  Hi,
  What is the raga of the song - "nenacchapadi nenacchapadi " from KAdalar dinam ?

  The 'Raga list' has peN ondru kandEn as Brindavana Saranga. Veena Gayathri's cassette has the same song listed under the raga of Brindavani. Aren't these two ragas different?

  Gopal,
  I think the song in HFM Chappa Chappa Charkha Chale from Maachis is in Vakulabharanam
  Lalgudi Jayaraman in an interview told that one of the pieces in Yanni live at the Taj was in Vakulabharanam.

  I remember seeing one instrumental in vakulabharanam by LSubramaniam, dunno the composition. Balamuralikrishna (Raganga Ravali cassette by Sangeetha) & Kotiswara Iyer have composed in all melakarthas so there should be definitely one by them.

  Is Vakulabaranam a Melakartha? Is there any famous janya/ derivative of this raagam.
  
  I heard a RTP in Vakulabaranam by Mandolin U.Srinivas last weekend at Lincoln Cneter,Broadway,NYC . That's when I first ever heard of this raagam ..
  
  Anyway, it's an excellent raagam..
  
  Sounded more like arabic tunes to me (you know like the Hey! Shabba Hey! Shabba types - Arjun song, can't recollect the movie )

  Gopal, Vakulabaranam is a Melakartha. The only difference between MayamalvaGoula and VKB is Ni,MMG has N3 whereas VKB has N2. 'Naam oruvarai oruvar santhippom yena kaathal devathai sonnaaL' from Kumari kottam is predominantly in VKB (Based on the original scale of the song, the song starts with Pa). This song has some Islamic touch to it as you mentioned.The stanzas of Poomudippaal are definitely in VKB.
  
  Another one of the unsolved mysteries, what raag are the following songs based on ?
  Naalaam Naalaam thirunaalaam
  Manaivi amaivathellaam
  Lilly malarukku kondaattam. Ragaesri ? Experts please confirm. I was told that Subbudu praised the raaga usage in Naalam Naalam.

  USrinivas is likely getting into rare ragas! I recently heard a composition in Sucharitra (MK 67 I think) which was just wonderful. (BMG crescendo cassettes).

  Vasu: I've heard U Srinivas playing 'Neethimati'. He has also played ragavardhini in Ilayaraja's classics.

  If naalaam is tilang , then 'manaivi...' also tilang.MSV lots of tilang usage, raagas MDs have as their base favorite are very intresting. IR have kalyani, mohanam, keeravani, mmgoula,sindhubhairavi etc. MSV have tilang, Hamir kalyani, Kambhoji family, Karakarapriya and family ,sindhu bhairavi ,desh, kapi etc .
  
  
  Please give me raaga for 'Mullaippooppole rendu mookkuththi minnuthadi' by TMS and ?. Pallavi sound like start flute piece in 'Mohe panghat pe nandlala chched gayo re' by naushad ali. 'Mohe.' is in Gaara, close to kapi.

  Vasu, cannot be Kalyani, if you notice, the pallavi itself touches subsequent notes, Unnidam mayangugiren. To me, it is cinema ragam.

  Vasu, yeah.. I meant R1R2.Nevertheless, a super composition by VK. Starting the charanam without the appropriate chords/instruments to prompt you could be a tricky affair. Other songs with similar features Thedinen vanthathu, Odum ENNangaLe.
  I am interested in knowing the arohanam/avarohanam for Ragaesri. Thx in advance.
