"BD might become a big hit": NYTIMES
ON STAGE AND OFF
Trans-Atlantic Back and Forth
By JESSE MCKINLEY
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/06/07/arts/theater/07BROA.html
With the closings of "Cats" in London last month and "Starlight
Express" several months earlier, it might have seemed that the era of
Andrew Lloyd Webber's West End dominance was over.
But since Lord Lloyd Webber's newest production began previews at the
Apollo Victoria Theater in London last Friday, producers there and in
New York are talking about it as another potentially big hit.
The show is the Bollywood-inspired "Bombay Dreams," which is to open
on June 19 but is already generating enough buzz during its first
week to convince the Shuberts and the Nederlanders that they were
wise to invest in the production. Both companies are sending high-
level executives to the opening.
"Bombay" is a significant departure for Lord Lloyd Webber. He
composed the epic musicals "Phantom of the Opera" and "Cats," but for
this show he is solely a producer. "Bombay Dreams," written by the
Indian musician A. R. Rahman, is about a beautiful rich girl who
falls in love with a boy from the wrong side of the slum.
"At this moment, there's a great need for something different on
Broadway," said Phil Smith, president of the Shubert
Organization. "And this may fit the bill."
It may not be the only major import: the Shuberts and Nederlanders
are also both expected to be checking out "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,"
the boffo hit at the London Palladium. Frederick Zollo, its lead
producer, said it would come to the United States but did not know
when.
A confirmed arrival from London is "The Distance From Here," the
newest play by Neil LaBute ("The Shape of Things"). It is another
tale of suburban woe, this time involving hints of incest and a
climactic scene at a zoo. The play recently opened at the Almeida
Theater in London. Stateside, it is to appear Off Broadway as part of
the MCC Theater's season.

interesting reading. unfortunately, indian films cannot be well appreciated because of the squirmy melodrama and unnerving portrayals and "polysaturated" acting in hindi film world is what has encouraged all indian films generic as bollywood. (recently, i saw this asoka of shahrukh khan and sivan. makes me wonder to what extent these fellas work hard to embarrass themselves - like asking steven spielberg to view the film and give comments.)
people abroad should be made aware of the music and talents of south Indian films and help them understand that faces of dev anand or dilip kumar is not sufficient to make highly creative and balanced movies!

Nearly 50% of the Bombay Dreams Album is Reused or Remixed tunes.
Is for this REMIX WORK did ARR spent nearly 2 years in London delaying and dropping INDIAN projects?
It was because of BD ARR lost his No:1 spot in south and if Lagaan & TLOBS was not there for him in Hindi, ARR would have totally disappeared from INDIAN FILM MUSIC.
The HYPE for BD was too much and that itself will lead to the down fall ARR among Indian fans.
I am proud that ARR( a man from Chennai) is doing international projects. But the output from his BD is not worth at the cost of rejecting Indian projects.
I feel ARR will not repeat this kind of work in his future international projects.

Yeah the making of BD is to be screened on Tuesday this week, as far as I know, the response to BD has just been lukewarm. The recession in London hasn't helped, and also te world cup is attracting all the attention. Maybe it will pick up in some time!

British critics gave theater impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest musical adventure, an extravagant version of Bollywood love story "Bombay Dreams," a qualified thumbs up on Thursday after its London premier.
Hinting at possible blockbuster status around the corner, the Daily Express described the lavish show, which received a standing ovation from a star-studded audience, as the "best film-world musical since Sunset Boulevard."

Although his last lines "When 'India' does not mean songs and sequins, but terror and panic, one needs more than this shoddy glamour to forget reality." smack of typical pommy arrogance (stupidity?)

When "India'' does not mean songs and sequins, but terror and panic, one needs more than this shoddy glamour to forget reality.
-- that is not true , hope we all agree. imo a biassed "political" opinion on India. this is nothing got to do with music.
The romantic numbers are familiar too, with the instant-wistful sound we know from many, many sappy musicals.
-- these lines makes me feel Rhoda Koenig is basically a hater of Musicals

he starts of with a wrong note!...
A £4m budget, a large cast, a story about "the mad Indian movie-making industry" ...
this guy or gal is pathetic. many would discount the review right away.

I read about 5 reviews plus some itv stuff and a bbc world news last night. not any special mention made about rahman's music! all they said was about the costumes and the storyline. musicals is really not about storyline it is about the songs and the stage sets! they also talked about some musical actress being there for the premiere.

most of the reviws have just echoed what I said earlier.I feel vindicated now. This show is not for the British audience at all.some one called poramai said I am jealous and to discount 90 pcof what I had written.I hope he has read all those reviews. This is probably the costliest entertainment for a south asian audience-to what end?To portray a story set in style of seventies?
ALW is powerful-powerful enuf to have to have a 0ne hour show in BBC dedicated to a show whose outcome was no one sure of-In india this can happen only in sun tv or some other private channels-bbc?for god's sake.
This IS a racist society-ask your freinds who are in UK-they will tell you .At the best ,BD will be received with amused tolerance. These people's tastes and BD form of music is like chalk and cheese.
Daily mail calls ARR asian mozart-could that be because that is what the press handout says? We,who have been listening to his music for the past 10 years, never called him that.mozart must be really turning over in his grave!
o(p)inion, you have not seen the show-go back and read what I have written-I have said exactly the same thing.or do you think that these people are also jealous? It does not admittedly help being a widely disliked figure like ALW.may be I should start writing reveiws!
Bd fails in that -it takes the audience for granted, underestimates the intelligence of the audience and overhyped its composer.
I admit-he has made a good job of adapting to the stage format and the nos are catchy. But,to an audience homegrown on madonna, robbie williams ,eminem this will be a passing fancy before the next latin number comes.

'Bombay Dreams' opens on a disappointing note
By Hasan Suroor
LONDON JUNE 20. After months of hype, Andrew Lloyd Webber and A.R.Rahman's raunchy musical Bombay Dreams opened at the London's West End on Wednesday evening to uniformly indifferent first reviews raising doubts whether Bollywood will ever be accepted seriously by a critical western audience.
