I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

kik, there is one more good song by VJ in "Meenatchi Thiruvillaiyadal".

GR - I am drawing a blank at the moment. If I have a definite and confirmed answer, I'll post it. Hopefully, so others in this thread might pipe up by then. That Aana Kaana is, as Neel said, a good song to define who is a singer and who isn't. Minimum accompaniment, the voice the predominant musical instrument, the scale and felicity the true test of perfection.

Do anyone have songs from "Muperundtheviyar"? There are three good VJ songs in that movie. MD is MSV.
1. Competition song between Nambiyar and Sujatha (saraswathy). Nambiyar sings "Naan Arivil Aathavan". VJ sings back "Aam. Nee Arivillaathavan".
2. Duet with KJY or PJ.
3. Moonru Deivam endthan veetil pillai aanaro (lullaby song)
I enquired in the recording shops I know. No hope. :-)
Can anyone get those songs?

Talking about Sujatha, did VJ sing any song for the movie "nAyakkar magaL"?

Neel D, thanks for Geetham Vandhadhu...Nicely done!

Naaz:
(1) Who is accompanying Vani in the "deeivaga malar" song? Who is the MD and what is the film's name.
Ditto for "aana kana" and the "vaaranam" songs?
(2) I sent the email again.

Kik : Thanks for the songs. Excellent collection!!
(AVR: Looks like Chitra is accompanying VJ in the deiviga song. I may be wrong because I am not sure if Chitra started singing then!. BTW, When did the movie come out?)

I don't remember the movie name of the Vaaranam song. It has Devi or Deiva in the name. (Deiva thirumangal or Devi something!!). Sridevi, Thiyagarajan and Rajesh had acted in the movie. (Thiyagarajan supposedly carves Devi's sculpture incl. her mole blah..blah..Rajesh suspects her etc...)

The 3 mugam song is "aasayulla Rosakkara mama" with Radhika on screen.
I vaguely remember VJ- MSV fight described in Kumudam.(Quote .. Satru neram kazhithu Visumbal Satham kettathu..) Any idea?
The "Billa" duet with MV and "Thee" duet with PJC and the solo in "Savaal" - Any comments?

Priya ,
The movie you are talking about is "Deviyin Thiruvilayadalgal ". .the film has some really tailor made Amman/devi scenarios and *ed (WHO ELSE )KR Vijaya and a host of other "Gunacchitra" stars.

OISG - Can't help with the Kumudam bit. AFAIK, VJ has always maintained that MSV was someone for whom she would even do a "humming" without any qualms (eg. Abinaya Sundari from Mridanga Chakravarthi.)
Some tunes are wasted on mediocre picturisation (one of my favorite tunes Rasave Unna Naan Yenniththaan from Thanikkaatu Raja - such an haunting melody - completely destroyed in unimaginative picturisation.)
Did you find the singing to be shoddy in the Aasaiyulla song or was it that it did not jell on the screen? VJ has done quite a few numbers that have been picturised on Radhika.
Iravum Pagallum Yennakku Un Mel Kannottam from Billa is a good tune. So is Naadinaen from Savaal. The singing was on par. That's my take. What was the song from Thee - I can't recall the tune rightaway...I'd like to hear your views.
- From: Priya (@ 198.23.26.253)
on: Wed Apr 10 15:10:34 EDT 2002
Naaz,
the song from Thee is "Ayaivukku manas irrukku..Ammmavukku vayas irrukku...Arambam agindradhu..ishkku..ishkku..ishkku..
- From: Priya (@ 198.23.26.253)
on: Wed Apr 10 15:12:18 EDT 2002
Is'nt there also the VJ song "Naan thaanae oru pudhu kavidhai..en ennangal naan enniya vannangal.." in Savaal?
- From: Priya (@ 198.23.26.253)
on: Wed Apr 10 15:14:20 EDT 2002
Speaking of the savaal song, I remember this other solo of VJ:
Srilanka chinna rani
vaa ranga vanna meni vaa
Yazhpaanam azhagai nee kaanum...
I think this was in Pilot Premnath. Am not sure..
- From: Naaz (@ 24.76.127.63)
on: Wed Apr 10 16:24:28 EDT 2002
Priya, thanks for the Thee song. I don't remember the other two from Sawaal and Pilot Premnath. Neel or Kik might have a better idea.

The MD for all the songs I posted is MSV - sri kanchi kaamaakshi, meenatchi thiruvilayaadal, navagraha naayaki.
GR: I'll post the other MT song later - I still have NN songs to post. I'll also post the mupperuntheviar, deiva thirumanaangal, baala naagamma, nayakkar magal (if it has any VJ) songs but this will take a while. These are on videotape and it's painful to move from there to audio to mp3.
Humko man ki shakthi dena is from Guddi (MD: Vasant Desai). This is a prayer song. The more popular song is bole re papiharaa.
Naaz: VJ actually has hummed for MSV. There is a song in NN that I haven't posted yet (santhana kudam onru sathiraaduthu) where VJ's portion is to hum most of the time and repeat the pallavi once at the end.
AVR/Priya: Have you not been following this thread or did you just ignore my (all important, informative, incredibly coherent:-) posts:-) The "vaaranam song" is from NN as I mentioned before. You will also find the movie ids for the other songs if you scroll back through old responses.
Those who have some knowledge of tamil literature/religion will recognize this to be from Andaal's Natchiyaar thirumozhi. It is usually sung at Iyengaar weddings as well.
Incidentally, this song has probably been set to music the most often in TFM - GR (thookku thookki), MSV (NN), KVM (thirumaal perumai, I think), IR (twice: annakkili & keladi kanmani. Not sure if the annakili version was in the film. I have it on the tape).

Kik, u have all those songs. Great. I can wait for some more time. NN also has good songs like "Chandanak kudam onru Chathuraduthu".
"Deiveeha Malarallava" song is from "Meenatchi Thiruvillaiyadal". It is a lullaby by lakshmi and saraswathy for infant meenatchi. I too felt the other singer could be Chitra. Chitra become popular at that time.
"Deivath thirumanangkal" - kik, I want all the songs from the movie (please). But "Mangkai Than Kai Malarkai" song is ultimate. Three MDs, Three directors for that movie.
Do anyone remember Melmaruvathoor aathiparasakthi songs. There are two very good VJ solos (obviously those are devotional ones).

Kali Magamayi Adhi Parameswariye... - from Melmaruvathoor Mariyamma - picturised on Nalini, I think. I can't recall the second song from that film right now, GR. Vandha, sollraen!

Hi Priya, I am still looking for the clipping of my interview with VJ - I have found my typewritten draft (which was the final version, after editorial input) that made it to print. But the clipping is still eluding me. I will keep looking. Ironically, I have all the other clippings of my journalistic work (including photocopies!!) but the VJ piece has become a mystery...If I am unable to locate the same, I could type the full draft of the interview for you...It is about half a page of newsprint!. However, I have found all the research material I used for my questions (including national reviews of her songs,) and I can type those for forum members here. BTW my interview with VJ was published mid-1989 in the Indian Express. I wonder if the have archives going that far back on the net??
Let me know if you guys would like snippets from the Meera, Shankarabharam reviews in the national papers (reviewed by other eminent critics.)
And I hope the original clipping of my VJ piece shows up...

AVR - You've always asked if VJ has presented a "pure" classical/semmi-classical concert (non-film). I have two review snippets, which I am posting to give you (aap ke anurodh pe) an idea how her C/S-C concert was received by critics. The concert was at the Madras Music Academy, in January 1981. I just unearthed my research file today!
Here we go:
"Whether it was the bhajan, the thumri, a ghazal or a Marathi abhang she was perfectly at ease. Everything was authentic in diction and music. It was difficult to believe that a voice could possess such a wide range. The audience sat on edge when she traversed and reached the end of the fourth octave in the madhyama shruthi and heaved a sigh of relief when she confidently and competently came back to the base."
Subbudu, Indian Express, 2 January 1981, Madras.
"The melodies offered int hese languages opened with one in the evocative Sivaranjani after which the music covered Bimplas, Charukesi, Misra Khamaj, Maund varieties, Kiravani etc. The intoxicating voice of Vani with its soaring quality and spontaneous felicity made all these extremely captivating to the ear, and an abhang of Namdev was particularly enjoyable."
NMN, Music Critic, The Hindu, 24 April 1981, Madras.

AVR and others - Let me know if you want me to type the review snippets of Meera, Shankarabharanam and other Live Concerts...I don't want to assume that there is an interest in these - but I am happy to provide them if you want me to. Thanks.
