Can we make it Lord of the Kellys!Return of the King!
An superb example to establish Sridhar's musical tastes. What a combination.Even a classical musician like Kunnakudi took a leaf out of this song.....just listen to the first interlude and listen to Marudamalai mamaniye's first interlude.MSV himself tried to repeat the same magic in the interlude of Malare Kurinji malare. The feeling of lovers showing remarkable restraint ,dignity and composure has been brought well by PBS and SJ.
PM was another classic from Sridhar-MSV-TKR

How about the film itself? I remember watching it a few years ago, and couldn't stand it. I thought at that time that it was possibly Sridhar's worst effort (his later films with karthik/mohan not included).

bb, I remember watching it as a kid - it was the time when Madras DD had begun its sevai. We hadn't yet got a TV- pakkathu veetla Televista-nu oru TV vaangnaanga- went there and saw this film!
Came home during 'Seithikku pin thiraippadam thodarum' for dinner, and wasn't allowed to go back to watch the rest :(
The film was a tear-jerker,I vaguely remember Vijayakumari & Muthuraman being Sahasranam's children. Vijayakumari is seduced by Balaji, who ditches her--usual stuff.
But Sahasranamam's didgnified performance was ouststanding.

bb: I saw the movie when it was released. It was a hit. Tear jerkers were the order of the day in early 60s!

PBS is an acquired taste for me (but he's in rare form here actually accentuating the lyrics) and SJ, well, this earth will acquire me before I succumb to her singing, but "pon enbaen" is one of my most favorite TFM songs. The lyrics and the composition are exquisite. The tempo is defiant and should be studied in a class just to understand the variations, the range possible in a single song.
It takes a great song to bring out some great posts too. I've enjoyed all the posts related to this song and learned much more about the song. Tamburavai ninaithu indha paadal, innum ovvoru vaaththiyaththukkum oru paattu poattirukkaaraa MSV?

Udhaya, as is your wont, you have come up with yet another poetry of sorts crammed in within a 'Response' box to be unfortunately labelled as a 'Posting'. Great observation guys.
Reminded me of a famous passage in a book 'The true "creator" does not create but discovers what is already created'. A tanpoora inspired song indeed !!!! Yet how many would have been able to 'tap' the latent tune within the strains of a tanpoora !!! Wah !!! Wah !!!

Do we have to compare "Pothuvaga en manasu" to "oruvan oruvan muthalali"? Now I will say that the latter beats the former hands down. And then we will have flame war out here. Every two bit nickname will be brandished and then the IR fans and the ARR fans will make this forum a kuttai of the worst sort. And then somebody will say Kumudam conducted a poll finding vendakka is the best. Another will say that in London they want only sundakka and so on. I like Oruvan Oruvan... immensely because the lyrics are more profound not in a superior way but more fitting the kind of person Rajini had become by then and the role he was playing in Muthu. My colleague in those days a pretty hard core DMK type and Tamizh arignar of sorts was all praise for the song and would keep humming the lines, "maNNin meedhu manidanukkasai....manidhan meedhu...." after he had spent a fortune on his father's treatment. He would say, "of what use is my money if my father is not there?" The Muthu number is one in which the voice -SPB's- and the music take turns dominating the bars and what a perfect match! And do I like Murattu KaaLai any less -- c'mon!

Song of the Day: adi peNNE from muLLum malarum.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/adipenne.rm
- muLLum malarum was a Mahendran masterpiece, starring Rajinikanth, Shoba and Sarathbabu. Everytime I see the film, I find something new to appreciate Mahendran in this movie. Recently, Rajinikanth himself said that his best film was this one, since he did a role that he wouldn't have even dreamt of.
Ilayaraja had been in the field for only a couple of years when this film came out. The film gave IR an ample opportunity to show his wares and he took it up and came out with great songs that have stood the test of time. The songs in muLLum malarum were "niththam niththam nelluch chOru", "senthaazham poovil" and "raaman aaNdaalum".
The song is a rich treasure. IR has used jaladharangam (or is it Xylophone) in the prelude and postlude. The pallavi, following a brisk prelude, is like a hop, skip and jump, sending us soaring in the sky. The second prelude is also an interesting tangential variation from the song. One of the best songs by Jency.

Film had Fadafat too ..
Senthazhampoovil was a class ..
SOTD was picturised beautifully(camera by Balumahendra)

Isn't this the only film that BM worked with Mahendran? I read somewhere that there was a problem between Mahendran and Balu Mahendra in the sets, and Kamal was involved somehow to resolve it.

Yes, bb, -one of Jency's best songs, and in her very first year in tfm. The remarkable number of hit songs that came her way in the few years that she sang in tfm (1978- 1982) is something amazing!
The soaring joyous feelings of an innocent village girl in love get translated into spellbinding music by IR--the interludes are unforgettable. It was with this song that Mahendran started his famous trend of the actors not mouthing the lines, and just being natural, while the song is heard. (Till then perhaps only 'manasaatchi'/ sad songs were shot this way) Balumahendra (incidentally the cameraman of MM) also followed this style in many of his songs.
There is one more song- 'maan iname chinna poo vaname' sung by IR.

In a film which had KJY masterpiece " senthazham poovil" , the best ( second best?) song on food " Nitham nitham nellu soru" the best rural /tribal? dance "Raman aandalum" the song in Q will finish a distant fourth- in racing parlance an also ran. May be it is one of Jency's better efforts. But " vaanathil oru megham" her nasal twang tamil has only been bettered by Udit's rendition of tamil!
Senthazham poovil I think has been featured as SOTD earlier isn't it?
Ilayaraja's music those days rang true and uncluttered. was it because Kaviyarasar was still around?

Saravanan, not that. There was an incident in the sets of Mullum Malarum, between BM and Mahendran, that Kamal helped solve. I don't recall the details, however.

Friends,
I found one small flaw in the lyrics of 'Senthaazhampoovil----'
One stanza goes like tis:
1.Azhagu miguntha raajakumaari mEgamaagap pOgiRaaL.
2. Jarigai neLiyum sElai koNdu malaiyai moodap paarkkiRaaL.
3. PaLLam silar uLLam ena En padaiththaan aaNdavan?
4. Pattam tharath thEduginREn engE andha naayagan?
Points 1 & 2 are good creations of God ,rightly worth appreciation by the singer. But point 3 is a negative creation of God which obviously doesn't deserve any citation. Point 4 gives you a feeling that God is being praised for His bad creation viz., point 3 (either on its own or along with His good creations 1 & 2)!
