bb,
my embarassment reduced a bit today. even your PC misbehaves or is it the net. I shudder whenever I see multiple posts of mine. so it happens to the best of us.
coming to the song in q, TMS had a razor sharp voice those days and even the layman could catch the content of the lyrics. Result MGR rode happily to Fort st George , mixed blessings ;-) or :-(

An immortal classic that would easily find a place of pride in any compilation of MGR hits.
arasiLankumari (Jupiter Pictures/ 1961) was a few years in the making, held up perhaps with MGR's preoccupation with naadOdi mannan. 'Jupiter' Somu passed away even before the film was completed, and MGR is said to taken upon himself the responsibility of completing the filming and arranging for its release. Besides MGR, the film starred Muthuraman, Padmini, Rajasulochana, Nambiar and others.
GR was gradually adopting a lighter style to suit the changing trends, and the folkish songs of arasiLankumari stand testimony to his infinite imagination.
'thillalangadi thillalangadi therinjikka vEnum'(Kannadasan)is a catchy PS folk song, while 'aththaanE aasai aththaanE anbE unnai nannaaLile kaNdEnE'(KSG) has PL giving a delightfully breezy essay. 'yEtRamunna yEtRam – idhilE irukkuthu munnEtRam'(PKS) filmed on MGR and Muthuraman, is a great folk song with some hometruths sprinkled in liberal measure, sung gustily by TMS and Seergazhi G. Seergazhi G had another great number, with PKS at his hard-hitting best- 'ettu jaan kuchchukkuLLE kandhaiya ethanai naaL iruppEn'. Having restrained his classical leanings so long, GR lets them flow in the last number- the amazing fast-paced dance song sung with aplomb by SJ (her first song for GR): 'thaara avar varuvaara- kaNgaL thavippathaithaan aRivaara'(Ku.Ma.Ba) with the brigha-filled refrain 'ninaithaalE inbam meerudhadi' being the fantastic highpoint.

NagaS, the record of echil iravugaL credits Vairamuthu as the lyricist of 'yEzhai viLakku'.
However, if A.S.Prakasam had said that it was penned by IR, it must be so! Btw, I remember that IR wrote songs in Prakasam's aaLapiRandhavan(1987) too.

Song of the Day: thendRal thaalaattum nEram from vasantham varum.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thendralvk.rm
- Saravanan writes:
‘thendRal thaalaattum nEram’ from vasantham varum. Sung by K.J.Yesudas & P.Suseela. Lyrics by Mu. Pavanan. Music by V.Kumar.
* * * *
"Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a
stone
Tell where I lie".
- Alexander Pope
Today happens to be V.Kumar’s birthday. And had he lived, he would have turned 70 today. The songs he crafted for us are still with us though, serving as constant reminders of their gentle, unassuming creator.
* * * *
vasantham varum, despite its optimistic title, found that spring had callously passed it by, for it never got to be released. And the wonderful album that Kumar eagerly worked on was consigned to lie forgotten on the dusty rear shelves of the few audio centers that happened to buy the record.
The record gives the year of its manufacture as 1981, and announces the wretched banner as ‘Electra Films’. Vijayan is shown in a ruminative posture on the front sleeve, while Saratbabu smiles at you from the other side. The director of this doomed film was K.Somasundareswar. All the four songs were written by the obscure Pavanan.
‘thendRal thaalaatum nEram’ is an exquisite guitar-driven composition, one that throws open wondrous vistas of dreamy, languorous romance. KJY and PS merge into the captivating canvas, bringing to passionate portrayal the aching longings of a love-struck couple. The other songs were no less appealing: the fun-filled SPB ditty ‘sonnaal kEtkiREn munaal paarkiREn’, KJY at his ruminative best in ‘kaNNil oNdRu, kaiyil vERu, yEzhai nenjil vasanthamE vaa’, where Kumar’s well-etched piano-dominated interludes simply dazzle, and KJY’s haunting ‘vaanilE alaindhadhE en kaalgaL, naanum Or dhEvanaanEn’ with the violin mesmerizing as the melancholic mainstay--- how bitterly disappointed Kumar would have been at the fate of the film, and its album!
But then, such frustrations were not new to Kumar. So many of his painstaking endeavors were wasted on such stillborn ventures. Numerous were such flowers that were born to blush unseen. Only fervent listeners of Radio Ceylon were fortunate to have listened to such wonderful creations of Kumar like ‘naanO un adimai, ennakOr thanipperumai’ (PS/JC), ‘nilaavai netRu paarthathu’ (VJ)- both from an unreleased unnai naan sandhithEn, ‘ulagam siRidhu naan unnai eNNumpOthu’ (TMS/PS) from pErap piLLai, TMS and VJ weaving magic in ‘oru paarvai nooRu kavidhai’ from manOranjitham, SJ’s haunting title track from the same film; SPB and SJ crooning ‘rasigan thaan enakku nee’ from an unreleased late 70s venture called rasigan…I have not been able to get much information on these unreleased films. avaL oru kaaviyam (earlier titled thyaaga uLLam, stg: Jaiganesh, Sumitra) was slightly luckier, after years of hibernation in the cans, it was released in a few B & C centers in 1983. Thanks to the myriad TV channels that occasionally telecast this film in their weekday noon slots, Kumar’s enchanting songs like ‘krishNaprabhu unnidam kudi koNdEn’ (PS) and ‘kOdi inbangaL thEdum uLLangaL’ (JC/PS) enjoy an extended lease of life.
But why to talk about Kumar’s efforts wasted on unreleased films---he often suffers the misfortune of even many of his brilliant compositions being repeatedly credited to other MDs. A seasoned audio center owner was firm in his belief that ‘thirukkOyil thEdi rathi dEvi vandhaaL’ was by MSV; a journalist friend was skeptical when I insisted that ‘enna thavam siedhEn unnai maNam koLLa’ was by Kumar, and a classmate refuses to accept that ‘nellum neerum onRai onRu’ was not by IR!
Let us attempt to set the record straight, and give the self-effacing mellisai maamaNi his true due. We owe that much to him.

Saravanan,
I am not sure ... may be IR only wrote that first line 'yezhai viLakku, athu theruvil vanthathadi' - A S Pragasam was praising that puthumaiyaana sinthanai to call nila as 'yezhai viLakku'

I don't know the MDs of many of the songs in my collection.
Guess what I do? put it under IR!
I'm sure there are people like me who "assume."
Does the TF industry have an official database(record book, actually) on movie details?(even unreleased ones)
It would be nice to have something like 'freedb'

Saravanan,
Nice song.. One I am listening to for the first time. Could you upload the rest of these unknown (to me at least) songs in your Malarum Ninaivugal series? It will be great if you could do that.
