Chinna chinna from MR, i still do not think its kiravani. it sounds more like gaurimanohari because of d2. Prominent d2 in "aasaigal" in phrase "ennavo aasaigal". I dont hear dha anywhere else. But I hear n2 making it not fully gaurimanohari.
Sendura poove also is in gaurimanohari with n2 touches... goes like this: pSRGS nSppp. Chinna chinna also starts in tarasthayi - GRS GRS (chinna chinna) nSnp (vanna kuyil), so Anu thats why i think you feel the similarity.

Have a musical weekend!
Some ?s for all:
1. Which is the only raga with 3 swaras?
2. And which is the type of folk music which revolves around just 3 swaras ?
May be out of topic but worth knowing more. enna ketkaatheenga, i am still trying to find out!

IR, thanks..naan verum pallavi la vara sila phrases vechu sonnen..it does seem to be closer to chakravaagam now :-) A better example of a very good usage would have been "indra thaaragai sundara devathai" from Manal Kayiru
Anu, the song you were referring to is probably "aarum athu aazham illa" from Mudhal Vasantham, a Chandrasekhar starrer

IR:
the notes you gave s g3 p n2 s isnt for valaji?
BMK's three note (includes sa) ragas are
omkari: sm2ps-spm2s and
sarvasrI: sm1ps-spm1s.
BMK's lavangi is a four note raga: Mela #1, s r1 m1 d1 s, s d1 m1 r1 s
Mahathi: There are two mahathis I found:
43 mahathi s g2 m2 p d1 n1 s / s n1 d1 p m2 g2 s
20 mahathi s p p d1 n2 s / s n2 p g2 r2 s

Vasu, valaji has a dhaivatham note too... dha2.
The notes I gave was for the BMK version of Mahati. I am not sure if the other versions of Mahathi are popular or have krithis. :-)

Vasu, one omkari(Branching from Kharakarapriya) goes with the following notes

Sa Dha2 Pa Ma1 Ga2 Ri2 Sa

Inikku ennane theriyalai ore Pudhu pudhu vishayama kathukka chance kedachu irukku.....
Is adhisaya Ragam in Abhoorva ragangal set to Mahathi...although the song lyrics says chakravaham("Indhira Logathu Chakaravaham")BMK claimed that to be Mahathi in a Saptaswarangal episode....
Vasu,Thanx very much for clarifying senthoorapoove..intha Ni2 thaan I think gave me a feeling of Natbairavi(many common swarams for Natabairavi and GM right?).......

IR:
your right. Valaji is audava raga with d2.
Ram:
GM and NB differ by two swaras: d and n. GM uses d2,n3 while NB uses d1,n2. GM differs with Kharaharapriya on N. (Kh uses N2), but its difficult to get kharaharpriya feeling on film songs i believe coz of usage of plain notes.
Yes adisaya ragam uses s g3 p n2 s and is in bmk's mahathi.
- From: Vasu (@ 129.42.208.141)
on: Fri Apr 5 17:44:13 EST 2002
Anu,
i think i said it was in valaji coz all the way i was thinking valaji as sg3pn2S. Only after IR reminded that it has d2, i realized the error. So adhisaya ragam for most part is mahathi but last charanam in bhairavi.
Ram,
Even if lyrics says 'chakravaham' it does not describe the raga name in this context.

Vasu, Ram, IR,
Actually there are a few more ragas claimed to have been created by BMK with the names similar to ones already existing for long.
For instance,
jana sammoodhini (which is a janya of Harikhamboji) - a famous Purandaradasar kriti and a lovely rendition by Maharajapuram Sri Santhanam.
The swaras go this way
Sa Ri2 Ga3 Pa Dha2 Ni2 Sa
Sa Ni2 Dha2 Pa Ga3 Ri2 Sa
jana sammoodhini(janya of MaaraRanjani and seems to be a blend of Mohanam & Bowli) by BMK (there is a jayadeva ashtapathi rendered in this raaga)
Sa Ri2 Ga3 Pa Dha1 Sa
Sa Dha1 Pa Ga3 Ri2 Sa
this is just for information!

Anu,
Janasamodhini is around for quite sometime I guess "Govinda Ninna Namave Chanda" is a famous piece....also there is a Hindustani Version to the same raga which sounds like Valaji....

Anu, I forgot to keep a copy of the mail I sent to Ram. I think he would demand help with his homework if we want him to send us a copy :-) Ram, konjam please andha mail a anu kku forward paNNunga!
I would agree with Vasu on Adhisaya raagam's ragam.
Anu, BMK loLLU kku per ponavar ;-) The first version of Janasammodhini you have listed is the most authentic version. I remember some songs that were mentioned in ROS in this raga - Old Responses noNdaNum :-) Govinda ninne is the most popular song in this raaga. Lalgudi school la they sing Yeththanai kodi inbam in this raagam . Although BMK claims to have his own version of JS, if you look at the notes, they are nothing but notes of Vaasanthi!!!!!!!!
Ram, JS itself is Valaj plus Ri2.

Such lively discussions !!! This is one of the coolest thread :-)
Anu...some other Sarasangi songs that u wud find interesting,
a)Muthu Muthu - Periya Veetu Panaikaran,
b)Pudhusu Pudhusu - Manidha Jaathi,
c)Enrenrum Aanandame - Kadal Meengal.
Vasu/Kupps, i had earlier listed "Thogai ila mayil" as Tharalam (sa ri2 ga3 pa dha1 Ni3 Sa), but playing the song i cud see clear use of Ma2. Lathangi gets my vote :-).
IR/Ram, "Chinna raasaave" shud only be Lathangi. "Muchukku Mucchukku raavellam pechukku" line for sure uses Ma2 (prathi m). [ May be i need an ENT Specialist too ;-) ]
Regarding 'sree ranga ranga' mahanadhi song, just the pallavi lines "inbam pongidum gangai neeraadi" uses Mohanam scale (Dha2) if i am not wrong. Best to call Hamsadhwani with Dha2 :-)
Anu - "Karayaadha manamum undo" from Varusham 16 is Hemabhushini.Yengeyo paartha gyabhagam ;-) (Ram, ungalukkum engeyo paartha gyabhagama irukkume indha hemabhushini)

But Anu, to be on the safer side, call "Karayaadha Manamum Undo" as Chandrakouns with Ga3. [Naan appadi thaan list panni vachirukken :-)].
