Folks,
All times in EST +10:30 for IST.
I had been to ARR's Live concert in Long Island, NY. Apart from 2 or 3 songs out of a total of around 25 to 30 songs all the Music was DEFINETLY played from tracks. ARR had hired musicians locally (ie., in the US) to make such a drama or what???.
Its totally a pity to see a established MD to trick and fool people with track music played in live shows. He should have tried to bring the real live music from his troop whether it comes out good or bad.
I saw most of the foreign musicians idle most of the time and the good part about it is that they did not pretend to play music as opposed to their Indian counterparts who were pretending all thro the show.
Any more obervations are welcome.

VM might have infuenced the State Government (his friendship with MuKa is known) to pressure/influence the US Consulate in delaying the Visas :)

This is a report of the Ar RAhman show in LA....report may not be
the best one, but I hope it is in good detail for those who didn't attend.
The show started at around 7:55pm. Some dancers/musicians dressed in flashy
clothes entered the auditorium from the main entrance and walked towards the
stage, playing some kind of percussion instrument simultaneously. Sivamani
was one of them. Javed Jaffrey (Hindi dancer) gave a brief introduction on
how everyone starts listening to music even before they are born and some
such crap...and he began the countdown.
10..9..8..7..6..5..4..3..2..1..0...then the curtain lifts and the band
starts playing Rangeela theme song....with Anupama humming the song. This
happened ofcourse with a great ovation. The compere was Javed Jaffrey
(wasn't really needed...he was only pissing off some junta with his
nonsense). The song list is below:
2. Oruvan Oruvan muthalali (SPB....superb response from all Tamil
Junta...and whistles)
3. Que Sara Sara Sara....from Pukar(Shankar Mahadevan (SM), Kavitha
Krishnamurthy (KK))
4. Choti Choti asha ......( Sadhna Sargam (SS).....one of the best singers
in the show.....she was almost perfect in all the songs she sang)
5. Thaniye Thannanthaniye (SM...superbly sung song...he has a very good voice)
6. Ea ajnabi..from Dilse (Udit Narayan, Sujatha who had a flawless voice)
7. Pachai nirame...(Hariharan was introduced in this song and he received a
major applause but he goofed in the lyrics...but the laser lights changed to
the appropriate 'colours' during the song.....Clinton sang the 'sagiye'
part, but didn't sound like the original recording)
8. Javed Jaffrey started talking nonsense again and praised Rahman saying
that his song comes from 'the sky' and his heart and asked Rahman to say
something from the bottom of his heart and Rahman started singing 'Dilse
re'......
9. Rabta jogi...from taal (Sukhwinder singh and Saadhna sargam...Sukhwinder
sing cashed in this song and the american orchestra was very involved in
this song..meaning a lot of musicians were playing violins/trumpet/trombone
etc.)
10. Jiya Jale (from Dilse by Saadhna sargam....very well executed
song...Clinton and Srinivas were involved in the chorus - the mallu rap
which comes in between. for those of you who don't know, Clinton is the guy
who sings 'sagiye' in pachai nirame and who sang 'endrendrum punnagai' in
alaipayude)
11. Mukkala Muqabla (from Kaadalan (hindi version) sung by SM and Dominique)
12. Ishq bina..from Taal (by Sujatha and Srinivaasan......Sujatha was perfect)
13. Jugalbandhi by Sivamani, one mridangist and one other ghatam player...I
am sorry I forgot the names of the mridangist and ghatam player. But this
was a very good piece. Sivamani, especially was very impressive.
Throughtout the show, he never seemed to have got tired of playing. He was
playing with full enthusiasm till the end...he was completely surrounded by
various percussion instruments.
14. Taal se Taal mila ..from Taal (very good orchestration by the New York
musicians)
15. Kaadal Rojave/Roja Janeman (this was a superb piece by SPB and
Sujatha...Sujatha was as usual very impressive. SPB started off the song in
Hindi and suddenly switched to the original Tamil version, when you should
have seen the applause by the Tamil audience....this probably is an
indication that original version is the best!)
16. Suntha hai mera mera....from pukar (by Udit and Kavitha
Krishnamurthy...Udit was very good in this song...just like the original
recording)
17. Nahi Saamne from Taal (by Hariharan...was sung very well. There was
some good dance also for this song. Rahman was playing the keyboard....he
did for most of the songs.)
18. Snehidane...from alaipayuthey (my favourite!....marvellous performance
by Saadhna Sargam...infact it sounded better than the original...only thing
was that Srinivas took off the song on a different sruthi and changed it
later because the instrumentalists were playing it on a different pitch!
But that was soon forgotten. Srinivas was very impressive
otherwise...looked very humble,etc. This song evoked a very good response)
19. Rang De from Thakshak (Saadhna sargam...again a very good performance
and an apt response)
20. Sandhana thendralai from Kandukonden (by SM and Kavitha
Krishnamurthy....very well sung by SM. the western orchestration was
superb...the violin interludes and stuff..)
21. Konjam Nilavu from thiruda thiruda (Anupama sang this song just like
she sung it six years back...this song had some major dancing and laser
lights + crackers).
10 minute break
The piano was set up during the break.
22. Some female called Carol (born and brought up in Canada I suppose) sang
a piece from Bombay dreams for which Rahman is collaborating with andrew
lloyed webbers. She was ok and the piece wasn't extra ordinary or anything.
23. Bombay Theme music...the western orchestra was extremely good and they
were all in very good unison, especially the violinists.
24. Unplugged is what they called it: four singers - SPB, hariharan,
Sujatha and Kavitha Krishnamurthy came to the stage and sat on four tall
chairs with Rahman on the Piano. This was supposed to be without any other
instruments but the piano. There was a brief but good talk by SPB saying
that music transcends all languages and that their mother tongue is 'music'
and so on. SPB started off by singing Anjali Anjali (from Duet) in Telugu
and received a major applause...Hariharan continued along the same mood by
singing 'Dheemi Dheemi' from 1947 earth. Sujatha was the best of the lot
when she started 'kal nahi..' from Vishwavidhatta and switched over to it's
tamil original version 'nettru illatha maatram'. She was absolutely
flawless. Kavitha Krishnamurthy started off reciting the lyrics for 'katre
un vaasal' from rhythm, in Hindi and suddenly developed that into the song
itself. She was very melodious. Rahman was playing the background for all
the songs continuously without any break.
25. Rahman and Clinton paired up and sang 'humma humma' both in Tamil and
Hindi, with Rahman singing in Tamil. Sivamani was very good at drums.
26. Taal instrumental music was played and it slowly developed into 'ruth
aagayi re' from 1947 earth, with Sukhwinder singh in the lead.
27. 'kaadalenum thervezhuthi'...the hindi version of this song was sung by
Srinivas and SS. Srinivas was very good. He was super.
28. Mustafa Mustafa was sung by rahman. He removed his outer jacked and
wore a green cap and came down on the stage and received so much applause
for this. People didn't stop saying 'once more' after the end of this song.
Rahman said that he would do it again but there was not much time left.
29. Chayya Chayya from dilse was sung by Sukhwinder sing and dominique.
There was too much response for this song, but Sukhwinder didn't put too
much effort and it didn't sound like the original version. Nevertheless,
the response was great.
30. Smaiyai from KK by Clinton and Devan which slowly developed into
'Dhandiya aattamum aada' in Hindi by Udit Narayan, which in turn developed
into 'samaj gaya' from Taal by Sukhwinder and finally ended with 'taal se
taal mila'.
31. Rahman ended the show with 'Maa tuje salaam'. He sang this song with a
group of small children dancing, wearing clothes with Indian flags on them.
All the singers joined him towards the end and they all joined and raised
their hands to conclude the song.
In the few words that Rahman spoke he said that LA was the best
audience. I wasn't very convinced by that because I heard that there were
tens of thousands of people for his concert in Toronto. I was a bit
disappointed with the concert because he didn't sing that many tamil songs
and he left out great songs from movies like Jeans, Iruvar, Minsaara Kanavu,
Padayappa, Mudhalvan etc. Chitra was missing in the show. UnniKrishnan
would have definitely made a difference, but he wasn't there either. There
were 42 instrumentalists on the whole. Rahman was playing on the keyboard
for most of the songs. Dancers did a very good job..they must have really
rehearsed a lot because they were dancing for most of the songs and the show
lasted four hours! On the whole, it was well worth the 55 dollars that I
spent. I had a pair of binoculars also with me and I got to see all my
favourite singers. The show was well organised and Rahman was truly
professional. I left the auditorium with a small disappointment that I
couldn't meet any of the artists. Well, they had to close the auditorium
and were driving the people out of it. Anyways, I was more than happy on
Friday evening!

It's an awesome report.
Thanx for the excellent narration.
I think, except a couple(more specifically 2/3) songs, the order,and songs are the same here in the SFO too. Even Rahman taking his coat off happened here too. And same with Bombay Dreams,JJ asking Rahman to say something and then he starting singing DilSe Re..
