The Legends (MSV-TKR songs) cassetee release by HMV

I got a 5 pack cassette from HMV recently from India.There are 74 songs in the pack and each song has a short introduction by MSV. TKR has a speech in the very beginning of cassette 1. MSV provides very nice insights into some of the songs.


I will try to post as many interesting intros as possible in this thread.

  SK, just a couple of weeks ago I was talking to Srikanth about how G Ramanathan first in 1960 and then IR in the mid-eighties had used the metre of the Mahadevi hit (1957) lullaby, 'Singara....'. Coincidence!!
  
  RV, 'Senthamizh thEn mozhiyaaL' has the opening line set to the same metre as 'Hue hum jinkE liyE barbaad' from Aan, sung by Rafi and the similarity ends there.

  MSV-TKR have copied the basic tune (beat?) and changed the orchestration. KD made them do this even though a dubbed version of aan was released earlier in tamil and this song's tamil version became very popular.
  
  Incidentally, anyone know what happened to the re-release/new version of the soundtrack of akbar (mughal-e-azam) that was to be released?

  There is one bad thing about this collection. Seerkazhi is not well represented. I get a feeling that PBS is the favorite singer of MSV!
  
  The underutilization of Seerkazhi is a major error on the part of MSV!

  The underutilization of Seerkazhi is a major error on the part of MSV!..
  
  I don't think so. I think Seerkazhi's voice was only
  suited to certain types of songs.. for which he was,
  in fact used well by MSV. His voice also didn't
  fit well for any major actor.

  MSV and TKK belonged to the era of MGR and Sivaji, where Gemini and SSR filled in, i.e. the 60s. TMS had already established himself as the playback singer for MGR and Sivaji early in that decade as his voice suited both of them and gave the illusion that the songs were actually sung by them. TMS's voice also suited SSR. Gemini of course was amply supported by AM Rajah and PBS.Under such circumstances it was no wonder that Sirgazhi evolved as the specialist singer for background songs.

  Matrapadi, "Naan Naattai Thiruthapporein, Antha Kottaiyai Pidikkapporein", "Soan Pappadi, Sonaa Pappadi, Paarthaal Eppadi, Saappittal Ippadi, Kannipponnin Vaayilvarum Thenaippola Inikkuthu" yenra vegu sumaaraana paadalgal anthappadathil iruppathu Unmai. Just wanted to clarify.

  Aamaam, romba naalaachu. Ungalaiyum romba naala kaanoamey! I don't see any motivation to bring myself here as often as we all used to do. Yaaraavathu young TFMDFers paarthaal, "Intha old timersukku vera velaiyey kidaiyaathu, pazhankathai pesurathey velai" enbaargal. I certainly understand their sentiments too, but, we know how this forum used to be.

  Yes, Keerthi, the duet I was thinking about was "Ponnukkenna Azhaghu, Poovukkenna Perumai". Is that song by TMS, SJ or TMS, PS? When I think of the humming, I get reminded of SJ, but when I think of "Oru porul marai porul, ivalukku ilakkiyamey" line, I get reminded of PS? or is it VJ?
  Yes, the other song, "Neengal Athanaipperum Uthamarthaanaa, Sollungal?" is a great song.

  Family & Friends are fine. Even though I visit India once in 2 years and for 8 weeks, I never could feel satisfied. As soon as I came back, I am counting down to our next trip in 2 years. That's life. Where are you now, in India or in Singapore?
  
  Have I mentioned before, ennudaiya wedding receptionukku, Katcheri pannikkoduthathu, MSV, LRE, et. al. Antha alavu, MSV meethu yenakku oru mariyaathai - JFYI.

  I was watching Naadoadi (MGR/Saroja Devi) last night.
  Getting LRE to sing Androaru naal athe nilavil was a royal waste by MSV. Fortunately there is a repeat of the same song, this time by TMS & PS, partly salvaging the song. :-)
  
  (BTW, unlike other MGR movies, this movie was a good, meaning worthwhile, watch. Good songs too.)

  Unlike most MGR movies, there was a concrete story. I attributed it to Banthulu actually. :-)
