stories, anecdotes, tit-bits etc, related to TFM. A newcomer to
the forum will find this collection very interesting to read. For
example, Ramki mentioned the following story in another thread:
Do you remember the 'vizhiyil vizhundhu' (alaigal oyvadhillai) song?

Folks, please share any such stories, anecdotes and tit-bits that
you know, in this thread. If TFM Group thinks it is sufficiently
interesting, they could even place it in Permanent Topics.

SM,
u accept it or not , rajnikant includes (only) all the popular technicians for his movies , even though that guy is not all that great.
Tell me why he chose K S Ravikumar for muthu , while 2-3 earlier movies of his were directed by suresh krsnaa ,bcos KSR gave 2 mega hits - nAttAmai and some other movie, then came uLLathai aLLi thA , which went onto become a mega hit , the director for his next movie was evident -sundar C for aruNAchalam again KSR came back with natpukkAga (when rajnikant decided to work on his next project)and the director of padayappA was KSR again. Even earlier it was the case , How did RVU bcom the director for yejamAn , bcos he gave a super hit ,chinna gownder.
The same goes with the MDs . When deva was the leading MD (in terms of number of hits )he became his AsthAna MD. Then came arr.
Now , if Raja comes up with 2 mega hits , our man will go back to raja.
By this , i'm not trying to say that he needs all popular technicians to make his movie a hit (his presence itself will be enough ) This is just my observation.

Shankar,
Interesting observation. I didn't notice it. Maybe, Rajni wants to hype up the movie even more (although presence in the movie itself is a big hype - eg. Valli, just because he was the story and dialogue writer of the movie itself was a big hype to that movie. Apart from that, he gave a even bigger boost to the movie, by performing a guest role in that). And, that maybe the reason why he uses all the popular technicians for his movies. 100 naaL odara padam 150 naaL oduradhukku vaaippu irukku illayaa?

Lata M's attempt for the same was a huge failure. She claimed to have sung 30,000 plus songs, but wasn't able to prove it.

Very happy for SPB, my idol ,albeit the task he has undertaken is onerous. I wonder who is the source for all the info he needs. Lata was one of the chief guests at the "30 year 30,000 songs" function along with guess who..MS Subbalakshmi. I am glad about the fact that Lata has always held SPB at her highest esteem and has been openly praising him whenever possible. Guys, did you watch the live program featuring Lata and SPB telecast in Sony TV ?

SPB's greatest difficulty would be in providing the Ginnes folks with "proof" or "evidence" that is acceptable to them. In India, even the artists themselves have no idea about these numbers because of the huge volumes of songs they record every day! Even when Lata's name was in the Guinnes book, the citation said that "LM is reported to have recorded over 25,000 songs...". A lot of people, even movie/music big-shots in India, were sceptical about Lata's "reported" numbers. It is going to be a very difficult, but not impossible, task for SPB.

sriram,
it's not the question of who sang more numbers. Lata wasn't able to prove that she has recorded more than 25k songs. Later when asked for proof , she said some mistake has happened and that she has sung for just above 20k. I donno if she was able to prove that.

Some "gems" from an interview with TMS telecast recently under the title "anda naal nyapagam":
1. To a question as to why he is not singing in movies whereas his contemporaries like PS, SJ, KJY and actors like SG are all active..."You see, it is not that I have stopped singing. It is they who have kept me away from the scene. I sang all the songs for the movie THAI NAADU (?) and it was a super hit - all the songs were a rage at that time. It was by a director called ABAVANAN and the MD was Ilayaraaja. I heard from ABAVANAN - it is not my saying - that all the singers went to him and pleaded with ABAVANAN and Ilayaraaja that "please do not hit us below the belt; TMS has been singing for 45 years. It is now time that we also prosper. If that great voice continues to be in the scene, what will happen to our careers ?"
Another humble one to a question as to why TMS has not sung for Ilayaraaja. Our man says with his typical humility and oozing charm, " Oh! I have sung so many hit songs for him. But all the praises for those hit songs did not go to Ilayaraaja. The verdict from the masses was that TMS has sung so nicely..it was not the MD who made those songs. It was TMS and his VOICE who made them hits. Hence Ilayaraaja decided to make songs, after that episode, without great voices (or voices to speak of) so that his music will be noticed".
Another modest gem from the same interview. "You know why I am still so popular. It is because of the new songs. Thanks to the new songs, people realise the value of TMS and his VOICE."
There are a few more, that I'll recollect in leisure ....

Hi,
TMS likes to blow his own trumpets and he is living with his glorious past. He is a non-entity now in TFM. IR did use him for some of his songs but this arrogant attitude of TMS caused his own downfall. If not for that, he would have continued for some more years. "Thaainaadu" MD was not IR. IMO, he was a great singer but 'nunalum than vaayal kedum' appadingira maadhiri thannoda vaayala kettaar. Interestingly, vaayaladhaan pugazheniyin uchikku vandhaar. Adhae vaaya thappa use panni dhaan ippa indha nilamaikku vandhirukkaar. But, I don't think he is the Kumar Sanu of yesteryears. He is much better than that. I heard that he once used to say that only because of him that Shivaji and MGR got fame. He is now saying the same about IR also. If IR's songs were hit only because TMS rendered it, how did IR's songs with SPB and others, become super hits, even better than the IR-TMS combo hits? TMS is arguing for the sake of it. C'mon guys!!! TMS is a non-entity in TFM now and his words about IR are worthless and is not going to affect IR in anyway. Then, why waste time? As Srinath said, his interview can only qualify for the 'dhjkl...' thread.

The idea of posting it here was because it was an interesting tid-bit. I don't think the grumblings of an old man qualify for any discussion whatsoever !!
Just thought makkal can have fun with these comments - the same way I had listening to TMS.
Having said that I recollect just one more comments on his "naan oru raasi illa raaja" - He says, "The MD for this song...what is his name?...the bearded guy who talks and walks like a female ?...yess..Rajender. He came to me to "teach" me how to sing this song!! I told him, please don't teach ME. I don't want to sing this song. But the director Ibrahim and Rajender convinced me that ONLY I should sing this song and that the words are for the actor, and that he should not feel disheartened by the sad, pessimistic lyrics of the song. But then, that song was the beginning of my end"
More later. I am not expecting any discussion on this topic. JOT (Just another tidbit)!!!!

I have been reading some callous, savage remarks about TMS with kinda retaliating attitude to square the remarks made by him which were basically inevitable, emotional outbursts as he could not withstand the rough treatment (in his own visions, why NOT!) by some upcoming MD's at that time. IMO, the pathetic fallacies dancing down the streets rejoicingly celeberating an abrupt end to his career certainly calls for a discontent. TMS was carrying a chip on his shoulder towards the end of his era, in spite of his innumerable vintage years in which he scaled sky high in fame though his sheer endurance of his voice. He could not assimilate a sudden death of his career by simply NOT giving in to the calls of the hour. His feelings were quite understandable and it is not uncommon for any artist of his calibre showing anguish over their inability(or stubbornness) to make themselves compatible to the changes. I cannot imagine about the lasting values of Sivaji and MGR songs without his golden voice, and he has every right to be proud about that. IMO, TFM was just lucky to have this right man at right time who engrossed one's imagination of these matinee idols deep in their mind. IMO, the end of his career is certainly not an occasion to be partied on.

Rameshb,
You are right saying one should not celebrate the end of TMS', or for that matter anyone's, career. But TMS is too proud of himself and passing remarks that put down other people's talents. I feel it is right on the part of IR fans to condemn TMS for this arrogant attitude. Do you mean to say that it is right on the part of TMS to say that his songs with IR were hits only because of him. Did IR have no part on the success of those songs? C'mon!!! This is not fair. TMS had a great voice, no doubt. But his arrogance is even greater. His part in the lasting values of Shivaji and MGR songs is significant, but that doesn't mean to say that his voice ALONE made them popular.
