Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Susi,
I wonder if even VJ remembers the songs that she has sung. You come up with such rare ones!

I read that review about 28,000 songs...and I somehow dont think its right...if you read different sources of information about all these singers (not just VJ), you find different numbers being quoted. 16,000 28,000 35,000 50,000 and so on...I wonder how all these numbers all end in 3 zeroes invariably :-)
Mohammed Rafi for instance (whose singing period is much longer than VJs so far) claimed to have sung 30,000 songs...however when the Enyclopedia of Hindi Cinema was consulted, or the Geet Kosh (by Harminder Singh...)....the figure has purportedly come to just about 3500. Rafis repertoire in almost all regional languages has been extremely tiny....all those songs put together might not make more than 2000...so not more than 6000 songs...
Even Asha whose singing career started in 1949 and was in its peak atleast till 1992...has recorded not more than 11,500 songs ...and considering that she has a large (and consistent)repertoire in Marathi,Gujrathi,Bengali,Punjabi,Marwari and Bhojpuri. Indeed she is considered one of the TOPMOST (commercially and qualitatively) singers ever in all these languages...
Considering that VJs peak in the film industry was from the mid 70s to mid 80s (much shorter than 45 years), it is definitely unlikely that she could have sung 28,0000....i guess the number would be around 7000....BTW I shall produce a link to an article on her where the figure they have quoted is something less than 7000...let me hunt it up. My point is...these figures are to be taken with truckloads of salt until all the songs sung by these singers are counted, film per film song per song...and indeed when it has been done (by dedicated and knowledgeable admirers of these artists), the figure has always been much, much less.
But a point to be noted is...music isnt something like cricket. In cricket, the number of runs/wickets/catches taken is important....in singing its the quality and melody. And VJs repertoire is immeasurable in terms of quality. No figure of even 1 lakh can match up to that fantabulous QUALITY. (Example - C V Raman hasnt published thousands of research papers)Quantity of output is important only as long as you establish yourself as a singer..thereafter even a few songs are sufficient for connoisseurs.

That is very true, AVR. Numbers are numbers - and the sources contradict each other. Quality is infinitely preferable to Quantity. And VJ does have more of the former in her bag. I gave the number (as large and unreal as it seems) just to indicate that how can an artiste remember each and ever song they have sung...even if the real number were 7000 or 8000 - memory might not be much help with these figures either! :-)

The numbers might include the non-film songs too.Vani s devotional numbers are too many and in many languages.

on: Tue Mar 26 11:48:32 EST 2002
Yes, OISG , VJ has many non-film albums in numerous languages. However, 28000 does seem a tad inflated...though it is the right statistic - then, hey, more power to VJ is all I can say!! :-)

"though, IF it is..." that sentence should read!

Naaz...and in any case even if VJ or any other veteran artist really has recorded 50,000 songs say. Now it is obviously impossible for us to listen to even 5000 songs of one and the same artist in our whole lifetime...and here again the point is not how MANY songs you listen, but also how carefully you listen and how you appreciate the nuances in them. In case of Vani and Lata also, I often rewind the tape/audio clip back to one particular word again and again because i like the way that WORD has been sung...for instance.
Going by this manner, even if manage to listen to say 500-600 songs WELL, it would give me infinte joy.

Sorry for the digression...
Avr, (I could not resist saying this even though this doesn't belong here) now that you mentioned listening to a particular word rewinding your tape again and again, I was instantly reminded by 2 songs of PS:
1. Ethiga Poonganu - Maro Charithra - the line "artham kaalEdhaa, mmm?" - that "mmm" - I just don't find words to express it!
2. Kettele Ange - BadrakaaLi - the line "mookirukku muzhiyirukku azhagillaiyO nEkku" - that "nEkku" - what a subtle shy expression!
BTW, how are you and Naaz doing? Long time I came here! I recently heard Vani-MSV's "Vinnil Thondrum Thaaragai Ellaam" - Punidha Anthoniyaar - what a tempo in that song!

Thanks for asking, K. I am doing well. Where have you been lately??
Words and mining their nuaces:
VJ's slightly tipsy "bodhai" in "parthaalum bodhai tharum...." from "Yarathu" in Nenjamellam Neeye.
VJ's seductive anxiety in "Mudhugai Suduthey Moochchu..." from the song "Karisal Tharisu" in Achchamillai, Achchamillai...ending with that teasing "Podhum Sami Podhum...." Yekachekka Yamma!! :-)

Naaz: So, you didn't get the new tiruppaavai album?
- From: Naaz (@ 24.76.127.63)
on: Wed Mar 27 00:48:53 EST 2002
kik - that album had not been released (only recorded) hence it didn't make it here this time. But it will down the road at some point, I am sure.
I have been listening to VJs songs from Ye Sawan Kyon Barse, as one so rarely hears her sing in hindi these days. Live concerts excepted. I have not yet had time to sample the other six. The Sawan album is out of this world. I think VJs voice has remained the same from her Bol Re Papi Hara days in its felicity, but what has changed over the decades is her effortless voice control. Some pitches she hits in the these songs are up there, with Barbra Streisand, tremorless.
I will write more, including more about the tamizh albums, now and again.

Have anyone here met Vani personally? How is she? Is she soft spoken, humble and with top notch persoanlity as she seem to be?

I have met VJ personally, susi. She is a genuinely kind, articulate, confident, curious and sincere person. Her belief in her abilities as a singer is undeniable. She comes across (in flawless English and Hindi and Tamizh )as a person who values dignity, respect and excellence. She is a woman of SUBSTANCE.

Priya - I wish I did. I have a cutting of my article somewhere in a scrapbook in the attic! Those were the pre-www days...Our links to the world then were the everyday newspapers!
I also did an interview with Shobana (Idhu Namma Aalu) for Filmfare Magazine and an interview with Archana (when she won the best actress award twice in a row for Veedu and Daasi) for The Hindu. But I don't believe these have been archived as LINKS. :-((

Please - all VJ adimrers - whether you understand Hindi or not - try and get a copy of VJs latest Ye Sawan Kyon Barse...It will keep you divine company for many many years to come. The album is really something else.
It was released in 2000 by Bharat Companies (the inlay card does not have their address so I am unable to give you their address) - but they should have a link somewhere if you do a Google search.
