>> 'Idho our nila kalam' for the Movie Tic Tic.
this sounds familiar ;) It is one of my favorites as well.
The chords go like this:
Pallavi:
Idhu oru .... |Dm|. .A-5 (7)| x2
paarijatham...|Dm|%|FM7|%| x2
Ilamaye.... |Dm|%|B half-dim7|
Paravaye... |BbM7|Dm|E|A|
Charanam:
(dont remember lyrics)
|F|%|%|%|
pazhagi paarth.. |Bb|. C#dim|C7|F|
Vandu vandhu.... |F|Am|E7|%| x2
Paruva poo .... |Am|E7|A|A7|
The beauty of the song is of course the interludes.
BTW, don't get bogged down by the added notes. Instead see them as "substitutions" of roots - except the diminished of course. Diminished chords are incomplete, and they have to land somewhere (that is called resolution).
So for the above song, replace letters with roman numerals, you see something like:
i - V (-5)
i - III (M7)
i - VI 1/2 dim 7th etc...
1/2 dim 7th: These chords are minor 7th with their 3rd note flatted. They are mostly treated like minor 7ths. What you saw above is the dimished 7th's first note moving one semitone below to a major seventh. In IR's songs this is very common.
Also you notice the end of charanam and pallavi ending in V (chord A) so when you return, you go back to I. This movement of 5th is also called cycle of fifth. Meaning you progress every 5th tone back and forth.
Try this
C - F - Dm - G - Em - Am - F - B dim - C
Notice how you skip to 5th below for every successive chord.
Now for fun, add additional notes, but play the bass of these chords not the root, but its third.
For example
CM7/E - FM7/A - Dm7/F - G7/B - Em7/G - Am7/C - FM7/A - B dim / D - CM7 - E
Now you find the bass moving 5th down, but when u listen to it, you geta different "mood"

Kishmu thanks for ur time and explanation. I am saving all this stuff in a file. (Of course, it has ur name on it, to avoid cpoy right things). Just kidding:-)
The slash chords, that too with added 7ths or 6ths like CM7/E, Dm7/F are very tough for me to decipher from listening, its as if the bass note misleads me. Either I pay too much attention to the bass note or I dont hear the chord properly with other instruments going on (my inability). Is there a way to get them right? I wud greatly appreciate it if u can help me.

"i have listened to some of your compositions in the respective URLs and found them really greaaat.

Jay: response after one (superficial) listening: very well done. the main theme is simple and catchy. i somehow feel this song is not necessarily "alive" but drowsy :-)). NOM :-)) actually, this is a kind of song i asked about a LONG time ago. thanks.

Thanks. This was the first song that I did where I didnt have the name of the song in my mind...I think although its slow at places it has a very energetic feeling.
hihi, You asked for a song like this long time ago?
- From: hihi:-) (@ 128.111.113.76)
on: Wed Mar 20 21:12:55 EST 2002
yes :-) i mentioned about the third number in nothing but wind (the name goes something like song of the soul - it has a repeated bass over which a simple melody is developed and this whole things repeats forever :-) ); i was looking for some such meditative number. i wrote about three/four months ago. "alive" has that meditative feel; the rhythm work is good in this song (notwithstanding a few lapses - maybe my ears are deceiving :-) ), the whole package is good.

Mac is supposedly better for audio recording but I've been reading a lot of forums and seems like off late there's no big advantage of Mac over PC. Win XP and 2000 are very stable. I think its because Mac OS was stable in the early days of digital recording and it became the standard. But now things are changing.
BTW..I made the PC recording plunge. Bought a new Dell system :) Planning to use Logic or Cubase with Delta 66 or 1010 card.
I've been checking out the soft synths..they're awesome. You guys should try it too. They do everything that a synth like Triton does..but all in software. Sounds are great.
UV: I'm at: jayks @ yahoo
Sam..I've worked with cakewalk a bit. Send me a mail.
