We had a discussion on songs from Sridhar and Bhimsinghs movies.Why dont we do a similar analyis on
Balachanders films too?To ease the discussion I have given a listing of KBs films(it may not be complete,so

  KB's direction was much better than most of his contempories. I feel he could extract excellent performances from all his stars. He could at time go off tangent on and off. Thaneer Thaneer was a movie which impacted everybody. I found Duet very enjoyable, with excellent Sax from ARR.N Innikum also had excellent music. I think KB was known to be `inspired' often. Duet is probably inspired by Cyrano De..(?), a film where the hero has a large nose, this in turn inspired Rozanne (Steve Martin, Darryl Hannah), Saajan in hindi and Duet.

  U haven't touched KJY's soulful rendition of the song..
  KB is one of the greats who can claim to be one among the alltime greats of TF World.. The songs in his films always standout to be the bechmark of intelligent usage in twisty & sentimental relationships between the characters.. I would like to rate Punnagai Mannan Poovizhi kannan and Junior Junior from Avargal as the best in this category.. If he would have continued with IR it would have been better for TF world rather than any individual personalities..

  BS I dont think the standard of the songs went down even after KB stopped working with IR.
  Lates take vaanamae ellai:
  
  siragillai naan kili illai: great song with nice lyrics
  sogam ini illai: SPB excels and the music was good too
  nee aanadavana : Chitra ,SPB amd Maragathamani at their best
  nadodi mannargalae vanakkam : nice catchy tune
  janagana mana ene jadhi sollum neram: cream of the soup..best song in the album
  kammangaadu : nice tune but spoiled by Maragathamanis voice
  
  Jaadhi Malli:
  
  Solladi Bharaatha matha: vairamuthu excels,SPB and Chitra were great
  Marakka mudiyavillai; Again Vairamuthu excels
  kamban engu ponaan : Music was great so as the lyrics
  manmadha leelaiyai vendraar undo: ok song
  ranjaniye : a nice classical based song
  One more melodious ghazal by Chitra
  
  Azhagan:
  
  Thathithom: wow what a song,...great music and wonderful rendition by Chitra(she once commented that this was one of the difficult song she has sung)
  jaadhi malli poocharamae: SPBkkaagavae evvalavu vatti vena ketkalaam
  mazhaiyum neeye veyyilum neeye: an ok song
  Sangeetha swarangal: the best of the lot...so melodious,so pleasing. Very simple orchestration(only veena and violin has been used)
  kozhi koovum neramaachu and thudikkiradhae nenjam
  were not good
  
  Duet:
  
  mettu podu : great song with nice lyrics
  anjali anjali: best of ARR
  vennilaavin therileri: a fast paced sad song(rare
  types)
  en kaadhalae en kaadhalae: I have already discussed abt this song in other threads..
  kulicha kuthaalam : nice beats
  Kathirikka kathirikka: funny lyrics and cute voice(sujatha)
  duet(title song) - a nice classical based song
  
  
  Kalki:
  
  porul thedum boomiyil(2 versions)-excellent song with nice lyrics and good music
  Ezhudhugiren oru kadidham: same expln as above
  sariyaa idhu sariyaa: Chitra was excellent

  Ramki:
  I have seen only Azhagan from the list U hav given.. Out of the others
  I have seen some songs in TV.. So my knowledge is the interpretation
  based on the song visuals... All the opinions are based on situational
  importance.. I'm no way opining about the songs..
  
  Vaname Ellai:
  Sogam ini illai... Fun song by the youngsters who have some obvious
  reason to tell that sky is the limit..
  Nadodi mannargale..A countryside damsel gives a pep-song to the
  youngsters..
  
  IMO I didnt find any important matters/situations addressed in these
  songs..
  
  JathiMalli:
  Marakka mudiyavillai.. Heroine remembers the past...Good song for the situation..
  Kanban engu ponan... "Different" love song but lyrics ahead of times??? Couldnt
  find any importance
  
  
  Azhagan:
  Thathithom... Nice song providing a twist at the end with Madhu bursting out
  with "I love you".. Could not help comparing this to "Apoorva
  Ragangal" where thru "Athisaya Ragam.." the ending with "Aval
  oru Bhairavi"..(Should not do a comparison I admit but I like
  the latter song - might be that it is in Tamil!!!)
  Sangeetha swarangal: Nice melodious song for two lovers who speak throughout
  the night (DD goes off in the night & again starts at morn')
  Definitely a good situational melody..
  Rest : IMO,No situational importance
  
  Duet:
  En Kaadhale..en kadhale: Good song.. Hero tormented with love.. Nicely tuned by ARR
  Vennilavin theril.. : The best listed.. The interlude music which has Meenakshi
  dancing as though thru Prabhu's mind was very good..
  
  Kalki:
  Ezhuthugiren oru kaditham : Thoughts that go thru the distressed mind of
  Geetha..(Good one..but not a lingering tune)
  
  
  All in all the songs definitely doesn't have the punch of his earlier movies..
  I definitely admit that KB has gone down a few rungs in his quality
  too in the storylines of these films..Except Kalki all other films had
  usual storylines (people expect that "something different" from KB)
  .. I cant opine much on Kalki music as I haven't heard that much.. Even
  though the film was a hit the popularity of the songs cant be considered
  that much..
  
  As far as music is concerned Azhagan/Duet/VanameEllai are definitely
  good in any standards.. Also we never can surmise that all the songs
  in previous films went hand-in-hand with the situations.. But definitely
  there was atleast one song which would be the best for the important
  situation of the film..

  If u want to talk on KBs films i will say that the standard of his film started declining after 'kalyaana agadhigal'
  To my opinion 'punnagai mannan 'was very mediocre
  and second half of 'unnal mudiyum thambi'was like a documentary piece
  
  I didnt like 'sindhu bhairavi'for several reasons.
  'manadhil urudhi vendum'was good but looked like a continuation of 'aval oru thodarkadhai'
  
  'oru veedu iru vaasal'wasexcellent but unfortunately it couldnt click with the masses
  
  'pudhu pudhu arthangal'was an ok film .The characterisations were very good but the story
  was not interesting
  
  Vaanamae ellai,jaadhi malli ,azhagan and duet
  were 'so-so'films
  
  Kalki was good .I was able to see the 70s kB in this film.Sruthi deserved a national award for her excellent performance.
