Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Saravanan / bb -
Thanks for this vintage... full-bodied and crisp, with subtle hints of rosehips, citrus and perfumed longing. A winner from Chateau Vani Jairam! :-)
The influence of OP Nayyar pervades this song (VJ sang for him for a few Hindi assignments) and SG have faithfully rendered it in its tamizh-mann totality.
If you have the time, please listen to ABs song "Jayiye Aap Kahan Jayenge, Yeh Nazar Lautke Phir Aayegee..." (Was it from Kashmir Ki Kali...)
And then listen to Muthu Muthu Thaerottam -
The similarities are plentiful.
AB/OPN - VJ/SG - Some collaborations leave such a delicious aftertaste. A song like this can only leave you craving for more...
And I can listen to it again and again this weekend! Thanks bb!

Thanks for the choice bb. Naaz, you are right, the O.P.Nayyar rhythm can be noticed. That AB song is from "Mere Sanam" and it is one of my all time favourites too.

Saravanan/Naaz, good comments. Saravanan, looks like this was one of the few movies that didn't have Sivakumar with 2 heroines :)

Vijay -
Thank you for the Mere Sanam pointer. The AB/OPN songs overlap and blur...and the name of the film somehow becomes insignificant...But in the name of accuracy - thanks again!
ABs songs for OPN were Offerings to Tingle!
Aage Bhi Jaane Na Thu
Isharon Isharon Mein
And then this one - a classic - from Pran Jaaye Par Vachan Na Jaye -
Chain Se Hum Ko Kabhie
Aap Ne Jeene Na Diya
Zehr Bhi Chaha Agar
Peena Tho Peene Na Diya...
(I'll stop here before I get swept away on flood of fleeting memories...)
A similar tune by MSV - sung by VJ again - appeared in Shankar Salim Simon:
Idhu Undhan Veetu Kili Thaan...
(Interesting footnote: VJs (to date) last song for a tamil film was once again for Thirupur Mani and Vivekananda Pictures...A grossly overlooked Mohanam (?) by ARR - Edhu Sugam Sugam Adhu Vaendum Vaendum - from Vandichcholai Sinnarasu)

Naaz, its a coincidence that you should mention these. I have been listening to both the songs that you mentioned repeatedly the last few days. AB at her expressive best. An equivalent song to today's SOTD in terms of the strong tune/expressive singing/feelings it conveys, would be "Vaa Ponmayile" from Poonthalir.
"Yaaradhu sollamal" by VJ is a winner too. It was SOTD before.

A tape of Asha/Rafi for OPN is always in my car...and I listen to these duets even when the car beside me in the traffic is blaring nondescript hip-hop.
Asha Bhonsle's voice is (to this day) a velvet kiss of desire...Of which Dreams are Made of -nnu sollalam!
SG and VJ worked on many a good song together:
Aaniver, Nenjamellam Neeye, Neeya, Vandichchakaram, Maanthopu Kili, Chinna Chinna Veedu Katti, Kannodu Kann, Darling Darling, Palavanach Cholai, Kalyana Kalam, Inikkum Ilamai, Ennadi Meenatchi, Theerpugal Thiruththappadalam, Pournami Alaigal, Rowdi Rakkamma, Jothi Malar,...
In fact, in the 80s SG and CB were perhaps the only TFM composers who made fine use of VJs voice. IR had his moments too - but not as consistent as the above two. Bless them, is all I can say.
If Muthu Muthu Thaerottam is not an example of honed artistry, I don't know what is. (Going by the responses today for this SOTD, I guess the case is heavily in favour of discerning listeners - so far all of three :-)

bb,
Thanks for the great Vani Jayaram number from AaNi Vaer. Yet another gem from the VJ & Shankar-Ganesh combo. Melodies like this are hard to find these days.

My sister's fav song.Major credit goes to VJ for her superb rendering and to some extent SG for their strong melody. Is it in Mohanam???This song reminds me of another song in Nellikani which I think is a duet with VJ/MV

Mythila- are you referring to 'Paadu thendrale pudhu sugam vandhadhu' (JC?/VJ)? It is another great song by S-G.

yeah, u got it Sara. So it was JC and not MV.
Does anybody remember some poppish songs sung by SPB ? like
1. Kaalam ponnaanadhu - toing toing toing ...... guitar strum in Kalyaanamaam kalyaanam
2. Ninaithu parkiren...... en nenjam inikinradhu
sirithu parkiren en jeevan thudikinrathu......
Remember my sweet heart
Oh.Oh...Remember.................... with SPB's charactistic yoddling of his golden voice which sent the entire fairer sex into a tizzy high!!!

Mythila, the charanam portions of this song, the opening lines, might remind you of "Malligai en mannan mayangum" another equally enchanting number. Compare "nenja vaanathil iravu nerathil" with "Malligai en mannan mayangum". Not quite the same but close. But the rhythm is similiar. Muthu Muthu therottam seems to take notes of Karaharapriya (the feel is more Abherish, which is derived from karaharapriya) in the charanam and has shades of GowriManohari(Ni3) in the pallavi. The tune is wonderful to say the least.

The consistency - tonal and metric - of the word "Ennai" in this song is a revelation.
VJs other song (among many) for MSV comes to mind:
Ammamma Asai Pogum Vegam
Engengo Ennai (the same Ennai in MuthuMuthu - like a reprint, wherever it appears) Kondu Pogum
Eppodhum Kamam Enbadhey Sorgabogham
Thaer Kondu Vaa Pogalam...
from Kupaththu Raja, I believe. The first song in the solos section of the VJ website. The lyrics by Kannadasan have the wow-factor as usual. Check it out if you want sound "proof" :-)

Song of the Day: naan Erikkarai mElirundhu from chinnath thaayi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/naanerikkarai.rm
- MD: IR. Sung by KJY and Swarnalatha.
- Somehow, I just love Swarnalatha's voice in this song. She raises the song from an average level to a unique position with her rendition. Especially, her introduction in this song follows a rough female voice at the end of the first minute.
- Can anyone identify the chorus singers in this song?
- The film, Chinna thaayi, was a different and a bold attempt. The other song in this film, "kOttaiyai vittu vEttaikku sellum" is also a good number. The film deals with a girl who is an illegitimate child, who grows up and falls pregnant in a secret affair much like her mother. Ther performances in this movie were good, and the film was a sleeper hit, if i remember correctly.

bb, an excellent 90"s Raja song. There was a beautiful P.Suseele solo, too. yes the movie itself was a decent hit and I remember spawned off another movie from the same combo(director-IR-hero) called mamiyaar veedu or something. I saw the movie and I agree it was a different and bold attempt.
On a different note, I wouldnt write off post-90 Raja , or even post-92,as my good friend Srinath is wont to. There are several wholesome albums in the phase..though maybe several inane ones as well. Pattu paada vaa( a gem), mahanadhi, yatramozhi, bharathi and ofcourse Guru are the immediate ones that spring to mind. IMO, it is blasphemy to compare these infavourably to even his 70's and 80's stuff.
BB, while I appreciate this is a sort of attempt to honour the unsung musicians, it is nice that once in a while you bring to light some of the giants' less appreciated stuff. Many of the songs of lesser known musicians are revelations. Muthu muthu therottam easily replaces my previous s-g favurite, paniyum neeye, malarum naane.
While on that, may I point out that it is an age since that behemoth MSV has appeared in this page? I would suggest some of his lesser known gems, or even hits-but-forgotten ones. Vaan nilaa nilaa alla for a starter?

bb,
Thanks for this great song - I somehow feel your description (or praise :-) abt Swarnalatha actually fits to the 'chorous' team as well ... NOM :-D
