To quote Trend:
The depth of music and soothing effect of a music depends a lot on how much we have been exposed to a particular genre of music. If we play our native music to a foreigner his comment would be something like "music is interesting but doesn't have depth".
That's what exactly the feeling of TN natives about the RAP/ROCK stuff, it's foreign (alien?) and hence lacks depth:-))

"If we play our native music to a foreigner his comment would be something like "music is interesting but doesn't have depth"".
I am not so sure. If you give them nice melodies they will enjoy it as well. Usually, in any genre of music, a hit is a hit in all parts of the world. That way music is universal. Especially melody is universal. Rap is being 'marketed' differently. Also, the 'melody' part is something that his hampering its universal acceptance. Young people are more likely to be attracted by beats. (Note, this is the easiest part of music to grasp). Melody will take some time to be 'absorbed'. Everybody will enjoy beatsy songs but melody is what will get a music creator 'respect' and 'adoration'. This is especially true in TN/India.

Dear Friends,
"If we play our native music to a foreigner his comment would be something like "music is interesting but doesn't have depth".
Actually my experience was different. My american
friends liked few of our classical and folk film music. The appreciated our nativity music and melody. I even played few modern digital music
like.."shakalaka baby..". They told me that there is nothing new in that music ...looks like their
music. (they liked "nee partha paarvaikku nanRi"
very much).
I am not against bringing Pop, rock or even rap
music to our people. But we should not depend on
these music for ever. We should develope our own music also. At the same time we should bring lot of good music to our people. There are lots of good music in other countries. We should bring those without missing melody. Ofcourse Melody is there in Western music too.
As Bharathi said "senRiduveer ettuthikkum kalai
selvangaLai Konarnthingu Serppeer", we should bring "kalai selvangal" not "secondary stuff".
I do not blame these modern music directors
altogether. They are doing business. We should
also welcome our nativity music.

hey! yesterday i saw the movie rhythm, happened to listen the song "theem thanana theem thannana.." in that. The starting piece ie the "theemthanana" portion has a good influence of "minminiyae kanmaniyaai kondavalae yenvizhiyaall, thanthal un annai unnai o..chaa cha...", a song from some MGR movie. though i had listened this song many times here and there, only yesterday i could correlate these two songs.
is this correlation right, atleast to some extent?

Kuppuswamy :
"dheemthanana" is just a recycle of the line "naanga vambu sandaikku povathillai vantha sandaiyai viduvathillai" from the song " thirupachi aruvalai" from thaj mahal.

Th song "azagoviyam uyiraanathu" by Aadhithyan ( a lovely number from SPB) has its first two lines' sandham lifted from "madhanOthsavam rathoyoduthaan".
A better song that goes with "madhanothsavam" song is the hindhi song "maana ho thum behadh haseen" by KJY ( and Usha khanna - I guess). The hindhi song has strong shades of the tamil counterpart.

Adhityan once answered about this song in a talk show. He said he just used the same raga, he cant avoid shades of that song.

Naveen,
I'm sure the classical piece must have come after "Gopura vasalile".It would be great if you can get the name of the person who composed the classical piece. Then,we can place that person in the "copiers" list.

Time,
I sent a mail to KSUI (FM 91.7 - Classical music station) asking for the details about the piece. I'll let you know once I get a reply.
here is my mail.
Hi,
Could you please e-mail today's (Dec 14th) program guide.
I listened to a piece sometime inbetween 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM. It was very nice. I'd like to know what piece is that.

naveen, ir is not like arr, arr flicks from Dr.Alban, madonna and every other composer that ir fans knows or heard about. hence, very strong evidence is required to point fingers at "the genius", please post the reply also.

time,
I don't know why you guys have a wrong idea that IR never copies, only arr copies. IR is a good composer I accept. but try to come out of IR's circle and explore various music and their specialities.

No, ir never copies. ir rules, arr fools.
since i dont know music thoery , I cannot prove it note by note, but still like others here, I know for sure arr copies from many sources.
"ir circle" : it is better to be in the protected circle than hearing pop or mtv based junk with artificial reverbs and unnatural sound mixing tricks, I dont want to be tricked by a sound engineer.
You better post the email reply.

time,
you do not need to know music theory to find out a copied or inspired song.
so far I have'nt got any reply from KSUI
I checked this URL http://ksui.uiowa.edu/ksui-program.htm
but there are no details about the program between 8:30 and 10:00. I'll let you know if I come across the same piece anytime later.
