I recently read this Music Magazine article, posted by Naaz in another thread.
http://www.themusicmagazine.com/rahmanbsides.html
An excerpt:
"A R Rahman's success in creating hit numbers that simultaneously set the cash registers ringing and the dance floors swinging has been well documented. However, unfortunately lost in the din of Chaiyya Chaiyyas and Muqala Muqablas are unsung numbers (pun unintended), songs that can soothe you with their melody or gently torment you with their pain, tracks that never busted the charts for various reasons, tracks that are unlikely to make it to the compilation albums.
This list explores a few dark and obscure numbers that would have probably ended up as B-sides, but that nevertheless merit attention for their artistic brilliance.
1. Dholna - Thakshak/Mehboob/Sukhwinder Singh...
2. Pyaara Sa Gaon - Zubeidaa/Javed Akhtar/Lata Mangeshkar...
3. Zahreela Pyar - Daud/Mehboob/Asha Bhonsle, Leena Chandra Das...
4. Ishwar Allah - 1947/Javed Akhtar/Sujatha Mohan, Anuradha Sriram...
5. Thenmerku Paruvakarru - Karuthamma/Vairamuthu/ Unnikrishnan, Chitra...
6. Sengaatrea - Taj Mahal/Vairamuthu/T K Kala...
7. Vidukadhaiya - Muthu/Vairamuthu/Hariharan...
8. Poogum Vazhiyellam - Ratchagan/Vairamuthu/Chitra...
9. Roshan Hui Raat - Sapnay/Javed Akhtar/Anuradha Sriram...
10. Mel Isaiyae/Mr Romeo/Vairamuthu/Unni Menon, Swarnalatha, Srinivas, Sujatha..."
I was surprised to see no. 10 on the list as it was my most fav number from Mr Romeo. I believe the Tamil version of no. 9 is Anbendra Mazhayile from Minsara Kanavu.
Another excerpt from the same article:
"Too bad you cannot buy a compilation of these songs from any store. But make yourself one and believe me, with it playing on your stereo, you'd want to hit more reds than greens on your ride to work."
I was inspired enough by those lines upload some of those tracks onto my yahoo briefcase in the past few days. I have the mp3s for 4, 5, 8 and the Tamil version of 9. I'll be uploading no. 6 within the next few days. Those interested, send me an email.
It's usual for certain tracks in ARR's albums to gain mass popularity while some really good numbers get overshadowed despite their excellence, which in some of our opinions, may have deserved more credit than those mass popularity numbers.
This thread is to celebrate those 'unsung' classics.

Thanks for the contributions, everyone.
I am pleasantly surprised to see a handful of people left in this forum with a good knowledge of ARR songs, which goes beyond a convenient list used only to cite (or incite) when making an issue about poor lyrics, mumbai singers, lack of melody etc etc repeatedly.
Vj, was kayil midakkum the one where Nagarjun & Sushmita have to walk up the stairs? If tat's the one, I remember thinking the scene did not sit well wit the song.
Ram, I believe Margazhi thingal Allava from Sangamam is by S.J. and Unnikrishnan and Malargale Malargale from Love Birds was by Chitra & Hariharan.
ARR has talked about having to make commercial music jus to satisfy the director in an interview. I will try to find a link.
ROTFL, it is 'Evano oruvan vaasikriraan', not 'Evano oruthan yaasikkiraan'.
It goes like 'evano oruvan vaasikiraan, iruttillirundhu naan yaasikiren'
I think by Swarnalatha. Quite a depressing song, but beautiful.
Dirtyharry, yes Poo Kodiyin is by Sandhya. I wudnt consider Hindi songs a digression in this thread. Isnt Mona Lisa the Tamil version of Kabhi Na Kabhi?
IK, impressive list.
No 10, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna was dubbed into Tamil as Oonjal, wasnt it? Do u know which is the Tamil equivalent to kissa hum likhenge ?
No 11, Karisal Tharisil, I read somewhere, was actually 3 shorter songs stitched together into one track in the album. I'm not sure how true this is, but in the Taj Mahal CD I had, the song seemed to come in 3 parts.
No 18 is Thirakatha Kaatukkulle isnt it? Doesnt sound to me like 'kootukkulle'.
Tat's my most fav no. from the whole album.
I mus admit I too had overlooked a no of songs in ur list, especially those from Pavitra, Vandi Cholai Chinrasu, Love Birds, etc.
no jalra & ROTFL:
The allegation that pennalla pennalla from Uzhavan was copied from the MSV song was recently dismissed by the experts at the Yahoo Group. Will try to copy and paste the reply here later.
vin,
I thought that Kaathu Kaathu (Chitra & G.V. Prakash?) was one of the more popular numbers, from Uzhavan.
magix,
Sowkiyamma is by Nithyashree, I think and the other good bharathanatyam kind of song from Sangamam is Maargazhi Thingalallava. Wasn't Minnale (SPB) quite a popular number from May Madham??
SDK,
I too think nenje nenje is by KJY and SS, tho cant swear by divinity. Anybody who can confirm? I agree Oruvan Oruvan (SPB) is a good track. In the movie, i think it had a typical Rajini scenario wit Rajini's horse carriage overtaking a Bus. funny.
Sam & Rfan, good numbers, and observations. Will update the singers list later.
I'm surprised no one mentioned Kadhalan, Indian, Star, Jodi etc. They have some overlooked numbers as well. Will add them later.

These are not unsung classics, but classics nevertheless :-)
Nenjil jil –I expect more such songs from ARR. Lovely usage of carnatic base, with modern tinge/style.
Kannukku Mai Azhaghu –Manadhai varudum tune. Especially the flute pieces.
Pudhu Vellai Mazhai –Maniratnam had told ARR,“Indha paatta kaetta kaetpavarkku kulir adikkavendum. ARR did a good job considering it was his first film afterall.
Kaadu potta kaadu – I wud call this an underrated gem of ARR. The pathetic poverty stricken state of a village conveyed so well with music. Crazy as it may sound, Bharathiraja + Malaysia Vasu combo worked well for the mood of the song. Awesome lyrics by VM.
Azhage Sugama – Softest song from ARR, IMHO.

I've been trying to find out the 'so-called' original of Pennalla from Uzhavan, in vain! Can you please name the composition by Mozart that inspired this song? Highly obliged.

Karthik S,
I thought pennalla was resembling paesum maNi muththu rojakkaL piLLaigaL aelloru raajakkaL sung by SPB from the film Neela MalargaL acted by Kamal and Sridevi(as blind woman).
btw sugam sugam vaendum from vandicholai chinna raasu is the most unrecognised gem of ARR from that film. imo other songs from that film were atleast a bit listened to songs.
sevvaanam punnagai sindhu is also a classic number but i'm not sure whether that song is unrecognised or not.
in present scenario we might not get much of UNRECOGNISED gems of ARR. A gem from ARR is widely listened to. Very rare that a pudhiya mannargaL, pavithra and Vandicholai chinnarasu(minus senthamizh naattu thamizhacchiae) will be there for us to hunt for unrecognised gems.

>>>Kaadu potta kaadu
I just wanted to say this. I have little time and I want to write a detailed list of ARR's song that I feel should have made it to charts.
The charanams in that song is simply great. You can actually feel that pain...(also BR's voice makes your ears pain...but...could accept his voice as in overall situation it is a song for sad situation.)
I will do it this week ends.
Do any body remember a song "tumho meri nigha hon pe chaye" by HH in Kabhi Na Kabhi.

1. Kangalil enna Eeramo - Uzhavan
2. Achcham Illai - Indra
3. Vennila Vennila - Iruvar
4. Velli Malare - Jodi but i like the Hindi version better..
5. Mellisaye - Mr. Romeo
6. Monalisa - Romeo
7. Thaniye Thannan Thaniye - Rhythm
8. Sotta Sotta Nanaiyudhu - Taj Mahal - both versions are good
9. Naan Paadum Sandham - Duet
10. Adiparu Mangatha and Madrasa Suthi - May Madham

Who is the expert? :)
Unless some thing is wrong with my ears, Pennalla is definitely an exact copy of Pesu mani muthu rojakkal. Please listen to the latter, before you accept any expert opinion. :)

Common Friend, "tum ho meri" was dubbed/used in tamil also. I think album is monalisa. I will write more later.

Common friend,
tum ho meri is also my favorite as i mentioned in my prev post ..i luv that song :)
Why not: As for Oonjal, there is a lot of talk that this was one album in which ARR was not involved, but comeone else had rehashed DSKR and released it as an album ??...any info on this??..
As for Mona Lisa i guess it is an original (quasi-original :) ???) album.
Yeah i guess tum ho meri nigahon was remade as "Veesum Thendral" in Monalisa, not Sakhiye as i previously mentioned :)

DSKR was also dubbed into "jodi" which had all of DSKR's numbers plus one newbie in "Oru poyavathu sol".
This to a decent extent adds to the credibility of ARR not being involved with "Oonjal"
Whynot: Kissa hum likhenge was remade as "Kadhal Kaditham" in Jodi this again is another beautiful rahman classic, with some awesome lyrics.
:)
