Udhya kalame - The song written by VM and sung by PS for the first time. Till that time he was longing to see his godess yes it was PS and once he saw her during this song recording he said I’ve written this song without mei ezhuthukal so that it will not affect this melody queen’s voice and PS laughed as a reaction. VM in “Indha Kulathil Kal erindhavargal”
This is such scintillating youthful song sung brilliantly by PS and a great tune by Raja

Song of the Day: yEdi poonkodi from Marupiravi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/yedi.rm
- Saravanan writes:
‘yEdi poonkodi’ from marupiravi. Sung by M.R.Vijaya. Lyrics by Kannadasan.Music by T.R.Papa.
Vijaya-Suri Combines’ Marupiravi- 1973 starred Muthuraman, Manjula (in a dual role), Asokan, M.R.R.Vasu, Nagesh, S.V.Sahasranamam, Thengai Srinivasan and Manorama. It was directed by T.R.Ramanna.
I chanced to catch this film on some TV channel a drowsy afternoon some years back, and was startled by its daring dissection of 'Oedipus Complex’, in a manner that would have done Sigmund Freud proud (discounting some compulsory concessions to commercial interests, of course!) I am still astounded that such a story, bold in its conception, and stark in its depiction, found celluloid adaptation, that too as early as in 1973! It was surely unfamiliar terrain for Ramanna, the successful maker of entertaining blockbusters, but all considering, he had done justice to the enigmatic theme.
Much later I came to know that Marupiravi was the remake of a Malayalam film Punarjenmam. Manjila Films’ Punarjenmam- 1972 starred Prem Nazeer, Jayabharathi & Adoor Bhasi. It was directed by K.S Sethumadhavan, and had some memorable songs composed by G.Devarajan.
The plot was based on a case history of Professor A.T.Kovoor, who appears in both the films and relates the story. Abraham Thomas Kovoor (1898- 1978) was an acclaimed psychiatrist, clinical hypnotist, rationalist and freethinker, who broke many a celebrated myth, and attacked established Godmen with zeal. His books like ‘Begone Godmen’ and ‘Gods, Demons and Spirits’ make engrossing reading.

MSV recently hit the headlines when the Tamizh Isai Sangam conferred the title ‘Isai Perarignar’ on him. But years ago when T.R.Papa was honored with the same title by the same august body, it went mostly unnoticed. Some men are destined to remain in the sidelines, despite their abundant achievements, and Thiruthuraipoondi Radhakrishnan Papa stands in the forefront of such forgotten masters of tfm.
Papa (real name Sivasankaran, born 1923) boasts of a pedigreed musical lineage, and started training on the violin from early childhood. In due course Papa was playing the violin in production houses like Modern Theatres and Jupiter Pictures. In the late 40s, Papa and TK Ramamoorthi were the highest paid violinists, and were always in demand.
It was Joseph Thaliyath Jr of Citadel Film Corporation, who gave Papa his first break as an independent MD, and the Malayalam film Aathmasaanthi- 1952 (also dubbed in Tamil) proved an auspicious beginning, for Papa went on to compose for many of Citadel ventures like Mallika, Vijayapuri Veeran, Vilakketriyaval, Iravum Pagalum and Kaadhal Paduthum Paadu. Papa also composed music for many Singhalese films (The timeless appeal of 'Siriyame sara', sung by the great H.R. Jothipala is a telling instance of T.R.Papa’s numerous popular hits in Singhalese)
In all, Papa composed music for only around 30 Tamil films, and though some his songs were lifts (‘Aasai pongum azhagu roopam’/ ‘Nilavo aval irulo’/ ‘Iru maanganippol idhazhoram’), he deserves commendation for some unforgettable compositions like ‘Enna enna inbame’, ‘Samarasam ulaavum idame’, ‘Sirippu- idhan sirappai seerthookki paarpathe’, ‘Thalaivaari poochootti unnai’, ‘Varuven naan unadhu’, ‘Chinnanjiru vayathu mudhal’, ‘Yaar solluvaar nilave’, ‘Sirikkindraal indru sirikkindraal’, ‘Ullam thedaathe endru solluthe’, ‘Muththaitharu paththithala’, ‘Onnume puriyale ulagathile’, ‘ullathin kadhavugal kanngalada’, ‘Muththama aasai muththama’, ‘Soodi koduthaval naan thozhi’, ‘Iarivan endroru kavignan’, ‘Vennila nerathile venugaanam’---
As a Nilaya Vidwan of AIR from 1946, Papa played the violin for many great classical vocalists. He composed music for many wonderful devotional albums; many were landmark works with Seergazhi Govindarajan. The magic of the classic ‘Chinnanjiru penn pole’ is something very special. ‘Abirami Andhaadhi’ is, of course, the glittering jewel in Papa’s crown. Papa has also served as the Principal of Madras Music College.
Ramanna and Papa were classmates in Thanjavoor, and when G.Ramanathan, Ramanna’s original choice as Arunagirinathar’s MD took ill, Papa was Ramanna’s next choice. And Papa ensured the film’s success with his scintillating score. Except for this film, in the early 60s Ramanna worked only with MSV-TKR, and after 1965 alternated between MSV and TKR. However, in the early 70s, he made some quick low budget films, for which he again picked Papa. Yaen-1970, Marupiravi-1973 and Vairam-1974 were such collaborations.

‘yEdi poonkodi’ is perhaps the most famous film song of M.R.Vijaya. Born in Calcutta and trained in classical music, MRV came under the tutelage of Kunnakkudi Vaidhiyanathan. Her first film song was ‘Madurai arasaalum Meenakshi’ in Thirumalai Thenkumari-1970. In the same film, she sang the Kannada portion ‘Krishna—daasina karayuve baa’ of the song ‘Azhage thamizhe nee vaazhga’. Kunakkudi Vaidhyanathan continued to give her opportunities like ‘Potri en vaazhmudalaagiya porule’ (Namma Veettu Deivam), ‘Kaanum kalaiyellaam kannkaatchi’ & ‘Kuravar kulam kaakkum’ (both Kannkaatchi), ‘Thalaiva thavappudhalva’ (Agathiyar), ‘Naaga deivame naangal naadum deivame’ (Annai Abirami), ‘Varuvaandi tharuvaandi’ (Deivam, where she appeared on screen, along with Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi), ‘Hello sweety hello’ (Vaazhaiyadi Vaazhai) and ‘Maadhenai padaithaan (Rajaraja Chozhan).
Despite her pleasant voice and tonal clarity, she got to sing very few songs for other MDs. Nonetheless, she showed her class in TKR’s ‘Uranga koodaathu kanne ‘ (Sakthi Leelai), KVM’s ‘Jaathigal illaiyadi papa’ (Kurathi Magan), TR Papa’s ‘Iravu muzhuthum’ (Vairam) and IR’s ‘Ananada biaravi akilaanda nayagi’ (Badrakali, a long drawn climax song wherein MRV herself appears on screen).
MRV has several devotional albums to her credit and continues to perform at temple concerts.

M.R.Vijaya walked away with the honors in Marupiravi, though the film had remarkable songs, sung by established stalwarts: The enticing ‘Sontham ini un madiyil sorgam ini un azhagil’- SPB, the soulful ‘Kannodu paarkum moham kaiyodu serththaal theerum’- PS, the dreamy ‘Oraayiram vairangal serndha azhagu’- SPB & LRE, the lilting ‘Kaveri maandhoppu kaniyo’- Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi, the haunting ‘Alaigalile thendral vandhu asaindhaadum anandam enna’- PS, the naughty ‘Raathiri nerathu ragasiyam ennadi’- LRE, S.Sarala & BSS and the boisterous ‘Veppiliayin nayagiye vinai theerkkum Bairaviye’- TMS & S.Sarala.
This song is sung by Manjula in some college function, and gets a prize from Muthuraman. I confess I had not heard any of the songs until I saw the film on TV. Perhaps these were among the many wonderful songs of the 70s that disappeared from the airwaves within a few years. And though I frequently came across people fondly remembering ‘yEdi poonkodi’, I could not find the song in any recording center. After a dogged hunt, I finally got the entire album in an unpretentious shop in Triplicane.

I was searching for this post by our Cinema Virumbi, and located it just now:
_______________
Friends,
Some trivia about 'maRupiRavi'!
Both 'maRupiRavi' and 'arangERRam' were released on the same Friday (I think!) and had an 'A' certificate screaming from posters! There ended the commonality and they were as different as chalk and cheese! For the first few weeks, both the distributors indulged in a poster war (in Dina thanthi). 'idhu kaNavan manaiviyin dhaambadhyap prachnai! kaasukkaagak kaRpai viRRavaLin kadhaiyalla!' from the 'maRupiRavi' side was countered by ' idhu oru thyaagak kaaviyam! pOliyaana kiLugiLuppoottum kadhaiyalla!' from the 'arangERRam' side. At one stage, this was going beyond limits, with both becoming losers, which made the producers and directors intervene and end the poster wrangle!!!

Saravanan:
Great song.. it comes right at the beginning of the movie, I think. Interesting movie, too.
Thanks for the write-up on TRP. He has not been given enough recognition, as you rightly point out. I am a big fan of his music. Even our newtfmpage description on him has only 2 sentences about him. The least we should do is scan the article on TRP from vAmanan's book and put it here. Though he is said to have rejected PS a chance (was it in anbu?) he gave some really great songs to her later. (Teacheramma songs, for example.)
