Great Choice. But I still feel Manmadha leelayai vendraar undo is one of the all time great romantic songs in TFM

What a remorse-filled poignant paean from a son to his parents! An emotive song, quite at the other end of the spectrum of the ‘manmatha leelai’ obsessed Haridas! ‘Annaiyum thandhaiyum thane paaril andasaraasaram kankanda deivam’ is another touching song in the same genre from Haridas.
Based on a Marathi devotional tale, Royal Talkie Distributors’ Haridas – 1944 (directed by Sundarrao Natkarni) was filled with many wonderful songs by MKT, T.R. Rajakumari & N.C.Vasanthakokilam. Haridas (MKT), his wife (NCV) and the courtesan Ramba (TRR) are all human beings with more than a normal share of faults and vices--However life, as is its wont, presently makes them repent for the wickedness of their ways, and goodness triumphs as usual.
If MKT repents with the SOTD, NCV does it with 'Enathu uyir naathan’ and TRR in her turn shows her remorse in ‘Kaathagi kiraathagi naan’.
Thanks bb, for this classic.

'Hindu Nesan', hmm !!!!! If some of the songs as this one featured today are a treat to listen, it is still more a pleasure to be kindled with some of the memories associated with them. I still remember this almost 'yellow' journal, though I do not belong to MKT's generation :).
By the bye, Could Manisekaran or Saravanan or anyone well-versed with Tamil movie industry have anything to say how the movie 'Chintamani' and the 'Chintamani Talkies' in Madurai are related to each other? I am curious about it since it belongs to my maternal uncle and I have heard interesting stories about it, most of which I can only vaguely remember.
PS: Last month, I found an LP record of MKT's collections at the archives or WRPI. MKT's picture was on the cover, and he was certainly dashing. Was he a North Indian ? He had much of Northie features, I believe.

Da Vinci,
Thiagarajan is a name specific to thamizh especially those who hail from(has roots in) chOLanaadu. As surya said MKT is from Tiruchi (i think a village near tiruchi). His samaadhi is still there in that place.
I once thought that, this theatre was built by the "shaanthasakkubai" famous actress chinthaamaNi but what I heard is ChinthaamaNi talkies was built from the profit due to the victory of the movie chinthaamaNi.

Sri M.K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar's birthplace was Mayavaram. He was born on 1.3.1910. His father, Krishnamurthy, goldsmith by profession was not well off when MKT was born. MKT's mother Manikkathammal hailed from Tanjore. .....

makkaL i beg your pardon for calling chozhanaadu to chOLanaadu.
it is "slop of the tingue".
Vaasan long back i read in a thamizh magazine (vikatan?) that MKT was buried in a place near the house he used to live (a place near tiruchi). Might be I mistook it to his birth place. Thanks for the correction.

Song of the Day: pon enbEn from policekaran magaL.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ponenben.rm
- Sung by PBS and SJ. Music by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy. Lyrics by Kannadasan.
- It is tough to choose a song from this movie, since all songs are famous and have stood the test of time. This one is a slow number that has a lot of difficult sangathis to sing.
- In the recent release of MSV's biography, it seems PBS sang this song as a tribute to MSV.
- Other songs in this Sridhar films are "aaNdonRu pOnaal", "indha mandraththil Odi varum", "nilavukku en mEl ennadi kObam", "kaNNilE neer edharkku" and "poranthaalum aambaLaiyaa".

Great choice for the weekend, bb! But the link is for yesterday's SOTD?
When SL and I had a chat with PBS, this song was discussed. PBS had some very high words of praise for SJ. He said ' Andha Ammavukku 2+2 enna-nu theriyaathu, aana paattule kalakkiduvaanga! Evalao kashthamaana sangatheenaalum anayaasaama paadiduvaanaga-- in spite of not learning classical music! Each song with her was a challenge.'
Sri Ganesh Picture Circuit's Policekaran Magal- 1962 starred Sahasranamam, Muthuraman, Balaji, Vijayakumari, Pushpalata, Chandrababu, Manorama & others.
Sridhar's other film in 1962- Sumaithaangi, also had some wonderful songs by PBS & SJ.

bb,
You have made immediate amends :-) Both ennudan & today's song are gems kaalathai kadanthavai!
What does one say about PBS. Sheer joy, ecstasy, pure magic, bliss.words fail me. just close your eyes and let PBS-SJ, Visu-Ramu take over!
The songs from this film & Sumaithangi seem to have been composed in anticipation of yours truly into this great world early 1963;-))
Policekaran magal was based on a drama written by well known writer- P S Ramayyah.

pAttenbEn ithai thAn pAttenbEn...................
Sridhar who had directed 'dil Ek mandir' pointed MSV to a sitar piece in the song 'ruk jA rAth' sung by Lata and requested that a song be made based on the sitar phrasing. The first part of the first line of 'ponnenbEn....' is derived from the sitar piece, but hold it....not lifted. The tune was composed first and Kannadasan was requested to squeeze in the words and much to the great poet's chagrin. KD was reported to have been vexed with having to pen lyrics for duets day in and day out and is reported to have stated 'athAn, kAnnA, mayiruu, mattai ellAm ezhuthiyAchE'. Sridhar is said to have gently coazed him into writing the lyrics for the pre-set tune and lo .....the words it seems came out in a flurry. One of SPB's all time favourite duets.

nAn yAr,
Was it based on sitar piece?
I remember, in a rare paatukku paattu kind of event between a set of new singers (pop singers like shalini etc) with old timers (PBS, Jamuna Rani, Jikki etc) conducted by Madras Doordarshan, PBS told this song's tune is set (inspired from) based on "tampooraa sruthi meettal" a unique idea came from MSV-TKR. He even said that the "haa(n) haa(n) haa(n)" humming of the song exposes this idea to the listeners.
Man what an inspiration, a splendid evergreen tune based on tampooraa's sruthi.
Fortunately we don't have to say "adhu oru azhagiya nilaakkaalam" because of the immortality of such songs.
Five days for next week five more songs..nay..gems from this movie left. bb would be very glad if u make the next week as "poleeeskaaran magaL VAAAARRAAAAMMMMMM".
