Wonderful, wonderful song to occupy mindspace for the next few days. As Subbu said, the sheer virtuosity of the team behind (and in front of the camera) this song can only be longed for.
Even discounting for the prejudices that come with nostalgia, few can challenge the fact that this is a shining example of perfect team work at its zenith in TFM history. Distilled pleasure, this one goes just as fine with rasam as with bacardi!

Digression.
Subbu.....great writeup on APN. I was especially intrigued by your observation on trick shots in APN movies. I too have noticed that almost all APN movies had some well-executed trick shots (for that era)! Any idea if he had an "asthana" camera man?
Saravanan.....let's see if your db has entries on camera men as well:)
End digression.

AhA! kalakkarEL bb. pramAdham.
Subbu- great write-up. I had to check if it was indeed not Saravanan, especially with the banner names:)
Who sings the konnakOl part?
Even in such a powerful song, PS excels with her trademark sweetness. note the part when she sings "Ma Madhimigu Mudhalva" in between the heavy sangathis & upper scale acrobatics. simply exquisite. in spite of all this vocal swara & sangeetha jAlam, one can still feel that the "na"s stay "na"s, the "Na"s stay "Na"s, the "la"s , "La"s and so on.. this is a showcase piece on the power of the tamil word & its correct pronunciation. The new writers/singers can learn a lot for this one song.

Subbu, excellent writeup.
Manisegaran writes in the KVM thread:
PART 22
THE ONE SONG THAT DESERVES SPECIAL MENTION
But the greatest song was Mannavan Vanthaanadi Thozhi by P. Suseela. Now I shall elaborate. A song had to be composed for Padmini to dance in the presence of Sivaji Ganesan.
I had stated earlier that out of the 1500 songs that Kannadasan has penned for KVM easily 800 were written and sent over to KVM which KVM composed on his own (Kanadasan’s Chinthithen Chanthithen)This was one of those. Kannadasan proved something here that he had indepth knowledge of ragas. We listen to some surangal in this song- They were written by Kannadasan, and KVM found it easy to compose it. KVM himself was astonished at Kavinyar’s depth. When the song became success, KVM had this to say, “Antha pugazh ellaaam Kannadasunukku thaan” (Thiraiyum Isayum program) Pugazhendi said in the same program that it is unusual for any lyrics writer to write lyrics in the absence of MD but Kannadasan not only did that, but also supplied wonderful surangal.
Then came the challenge. There was a popular opinion that only P Leela or MLV could sing carnatic based dance songs. APN wanted P Leela to sing, but KVM said P. Suseeela could do it. There was a challenge. KVM took the challenge. When the recording was about to start, Sivaji Ganesan himself had encouraged Suseela to sing it well (P. Suseela’s interview in Singapore live show, in the presence of Sivaji) KVM made P Suseela sing and she did it well and KVM won. P Suseela also proved that she is a versatile singer who could even excel in heavily carnatic based dance songs.
Then the picturisation. The song lsts for five minutes, but the shooting went on for 10 days.Sivaji came out of the make up room, and walked majestically like a king. The technical staff outside the make up room immediately stood up to welcome a king who had entered the studio, the realising that it was Sivaji Ganesan in make up.
During the picturisation, we could see Sivaji walking very majestically, may be an overacting they say. But my question is could any other star do even this overacting? People had spent millions to make up their faces to look like old man. But Sivaji spent one rupee of arithaaram to look like an old man. The paper Kalki never publishes photos of Cinema people, but Appar Sivaji ganesan was the front cover for Kalki in that year. So popular was the movie. APN and KVM and Sivaji were giving treat after treat for Tamilnaadu
The song, after the thogayara is:
Mannavan Vanthaanadi Thozhi
Manjathile Irunthu
Nenjathile Puguntha
Mannavan vanthaanadi Thozhi
Maayavanoi thooyavano
Naayagano naanariyen
Mannnavan vanthaanadi thozhi
Senthamizh Solleduthu Isai Thoduppen- Vanna
Santhathile Kavithai Sarangkoduppen
Moonru Thamizh Maalai Soottiduven- Ini
Muppozhuthum Katpanayil Atputhamaii vaaznthirukkum…
This song was so popular that KVM received all round appreciations from all MDs, including MSV himself who was his healthy competitor. Whenever there was a live show of KVM, MSV would ask this song to be played. MSV felt that the hall would liven itself when this song is sung.
(Where are you KVM and Kannadasan?)

An extraordinary performance by Smt. P Susheela endowed with a divine voice. Wish I could write volumes......analyzing her tonal textures....but it would be never ending.

Thanks to those good hearts for your appreciative notes.
Special note: PS’s most favorite ragas are KalyaaNi and Mohanam, besides many others :-)
Sriram: If I understand KonnakOL as the "nattuvaangam jathi", then it was by Master DhandayudhapaaNi PiLLai.
Suresh, APN_fan: If I can say something more about APN and his films, APN did a great job even without the great starts like Sivaji, Padmini, Savithri etc. It was fine for APN to work with the THEN upcoming and budding starts like Sivakumar, Lakshmi, Kumari Padmini and even Seerghazhiyaar. KB SundaraambaaL also featured in Kaaraikaal Ammayaar. He did a fantastic mega hit film with ‘kutty’ artistes - “Vaa Raaja Vaa” (1969). B'coz he was dependent on his strengths only :-)
But not sure of the exact reasons, APN's films (mostly) in 70’s did not satisfy the entire mass thereby failed to fill APN's purse too!!
Thirumalai Thenkumari (1970) – Super hit !!!
KaN Kaatchi (1971)
Agathiyar (1972)
Kaaraikaal Ammayaar (1973)
Thirumalai Deivam (1973)
Raja Raja Chozhan (with Sivaji - 1973) – It was released in Umapathi’s theatre Anand (hopeless maintenance), as it was one of the few theatres which had special screen for Cinemascope films.
Mel naattu marumagaL (1975) - was a great commercial hit
Navarathnam (MGR and nine starts incl., Latha, Jayachitra, Sripriya, Jaya, PR Varalakshmi, Kumari Padmini, Zarina wahaab etc- 1977) – This was the bomb-shell for APN
I am not very sure whether Gumaasthaavin MagaL (1974) and Sisu Balan (with Manohar 1974) were from APN’s hands.
But whether it was successful or failure, APN’s dedication for sharp and meaningful dialogues, power of the situations, thirai kadhai for the epic stories were his added strength.
Many tried to use APN’s line of code and produced many direct devotional and samooga-devotional movies like Namma veettu deivam, Adhi parasakthi, ThuNaivan, Annai VeLaankanni, Annai Abhiramai, Sakthi Leelai, Deivam, Amman AruL, Ganga Gowri, Devi Shree Karumari Amman, Swami Ayyapaan, ThiruvaruL, VeLLi Kizhamai Viradham, Dasaavathaaram, Kanchi Kamakshi, Varuvaan vadivelan, Suprabhatham etc. Some were hit and attracted huge crowd but many others failed. May be, our Junta lost their interest to value the work of APN in 70’s.
But am sure, even now if you happen to watch any of APN’s movies, you WILL NOT regret.

Naaz, nice succint way of summing up.
I don't remember this movie much. Which king was Sivaji portraying? Did Padmini come for only this song in the movie?

bb, from my old memory, Sivaji acted as Kulashekara Paandiya Mannan. After seeing Padmini's dance, he get that 'Kick' and tries to 'abase' (thamizhil padikkavaum) Padmini. But Padmini advises him that he is a protector and such personality should not be after 'abasing' acts. She asks him to taste different kinds of sweets. Sivaji tastes one by one. Then 'how all these sweets taste'? He replies 'every thing tastes sweet only'. Padmini gives a tactful reply 'adhai polave thaan pengaLum... appidi maharani-yidam illadadhu ennidam enna irukka mudiyum' + some more advice!!!! Then that sparks Sivaji to get a break-thru... he gets involved in listening to the devotional stories of Sundarar, MaNicka vachakar, Thirugyana sambandhar and Thirunaavukkarasar. Thus the film..
Can anyone confirm and/or add more?

athAn bb, ippOvAvathu Ramba joLs vENdAm :). Apart from the amazing piece of composition, singing, Sivaji's 'nadai' acting makes you sit up for you to take special notice. Just moments before the song ends, Sivaji totters just a wee bit throughly overcome with lust for Padmini, only a wee bit, a subtle swagger. Beautifully portrayed, it lasts only for a couple of seconds. Wah !! Wah !!! what acting !!!
KVM has embellished the already superb tune with sangathis in the word 'thOzhI'and in the charanam at 'moondru thamizh mAlai soottiduvEn', PS' bass voice rising to the occassion. The beauty of composing a tune for pre-written lyrics comes through very well in this song, the tune expressing the sentiments behind 'nenajthhilE amarntha', the second time PS puts it through. A truly memorable song !!!

Listening to this song compelled me to watch the movie once-more!!
Few confirmation and more sharing of info:
1. IT IS under the banner “Shri Vijayalakshmi Pictures”.
2. Dance composer: PS Gopalakrishnan, Asthaana Dance Master for APN’s films
3. Camera Man (oLippadhivu director): K.S. Prasadh, who continued with APN till Thirumaal perumai, I guess. No name for shown for “Thandira katchigaL” :- ( But "Kalai" (art) was shown with "Ganga".
4. Gemini Ganesh’s name was shown with title “Nadiga Mannan” NOT “Kaadhal Mannan” :- )
5. The starting thogaiyara of “Mannavan Vandhandi” was completed in a single shot. It was with six different pieces of “vazhga vazhga”.. Amazing !!! Differnt music instrument was used for the interludes in Thogayara.
6. “Aathu veLLam” song was accompanied by SC Krishnan along with ALR and LRE. TMS also joins at the end, for Sivaji.
7. One more song bit that I missed was “Sadhuram marai dhaan thudhi kondu vaNangum” by Master Maharajan. This was to close the temple doors by just singing in praise of “ThaaL”.
8. At the end, Siva-Sakthi dance takes place to give Dharshan to Thirunavukkarasar. The dancing pair was RS Raju and Kumari Vidhya Murthy (as shown in title cards). Vidya is none other than Srividya, daughter of MLV+Ramamurthy !!!
9. I said the king name (that Sivaji acted in “MV” song) was Kulasekara Paandiyan. It was not used anywhere. He was referred as Manna, Arasay, Vendhey etc only. Apologize for the slip :- (
10. A starange jodi in the movie... Muthuraman and Savithri as Appodhi adigaL and Arul Mozhi. I do not think they paired in any other movies.
bb, fortunately Arasi (wife) of that king was not shown... otherwise we could pOdu an "O" for Padmini (so pretty yaar!!!).
Ok wait for the next SOTD!!!
