Janardhan;
KK had lot of variety than Rafi, agreed, so did SPB, I can not imagine KK singing any of the SPB's heart warming melodies, like "Kadhalin deepam ondru", "Dhiul deewan bin sachina ke", "tere mere beechu me", and SPB sings fast beats songs way better than Rafi & KK. :)

Sad that you count "Dhiul deewan bin sachina ke", "tere mere beechu me" heart warming melodies. They are decent songs and not very great ones. These songs are sung beautfully by even stage show performers and you say KK cannot sing them. :)) . Probably the reason why you cannot imagine KK singing them was that KK was dead by then :).
Please go and listen to songs from movies liek "amar prem", "buddha mil gaya", "kati patang" to know how beautiful KK can sing heart warming melodies. For sure SPB too has his own list of such songs. I willnot take credit away from him like you do to show the other is better.
You say about fast songs ..let me not recount the innumberable fast songs sung by Rafi just for Shammi Kapoor itself but you just listen to one album "Karz" and you will know how good KK is at fast songs.
And if you want to know about variety of KK plz listen to these fex movie soundtracks. "Aradhana", "Kora Kagaz","Amar prem" "Chalti ka naam gadi", "half ticket" and "padosan". In just these few movies he has covered most types of songs.
Just check out how better the second best singer KK is when compared to SPB. Probably then we can compare him with Rafi.

You can here those songs in musicindiaonline.com.
I am sorry if any of my statements made you feel that i donot consider SPB as one of the best singers ever to come out of indian fim music scene. I do consider him to be among the greats but not surely the greatest. SPB, Rafi, KK, KJY and many more have done full justice to the fabulous songs given to them by various MDs. I firmly believe that if so and so hasnot sung such a type of song its not due to lack of talent or ability but lack of chance and thats where luck comes into play.
The sad part is that south indians donot have much exposure to the north indian music scene nor has north indians that much exposure to north indian music. If you go and start a thread in a hindi speaking people dominated forum about SPB being the greatest singer you will find a lot of people ridiculing it and vice versa will happen if i start a Rafi thread here in tamil films domain.

dead right.
probably the tension of writing my comments before my project leader sees made me do those mistakes

I am surprised that the North Indian music directors of this generation, who do alot of experimenting with sounds, have not used SPB in their compositions.
I mean, after listening to SPBs songs for AR Or YSR I would have thought SPb would get more offers to sing in hindi now....

me to man, I always type in a hurry, hence I make many mistakes, due to fact, my project manger sits besides me :)
Jyothi;
at present there are too many girly actors in hindi, SPB's voice will never suit such girly actors, hence the hindi MD chooses their singers from a group called "Nasal gangs", Udit narayan, Kumar sanu, Sonu nigam, Sukvindher singh, hariharan are all members of this gang :)

Thanks for ur reply Raghu.
But i must disagree about girly actors, namely:
Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt. Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan. Jacki Shroff. Big B the list is endless...please comment

Raghu ..
I guess the standard of hindi songs have gone down a lot and it doesnot require singers like SPB to render a song. rarely do we find a song thats difficult to sing. Now the emphasis is that every tom di*ck(god they find it bad :))) and harry should be able to sing it so that the cheapest singer can sing it and keep the movie costs down.
Even in hindi there are few promising singer like Shaan , KK who doesnt give u a feeling like they are trying to ape someone but somehow they never get good chance whereas morons like Kumar sanu, sonu nigam and abhijeet get all the songs. If thats not enough they along with Udit and Sukhwinder are killing tamil songs too.
Ivange imse thaanga mudiyelle.
btw, was listening to "ye ye enna achu" from KV . there Vasundhara Das sings one line "gella per vechu koopida vendum" .. i was wondering was "gella per" was finally a friend told me it was "chella per" ..god!!!! saav adikkeraanga. another thing is that i wish ARR had given that song "Oh kadhale" to SPB. Mano spoiled it .

Tell me about it, Mano annoys me BIG time man, such cheap imitation of SPB, but Mano does not get any where, 4 once he should try to sing in his own voice, that KV song by mano is indeed spoilt big time, Clinton sounded better than mano in that song !
What did u think of "Yenthan vaanin kadhal nilave", SuPerB huh, In fact I am singing that song in music show in london :)

"Yenthan vaanin kadhal nilave" is realy siperb . I really wish our MDs use SPB more often. Baba was a great chance wasted by ARR.

Regarding Baba "Tippu Tippu" was finly done by Shanker, how ever Karthick's voice did not suit rajni at all, SPB should have sung both Karthick's song, I also loved that song by Srinivas & Jeyacahndran.

Raghu ..
Shanker is one of the best singers of the new generation and his voice is too good. I liked him very much in the song "Mettu parakuthu" by IR(very badly picturised on karthik and "thevaya nee??" ) and "yenna solla pogirai".
NO complaints over his rendering but over the years it has become an unwritten rule that SPB sings Rajini's intro song. What ARR did was a big break from routine. a bit too hard to digest.

100% correct, Rajni's favourite SPB always sang his intro song and a duet., in fact I could not DIGEST the fact Shanker sang the intro song rather than SPB at all :))
- From: janardhan (@ 212.217.67.10)
on: Thu Nov 7 07:48:33 EST 2002
Most if Rajini fans found it very difficult to digest. Even non Rajini fans like me found it odd. SPB always sounded great for Rajini intro song be it "athanda ithanda", "yenn peru padayappa" or "oruvan oruvan"(i especially like this .. ARR has given one hell of an introduction music sounds like some emperor is coming).
even Kamal these days is not insisting on SPB sing songs for him. Probably he wants younger "girlish voices"(pun intended) so that he feels younger.

Was watching the Hindi version of Thalapathy and eagerly waiting for "Kaatukuyilu" song(not so good dance, still a rare duet by SPB+Yesudas). I wondered how these 2 stalwarts would sing in Hindi.
Imagine my frustration and disapps when the Hindi version was sung by 2 nasal singers! 2 nasal singers for Rajini and Mammooty(Ok KJY is bit nasal but he did very well since Mammooty did his parts in a well composed and measured manner in the movie and KJY suited him, as it did in countless mallu movies)
After that I started taking Hindi remakes with a pinch of salt.
