  Hello Friends,
  I am Pranav from Bangalore. This is really a good topic.
  1. Both Janaki and Asha have good voices.
  2. Asha concentrated in HFM where as Janaki concentrated in South Indian MUsic
  3. Asha is famous for her Nashili songs. BUt Janaki is famous for all sort of songs - like children songs, Duets, solo, pathos, vamp songs etc.
  4. Her song Singara Velane Deva .. is really an example for her talent .
  5. No singer in India can compete her in HIGH PITCH Songs.
  6. Asha and Janaki's voices are little bit similar to each other. If u hear to Shenbagame song from Enga Ooru Paatkaran or a song in Iruvar , u can identify that.
  7. Janaki has sung variety of songs, but Asha was branded only for Vamp or Nashili songs(LRE in TFM), coz, Lata has monopolised HFm at that time.
  8. I am not saying that Asha is a bad singer, she even sings beter than her sister,but she was unlucky.
  9. One guy has told that, even Lata and Asha have sung like a child, may be, but the effect in the voice is important.
  10. Senthoora Poove is really good
  11. But romantic numbers by Asha are less, I agree her songs for Helen were huge hits, But most of all the songs of janaki were hits
  If u hear Azaghu Malar Ada, from Vaidehi Kaathirundhal , u will understand. Such a SUPERB RENDITION.. U will definitely get tears in ur eyes. She will sing all songs with full expressions.
  U know onething, SJanaki has never gone to school, but stil she has lernt Kann, Tamil, Telugu , to read and write. She has sung songs even in German, Sinhalese..
  And also one thing, the way she sings is very impressive. Many singers dance or over act in stage shows or while recording, but Janaki is well dignified and she simply stands and sings. She is the role model for all the singers who mis behave on stage.
  Sorry , I think I had gone a bit out of Topic.
  
  One thing I can say, Janaki is the best female singer in India. Northies may call Lata as Nightingale of India, but they all know that Janaki is also talented as Lata.
  She is really cheated from Indian govt from so many prestigous awards like Dada SAheb award, Padmashree...
  I say that, no no I declare that .
  Janaki is more versatile than Asha and she is the BEST Singer of India.

  i spoke to s.janaki last week.she is doing fine
  
  about the website.i asked her abut the website.she told me that she didn't know much about that.
  
  so why don't we create a nice website for her.(any interested webdesign-experienced guys are welcome)
  
  all other fans can contribute like--song list ..and stuff like that.
  
  i don't know.it is just a begining.

  Pranav,
  Something more than bad luck was involved. Despite her imminent class, Aasha either did not want herself to get into mainstam movies' music, or that great music directors like LakshmiKaant-PyareLaal did not deem her fit to sing in important films and songs. That's why she is completely absent from the great tragical songs of the early 80s and late 70s.

  I am in Bangalore, but my parents are Tamil so I am both Kannada and Tamil.
  I have heard Kannada songs of S.Janaki.
  She was the Queen of Kannada Film Music for more than 40 years.
  Even last year she had sung in one film and she has sung all the songs in a recent movie(yet to release) ; its a children movie.
  I have never seen a female singer going to high pitches without straining her voice.
  If you hear " Gaganavu Yello" from Gejje Pooje, u will understand.Ammo, I was really astonished , when i heard that song for the first time.
  She is the Melody Queen of KFM and TFM. I don't know about MFM and Telugu FM.
  And regarding Asha getting chance in HFM, I think there will be only one simple reason - Monopolisation of LAta, she wantedly supressed all the other female singers. Only MDs like
  OP Nayyar , SD Burman, RD Burman gave her good chances .

  Janaki is truly a fantastic singer. I agree with all the superlatives you have showered on her.
  
  Even in a film like ShankarabharaNam, where the main voice used was that of VJ, Janaki has held her own with the simply superb Samajavaragamana and the litling Omkaarnaadhaanu. In fact, Janaki's voice suited the child far better than VJs in that movie. I am specifically referring to the sargam passages sung by Janaki and SPB (sa re ga re ga pa dha pa, ...) where SPB is trying to teach Janaki. Janaki's voice can mould itself for a child's voice very easily. It is sad that she got her due in TFM very very late!
  
  In Malayalam, one of my favourites of Janaki is "sandhye". I have a soft corner for Salilda, for one and Janaki literally makes gold more golden.

  BTW, was Saptapadhi released after Sankarabharanam. I have fallen in love with the songs of that movie. I can never forget her renditions in Salangai Oli, and her song "om namahsivaye..". Perfect in every note. And of course her great Annakilli and Kavikkuyil songs. Janaki seems to put in something extra while singing for Ilayaraaja, probably because she got her long due recognition first only from him (in TFM)?
  
  For romantic songs by Asha, check out her songs with Madan Mohan. A very good combo which produced many hits. She has sung great many duets for Madan Mohan like "zameen se hamein assmaan par" (adalat), and also some very charming ghazals like "jaane kya haal ho kal sheeshe ka paimaane kaa". Also see the songs she sang for Roshan, example "nigaahein milaane ko jee chaahtaa hai" or "hum intezaar karenge teraa qayaamat tak..". Another music director who used her voice very well was Jaidev and again Khayyaam too. These music directors have had more diverse associations with Asha than RDB or OPN. Jaidev gave Asha the song "maang mein bhar le rang sakhi ri" in "mujhhe jeene do" besides one delightful song after the other. Life is not worth living if one hasnt heard that song (admittedly a hyperbole, but you get the point :-)).

  Pranav, I have all most all Kannada songs of SJ. Gaganavu yello is one of my fav. song. And I love all the songs of her under GKV, Rajan-Nagendra, Vijayabhaskar and Upendrakumar, especially duets with SPB.

  Not only high pitch songs, even low pitch songs like - "Poojisalendhe Hoogala tandhe" or "Moodala maneya" are really good. Expecially the second song is realy very melodious.

  I din't say that Asha has nevr sung romantic numbers. But the chance she got was less. She has a good voice when compared to LAtaji.
  Her songs in Umrao Jaan are really superb. One of her Tamil songs - Shenbagame is really good. But she lacks expression. Lata is better and janaki is the best in giving expressions. The song may be of any kind - solo(happiness), duet, solo pathos, cabret songs, horny songs, devotional songs - she is the best in emoting the right feeling.
