I recently read this Music Magazine article, posted by Naaz in another thread.
http://www.themusicmagazine.com/rahmanbsides.html
An excerpt:
"A R Rahman's success in creating hit numbers that simultaneously set the cash registers ringing and the dance floors swinging has been well documented. However, unfortunately lost in the din of Chaiyya Chaiyyas and Muqala Muqablas are unsung numbers (pun unintended), songs that can soothe you with their melody or gently torment you with their pain, tracks that never busted the charts for various reasons, tracks that are unlikely to make it to the compilation albums.
This list explores a few dark and obscure numbers that would have probably ended up as B-sides, but that nevertheless merit attention for their artistic brilliance.
1. Dholna - Thakshak/Mehboob/Sukhwinder Singh...
2. Pyaara Sa Gaon - Zubeidaa/Javed Akhtar/Lata Mangeshkar...
3. Zahreela Pyar - Daud/Mehboob/Asha Bhonsle, Leena Chandra Das...
4. Ishwar Allah - 1947/Javed Akhtar/Sujatha Mohan, Anuradha Sriram...
5. Thenmerku Paruvakarru - Karuthamma/Vairamuthu/ Unnikrishnan, Chitra...
6. Sengaatrea - Taj Mahal/Vairamuthu/T K Kala...
7. Vidukadhaiya - Muthu/Vairamuthu/Hariharan...
8. Poogum Vazhiyellam - Ratchagan/Vairamuthu/Chitra...
9. Roshan Hui Raat - Sapnay/Javed Akhtar/Anuradha Sriram...
10. Mel Isaiyae/Mr Romeo/Vairamuthu/Unni Menon, Swarnalatha, Srinivas, Sujatha..."
I was surprised to see no. 10 on the list as it was my most fav number from Mr Romeo. I believe the Tamil version of no. 9 is Anbendra Mazhayile from Minsara Kanavu.
Another excerpt from the same article:
"Too bad you cannot buy a compilation of these songs from any store. But make yourself one and believe me, with it playing on your stereo, you'd want to hit more reds than greens on your ride to work."
I was inspired enough by those lines upload some of those tracks onto my yahoo briefcase in the past few days. I have the mp3s for 4, 5, 8 and the Tamil version of 9. I'll be uploading no. 6 within the next few days. Those interested, send me an email.
It's usual for certain tracks in ARR's albums to gain mass popularity while some really good numbers get overshadowed despite their excellence, which in some of our opinions, may have deserved more credit than those mass popularity numbers.
This thread is to celebrate those 'unsung' classics.

Dirtyharry, thanks alot for the info.
Anyone else who has info about Oonjal?
Also, is there a website where u can check out the Hindi and Tamil equivalents for ARR's albums? I remember there used to be such a webpage, but I cant find it now.
ROTFL, this is for you:
"Regarding that old MSV song, the similarities between the two are
very very faint, if any in the first place. Its the 'santham' or the
format of the 2 songs thats faintly similar. I'd rather disregard
this allegation as trash.
--Karthik"
and
"...Just for others clarification, try to sing the
old MSV sons lyrics with ARR's tune and vise versa. You will find that both
have a very less similarity and that too in the first line only. ...
S.Karthik"
I believe the first person is Karthik S and the second person is Common Friend (whose emails I have reproduced here without their kind persmission).

kupps,
when u say "sevvaanam punnagai sindhu" I'm not sure which song u r talking about. Is it the sevvaanam from pavithra, which goes like 'sevvaanam chinna pen soodum..'? or is it 'sevvaanam chinna pen thouvum'? by Mano and SPB Pallavi.
And 'sugam sugam' goes like 'ethu sugam sugam athu vaendum vaendum', a classic by SPB and VJ.
But there are more oscure tracks around than you think.
I'd like to add a couple more. From Kadhalan,
1. Indiraiyo Ival Sundariyo by Sunandha & Minmini
2. Katru Kuthirayile by Sujatha & Minimi (B-Sides)

I know both songs pretty well. Lest you call me stubborn, this will be my last posting on this subject.
Do not sing "Pennalla pennalla oothaapoo" in the tune of "Pesumani muthu rojaakkal." Instead sing it to the prelude to Pesumani, which goes "Chamchidi chamchidi chamchidi cham... chamchidi chamchidi chamchidi cham" and then decide for your ownself.

ARR's Sevvaanam in Pavithra originally appeared on the cassette on Yoddha as Maanpoove, though it was nowhere to be found in the movie or the dubbed versions of Yoddha.

i messed up...
it is indeed sevvaanam chinna peN from pavithra.
it is indeed edhu sugam sugam from VCCR.
i indeed meant that both are gems from ARR but obscure.
i also wanted to say edhu sugam sugam is the most obscure of all VCCR songs. I did not want to mean it as the MOST OBSCURE SONG OF ARR.
Sorry for that messed up post.
As far as indhirayo of kadhalan is considered, IMO, we cannot include that in unrecognised category as its brother aennavaLae adi aennavaLae is soooper doooper hit. This indhirayo tune wise is almost same as its brother.

ROTFL:
That Pennalla song will seem to be a copy on how you look at it. I read some where that it is an inspiration of a symphony and ARR was praised for that song alone in that movie by some magazine---the magazine at that time termed Uzhavan as ARR' crap....I don't know whether that reviewwe is still alive. Just that I want to see his face. Uzhavan IMHO is one of ARR's best. You listen to each and every song even now, you get the freshness that was ther in 94-95 with rustic feeling.
My opinion is Pudhiya mugham as a whole was really underrated when it was released. Many called that ARR's simply recycled roja.
I will can that as THE BEST of ARR till date. I don't know why...that is the one album that moved and still moves me how many time ever I listen to it.
Many might disagree, but this is MHO.

You are correct about thirakaatha kaatukulla - I dont know what I was thinking when I typed that
The kissa hum likhenge was equivalent to Kaadhal kaditham .... megam ellam kaagitham sung by Janaki and Srinivas (if I am not wrong). Doli Sajake Rakhna was Jodi in tamil also remade as Oonjal.
You are right about the Karisal Tharisal song too. It looked like a patch up of two or three songs. That's why it sounded so different and new.

AFAIK, Doli sajake rakhna(DSR) is not remade as Jodi in thamizh. Infact DSR is a remake of thamizh kaadhalukku mariyaadhai which is turn a remake of malayaaLam anneeyaththi praava (thamizh and malayaaLam director is same -- fazil).
ARR tuned DSR in hindi and the songs of which are imported onto thamizh Jodi plus one additional thamizh song.

In addition to that, the lyric kaadhal kadidham theettavae maegamellaam kaagidham is an inspiration from Kabirdass(Hindi) doha (somewhat similar to kuraL -- a kind of two liner poems). The doha says that "even if we make the entire world(land) as paper and entire ocean water as ink i cannot exhaust writing the greatness about Ram/Krishna (GOD)".

kupps,
u misunderstood as well.. What I meant was that there were more overlooked tracks around other than jus those from pudhiya mannargaL, pavithra and Vandicholai chinnarasu. I got what u meant when u said abt sugam sugam.
btw, wrnt sugam sugam and sevvaanam popular during their release, in TN?? I'm surprised. I found them on most compilations albums, so I assumed they mus have been popular.
IK, thx for the info.
I heard tat Karisal Tharisal came in 3 diff parts in the movie. I dont know how far this is true as I havnt watched the whole movie yet.
Anon, I read at the rahmanonline site that Sevvaanam was used as bgm in Yoddha. If u have watched the movie, didnt u hear it?
ROTFL, I was jus passing u the info I had. Pls clarify wit Karthik S at the copy thread. If it's any consolation to u, kupps seems to think the same, so ur not alone.

kupps, yes u r right abt indhirayo. I didnt think of it tat way.
Ram, I cudnt find the interview wit ARR I mentioned earlier, but here's something else tat comes close to it. It is an ARR chat transcript.
"Das (Mon Aug 17 1998 12:37 IST)
Mr Rahman, what was your inspiration for the 'Chikku bukku chikku bukku' song from Gentleman, if any? I have always loved the beats in that song & also the picturisation which shot Prabhu Deva to fame. Please answer?
A R Rahman (Mon Aug 17 1998 12:43 IST)
Das: I had some golden rules when I started my first film, Roja. These rules were good lyrics, good thought, good melodies, good recording and good presentation. But I think Gentleman was to break the rule completely because Shankar wanted commercial music for the film to break the monotony for the serious subject. So we did it, and gave it full blast to them. Unfortunately the success of the rhythm-based compositions reached the masses much faster than normal Roja type of music and the trend became an epidemic coz it was easy and safe. I was pushed by producers to make similar kind of stuff. But rhythm-based compositions can be listend only for a very short time, though we put in too much energy in polishing it. But later, I realised that the golden rules were going out of my hand. I think we are back to normal."

It is interesting. He also briefly talks about the use of loops when answering a query regarding copying w.r.t telephone manipol.
