R.R.- 'Anbe un peyar enna rathiyo' (JC-VJ) is from Jayendra Movies' Idhaya Malar- 1976. The film was directed by Gemini Ganesh (!) and produced by Manian/ Vidwan Lakshmanan. It starred Kamal, Sujatha, Gemini Ganesh & Sowcar Janaki. Another good song in it is 'Chendu malli poo pol azhagiya pandhu' (KJY-VJ)

I am looking at the lyrics in new light now. I had thought she is just wryly reflecting on how people are misconstruing their platonic relationship when there is nothing more to it- I had understood the first line as 'Nam iruvar idaiye ondrum illai', and developed my interpretation on these lines.
Of course, now you have thrown a different light on it :)

Thanks for the fine reading and translation! The corresponding diction and choice of endings made for a - discovery. And was that fast! :-) I will have to make a list of Urdu songs for you to transcribe...kabhie kabhie?

I'll take the wry and add a bit of manipulation. It is a curious song, and the motivation of the poet/character is puzzling. My close reading was closer to CVs. I think the "character" is a clever (source of the wry)person that is trying to prolong a non-starter relationship. She assumes a certain wisdom and worldliness of the "Of course, its not what they think! You and I know that!" kind. The hope is that it might materialise into what "they" the log-gers think.
Two lines in the song give away the hidden intent (in my reading): Mai Karoon Tumse Mohabbat Ki Koi Baat Yaqeen Math Karna... and the Tere Dil Mein Tho Koi Aur Basa Hai Shayad.
I'm sure you can turn the song around with those clues and shine a new light!

I've for long been an avid fan of yours.Theres one Question I've been itching to ask you for a long time now.How do you escape being ''bitten-at'' by the wife for spending hours & hours on the forum?? My wife certainly doen't appreciate the time I spend here!!...Any tips would be appreciated.

Actually I don't spend 'hours & hours' here, though it may seem like that. I visit only 2-3 threads, and all put together it would rarely exceed one hour a day!
Anyways, since you asked, here are some tips:
1. Office-la net connection edhukku irukku, vandhu jollya appoppo indhapakkam etti paarthuttu ponga!
2. Office-la mudiyalana, veetla thaan paarka mudiyumna, then my only suggestion- Don't be twice shy ;))

The contrast couldn't be starker. If En Ullam was Self absorption, Bol Re is Self lessandlessness. If the former was primed in the arts of passive-aggressive seduction, the latter is an ace in teary-eyed drama (and of mythic proportions.)
One's wears golden pumps, the other is, literally, down in the dumps.
It's true, that Brindavan is no fun place to be.
It's a place of loss, separation and doe eyed women in miniature paintings. And it's a place where the monsoons can be murder. Lonely people have too much time to kill, or didn't you know that?

There you have it, a situation straight out of the lush green meadows of Mathura (or the other place, it's the same thing really) a woman in dire need of some TLC and a blanket of physical warmth. Virahini (one who is separated from the beloved) get with the program, girl, you feel like saying. Why are you talking to birds that really don't exist? You don't see the crows around, or what?
The Papihara is a hoax. It does not exist. There are koyals and mynahs and sparrows and more crows. But the Papihara is pure turkey. It's a bird made and visible only to Virahinis in heat. "Pi" the birds call, and the women whirl in piyalessness.
Papiha is the same with all the feathers in Hindi. Around these parts, the braj people like to prolong all things, Bitwa or ya. We love to embellish. You must check out those painting before you leave.

Even if that's somewhat of a metereological stretch, the image is arresting for its heart as cloud, desire the storm, and rain the message. The personal, from the eyelashes take this drop - to go and drench that alien land - the verse moves with the grace of carefree wings.

How one misses those days when clouds carried messages, birds spoke in consoling tones, and things were done with such indirect excess, it made you go all gooey with love and other directly classical feelings! They don't make birds like that any more, for sure. You only see them in painting now.

There's no shortage of tears in this region. Sometimes it's hard to tell if it's the monsoon or the Virahini Spring Donation Drive. Makes everything kinda damp for a bit, but only just. Not quite Cherapunji.

The concept of Kanya-Daan and Ownership (wife as man's possession, and father's donation (with dowry) for husband to possess) is all about culture before Yahoo personals. The Virahini, attached as she is to the male figures in her life, cannot even deem to think of "moti" (tears/riches) as her own. They are a gift from her father (he who gave her life) and a gift she shares in gratitude with the messenger. She knows she's over-reaching in this generosity (with Babul's Daan) of sharing a tear (which doesn't belong to her) but she's also brought up to say thank you...and just this once, with a debt citation, dad won't mind.
Desire is the thread that binds both the songs. In one it booms and in the other is glooms. Self comes First in the first, and Self comes Last in the last.
Doppelganger? No.
One's a full tank. The other is perpetually running on empty.

Oh Naaz, how beautiful! I sang the whole song to myself (and imagined Vani singing it all over again right in front of my eyes - bless her voice!) reading this and "Nith mann tarse aise gaanon ke liye!!". Fantastic write-up, thanks for that. And what continuous contrast you have provided between the two songs! Great, great! Please continue to provide such stuff.

Sorry CV I almost missed it.As a known Tamil fanatic my opinion on gazals have been less sympathetic.
but you have done a superb job bring it within the frame work of Tamil poetry ,yet retaining the gazal flavour.these days VJ thread is becoming a poets' playard with Naaz,Saravanan and you trying to outdo each other.Audience il naan ini aajar.

Thanks for those encouraging words! I spoke to some friends, whose knowledge of Urdu is better. They confirmed what I already knew! That I had taken liberty with the meaning in a few places! I am giving below those instances, though I am still unsure of some areas:
'appazhukkaRRa kaathal onRinai ivvulagOr' should have been 'oomaik kaathal onRinai ivvulagOr'
'Kaalam unnai ennidam adamaanam anRO vaiththathu'
should have been 'Kaalam unnai ennidam iRantha kaalaththil anRO vaiththathu'
When she says 'Mu Se Bekaar Ki Baatein Bhi Nikal Jaati Hain', I am not sure if she says ' en vaayilirunthu sila samayam veeNaana varththaigaL vanthu viduginRana' or ' narambillaa naakkugaL vettip pEchchu pEsuvadhenna inRaa nERRaa! ' and I have chosen the latter!
' un manathil vERu evaLO uRaigiRaaL pOlum!' could have been more elegant as 'un uLLaththil vERu evaLO uRaigiRaaL pOlum!'
