyan.. avan padaitha kavidhai manidhan" (or some other film?). "yEn" is a decent movie with AVM Rajan, Lakshmi (sister) and V.Nirmala (??).
Though TRP did not approve PS at her entry level, later she was given numerous songs, almost all were hit.
TRP+PS came out with melodious select ThirukuraL(s); they are set in a slow pace but very pleasant. Many KuraLs chosen are difficult to pronounce but PS did it extremely well. Those were broadcasted in early morning sessions of Madras A & B regularly.
In my view, the no.1 song from Teacharamma movie is "Soodi koduthavaL naan thozhi". TRP's tune and PS-in soga rasam nam manasai ennavO paNNum. Especially the charaNams with s "nilathai paartha payir vaithen? avar muhathai paartha" and 'Kadalum vaanum uLLa varai" are tear-jerking.
TRP is a great music creator indeed!

Udhaya,
That S.V.Shekar film produced by Shobana Ravi was Sparisam-1982. Music was by K.Ravi (Shobana's husband).
'Un kaathodu kaathodu seithi sonnaal' is from Nijangal- also 1982. Sung by SPB & SPS. Music by M.B.Srinivasan.
Thanks raj :) Mallika was again a great Citadel Film Corporation- TR Papa collaboration. Wonderful songs. Besides 'Varuven naan unadhu' and 'Neela vanna kannane', two other unfairly overlooked gems are 'Endhan kannil kalandhu' (AMR/PS) and 'Maanathai kaapathu ponnu' (S.C.Krishnan/Jikki)

- An extremely rare song and an absolute gem for the weekend!!
- Thanks to GV for sending me this song and other songs in the movie. This song is composed by Salil Choudhry! Sung by K.J.Yesudas. GV writes:
This was the Tamil (dubbed) version of the 1978 Malayalam movie MADHANOTSAVAM, starring Kamal and Zareena Wahaab (I think). The movie was directed by N. Sankaran Nair. I don't know how popular the movie was, but it was also dubbed into Hindi (DHIL KA SAATHI DHIL). All the 7 songs composed by Salilda were dubbed into 3 languages, with KJY being the male vocalist in all 3 languages.
The songs are:
1. kaalamagaL mEdai naadagam... KJY
2. maadapuRaavE vaa... KJY
3. thEnmalaR kannigaL... SJ (i think!!)
4. angE sengathiR saaynjaal... SJ
The original Malayalam songs can be heard at:

- Lyrics by Kannadasan.
- Other Salil Choudhry songs in SOTD:
ThingaL maalai veNkudaiyaan from Karumbu - http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/270.html
PoovaNNam pOla nenjam from azhiyaatha kOlangaL - http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/172.html
naan eNNum pozhuthu from the same movie - http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/84.html
- I will post the other songs in this movie soon.

Friends,
I vaguely remember this film as the South Indian version of 'Love Story' (Original-English), around the same time as the Hindi version with Sachin and Ranjeetha (which had the title and the soul-stirring Lata song 'ankhiyOn kE jharOke mein'). Kamal & Zarina Wahab were the Hindu-Christian couple, ZW dies of blood cancer and so on.,
