Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."

Naaz,
no vaira nenjam was definitely Gheri Chaal.
saravanan,
are u sure about Sathurangam . I thought it was S-G .
R Sundar,
You echo my thoughts about songs from flop movies. In fact I started a thread about it but it just went down under the weight of ARR vs IR threads.

Vengayam, Neel D, Cinema Virumbi -
Thank you for setting my memory right! I greatly appreciate it.
RSundar - This thread has not only focused on the HITS it has also searched out, unearthed and framed many forgotten masterpieces. Welcome!

You did it! I knew this article of yours is worthy of publishing. I wonder why it took you so long! And thanks for providing hearty entertainment once again.

Naaz, that was a well written review (though extremely critical). Lot of people actually find the costumes and settings (your description of Paro running out from her house is hilarious) very "rich" when you have called it "fakery". Sounds very much like the state of TFM today. Simple and real golds like VJ ignored and flash and fanciness preferred instead. I hope to read your review of the latest big album release that everyone is talking about.
G.Ragavan, you have to look for specialty music shops in older areas of the town in the narrow alleys. You will find someone who actually knows "Deviyin Thirumanam", etc.
Ragapravaham Sundar, have you visited http://www.vanijayaram.com ? There are some rare songs there.

Does anyone know what movie this VJ solo is from? The words may not all be correct. This song did get a lot of AIR time around 79/80/81. But disappeared all of a sudden.

Neel D -
I really don't want VJ (or any singer of the same calibre) to be singing songs like "kitsu, kitsu" or "maya, maya" (although, having said that, at least the pronunciation of those pedestrian and juvenile lyrics would be stress-prefect, and native, if they had.) - it is an absolute insult to any thinking tamizh speaking individual. You really don't have to belong to any one CAMP to come to this conclusion.
But what can you do with a people who are only too eager to celebrate bad, meaningless nursery rhymes?
It wouldn't surprise me in the least if these songs become all the rage. It all began with Rukkumani Rukkumani - and has consistently regressed to this arivivuketta childishness.
How long before the Junta in Namagiripettai or Rayapettai walks around sucking pacifiers, I wonder. For that is where this is all headed.
Have not heard the song you mention above. Or maybe I have, but I can't immediately recall the tune.
Now I am really curious about this Sridevi Varam Kaetkiral song. I've never heard it, I don't think.

Naaz, here are the starting lines of "Sridevi...". May be this will ring a bell.

Naaz,
your review was very indulging!. Was the movie that bad? Because of Sharrukh " chimp" Khan I have given it a wide breadth. till they show it in star, zee or sony a year down the line as part of sivarathri celebs!!
Naaz & Neel D
I don't know if it is appropriate in this thread but I am curious. This is for you both. On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate both P S & VJ.You need not back up your marking with reasoning straight from the heart. I have my rating done & would like to just see yours!( And don't give me who are we to rate , they are like wine & water or whatever( wow! everthing starts withw w)

Naaz, your review was absolutely great!
Neel D, that 'Maanasaya pennasaya--' does ring a bell. Are the opening lines actually 'Mayakkama oru kalakkama'? I am trying hard to recollect--
Vengayam, I too admire PS a lot and love many of her songs. Yes she did have a great voice. I only feel that no one should absolutely monopolise the field at any given time- Live and let live! I am all for variety. Was it fair to send so many talented singers packing? Many say that the 60s was a 'Golden Period' for tfm, but I feel the gold would have glittered more, had there been more variety. This are my feelings and I don't intend to hurt any PS fan in this context. I totally agree that she was a fabulous singer.
G Ragavan, how well I understand your feelings when the your search for a particular song has been in vain! I have gone deep into remote pockets of Tamizhnadu searching for so many songs! Luckily, my work took me to many places (I was doing my articleship for C.A.at that time).
I found 'Sridevi varam ketkiraal' (and some other rare songs) in a small shop in a seaside village called Thondi. I have got some other elusive songs from a shop in Virudunagar. Some from Pondicherry, some from Bhavani (near Erode), some from Coimbatore, some from Salem--! In fact, I used to spend all my stipend(which by itself was meagre) on this pursuit!
My conclusion is- even songs from the 50s are easier to obtain, but the 70s seem elusive. Even on TV, either you get to see the new songs, or old songs from the 50s and 60s. It is as though the 70s never happened!
But the 70s did happen, and it was a period of predominantly Black & whites, Bell-bottoms AND Bewitching songs! It was a period of transition, a period of variety and a period of discovery- discovery of new talent and re-discovery of old, hitherto ignored talent--For me the 70s will forever remain the best period in tfm.
But now that I am out of India, I have to be satisfied with what I have managed to collect so far.

Saravanan, your comments are fair enough. i was getting worried that you wer sort of attaching sinister motives & conspiracy theory (a la kevin costner) to other singers getting sidelined. Becausenorth of the Vindyas it happened that way when lata finished the career of many a singer... not sparing even Asha. PS is too good a person to indulge in that sort of thing. yes the more the merrier, but I can't find any song sung by PS in the period which could have been equalled by other singers.
At the cost of digression, because you speak of variety how do you dig Dharapuram Sunderrajan's voice. His was a different voice that just went -almost unnoticed.

Vengayam-
Yes, Dharapuram's voice was distinct- but he was not lucky. Tfm was a TMS fortress at that time.
Nevertheless, Dharapuram stood out in songs like 'Enakkaga vaa'- Selvam,'Ayyanaru neranja vaazhvu'- Kaaval Deivam and 'Azhagu ratham porakkum- Karpooram.

Thanks for the feedback on the review. I am so happy that I could let it rip...and let you laugh!
Vengayam - My piece was more of an indictment than an indulgence. I think the latter is what the movie is (vaccuously) ALL about! Waiting for it to happen on ZeeTV or Oh Jee TV! is a good idea. Catch up on you sleep, and save yourself a lot of heartburn. Trust me no this (even though I am not a doctor! :-)
Saravanan - Thanks for finding is "absolutely great." It was written in a moment of blinding rage, but I guess the humour of the piece also shone through.
You are right, 70s songs, not just in TFM, but also in HFM - that was the golden period of so many gifted singers and MDs. I think this archival vaccuum is a deliberate exercise by some TFM or AIR malcontent. Repeat: Everything is Political! :-)
Neel D -
Innum theriyalaiye...You just have to upload the song now, even it is not top-notch quality. This song is pirandufying...I sat up going through my VJ collection for 3 hours last night, trying to locate that number. But I was right all along - I don't have that track at all.

vengaayam,
I stopped playing the comparison game a long time ago. PS and VJ are both legends. I will leave it at that.
Saravanan,
70s is the decade when no MD or no singer(s) monopolized the industry. As a result there was variety, competition and quality. Also experimentation. It is hard to guess what caused the current state of 70s songs.
Naaz, check my website tonight.
