Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Veesiyadhu....Neel D!
Thanks for another memorable and fragrant number! I could listen to MSV-IR songs from 70s thru 90s and blissfully ignore everything else that passes for "MUSIC(K?)" these days.
I have not heard the telegu devotional album which you have uploaded on the site. Shall sample it this weekend and share my thoughts with you.
Thanks for the quick response with "Poomele...".
I am sure it - and other songs on your site - are bringing happiness to many hearts around the world.
That is such rewarding service!
Priya: I have not heard the duet you mention. Do you have any idea about the song I mentioned - "Pulanguzhal Isai (Mozhi??) tamizh tamizh tamizh yena...." ? I appreciate any small lead, clue, scrap....help!

Aahaa!! Telugu devotional songs by vanijairam...thanks for this gift to us, Neel D....I have listened to some of them...shall write my opinion about it when I listen to all them.
One question: Is there any plan in the future to add a page for VJ's telugu movie songs?...esp. the songs she recorded with MSV, KVM, Rajan-Nagendra and IR in telugu are unforgettable.
Thanks again.

Naaz, Priya, Kaumudi, you are very welcome.
Naaz, pullAngkuzal mozi is from Urum uRavum (with Sivaji and KRVijaya, I think). antha mozium ungaLaiththEdi viraivil varum.
Kaumudi, I don't have a big collection of Telugu songs, but I will be uploading whatever I have.

Neel D -
I just sampled a few quick tracks from Gaanamanjari. When was the album released? Any idea who the composer is?
"Vaade Venkatadri..." If a song like that had been in a film, it would have walked away with a national award (among others) without contest. An absolute standout.
(Thanks for the mozhi detail and hint.)

I believe it is from 1989.

Neel D,
Some suggestions, if you dont mind.
You seem to have missed 'en uLLil engo' from rOsAppoo ravikkaikaari and some frivolous ones like 'va va pakkam va' from Thangamagan, 'vaadagai veedithu' from Paadaatha theneekkaL. Then the beautiful 'malarey, malarey mounamaa' (MD Usha Mangheshkar) from some Sathyaraj picture.

Naaz, NeelD is right, the song you had mentioned is indeed from Oorum Uravum. Sivaji & KRV. MD-SG.
This is among the rare occasions when SG rose above their usual mediocrity and gave a gentle melody, with spellbinding violin interludes.
SPB starts off with Pullankuzham mozhi thamizh thamish thamizh ena, poovai idhazh muthu chimizh chimizh chimizh ena, vandaal kavadi chindhaal.
VJ follows with Kannangkaru mugil kuzhal kuzhal kuzhal ena, kaadhal mugam madhi nizhal nizhal nizhal ena, sonnan kaviya kannaan.
Truly among SG's best efforts!
NeelD, thanks for the solo page 2. Excellent choice.
Naaz, NeelD, while I do like the Police number from Needhipathi, have you heard Oru devathai vandhaal(SPB-VJ) from the same film? Its a great song, though I don't think it was there in the film.
Priya, the song 'Sangeetham ragangal illamala' (SPB-VJ) is from Moham 30 Varusham. Nice song by VB.

Thank you for your detailed and informative response. Greatly appreciated.
S-G, though often dismissed as composers of a lower order (in part due to their seemingly casual attitude towards their calling, and also compounded by their irrepressible attraction for others' tunes now and again,) did demonstrate perseverance and a good sense of parody. It was a career with scatterings of brlilliance, and periods of compositional indistinguishability.
Even though most of their output didn't propel one out of the seat in applause, their numbers, when they worked, left one with a general sense of rapture and goodness. And there a lot to be said for that.
Yes, I have heard the duet from Needhipathi. You are right, it did not make the film. It would have been nice had the Nandhaa song made the soundtrack album, although it was also chopped in the final edit.
Sugrutha - Usha Mangeshkar as MD for a tamizh film? That's news!

Sugrutha/Naaz,
The Sathyaraj film is Dharmam(1986)- I think a Devar/Dandayudhapani films production. Co-starring Saritha and Sudha Chandran. BTW, I think the MD was Usha Khanna and not Usha Mangeshkar. Also, I don't seem to recall a VJ song in it, though there were 2 SJ solos.

Saravanan,
Thanks. Yes. It was Khanna. It is a background song with Sarita and Sathyaraj making a getaway and Sarita is falling in love with the hero. It was the only song that caught my attention.

Hi Neels,
Thank you very much for the mp3 songs. It is fantastic collection of Vani's songs.
I love the song, "Ninaipadhu Niraiverum Nee Irundhal Ennodu.. Nadappadhu Nalamagum Nan Irundal Unnodu...." It still plays in my mind.
Thank you very much again.

The same Sugrutha? Welcome back. I did not forget those songs. I will be uploading them eventually. I don't have the Usha K song though.
Saravanan, you are up there with Mano(M) the mobile songs database.
Venky, you are very welcome.

Saravanan, I also figured the "Ushas" were interchanged. Even so, Usha Khanna scoring a tamizh film, that's still news to me. Were the songs popular? Are there any samples on the net?
Two good solos by VJ that did not get enough air-time as the films disappeared without a trace:
"Idhuvarai Sivaraathiri" from Aadugal Nanaiginrana
"Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswathi, Neengal Kulitha Moondru Nadhi..." from Deiviga Nadhigal, Punidha Nadhigal (about 3 sisters - evidently - named after holy rivers) or something along those lines? For both films the score was by MSV.
It seemed as if some of the most challenging (and also memorable) solos belonged to the VJ list from the late seventies, upto the mid-eighties. This might have also had a direct relationship to the popularity of actors like Lakshmi, Sri Vidya, K R Vijaya, Sujatha, Latha, Sri Priya.
Why VJ withdrew from film singing since the late 80s remains a mystery, although she did sing for Neela just a year ago.

Naaz, I,m sorry I don't remember the Dharmam songs-there were 2 solos by SJ and one was good. The film bombed at the box office and the songs too were never broadcast much on the radio.
The song Ganga Yamuna saraswathi is from Deiveega Ragangal (1980)-Music-MSV). Another good song from the film-Oduvathu azhagu ratham (Jolly Abraham-SJ).
Naaz, are you sure Aadugal Nanaigindrana was by MSV? I seem to think of it as by Chandrabose.
You are right about VJ's sudden disappearance from film singing. Even as late as 1987, she was singing many songs- Manithan, Chinna poove mella Pesu, Michael Raj, Thaalidhaanam, Oorkavalan, Thirumathi oru vegumathi, Paruvaragam, Poopoova poothirukku are some which come immediately to mind. (Incidentally, Poo poova poothirukku -vaasam veesum vanna cholai-Mano-VJ, was by T.Rajendar. I read somewhere in newtfmpage that Nenjil oru ragam was the only film of TR with VJ, which is incorrect). And just the year before, VJ made waves by her superb Kavithai kelungal-Punnagai Mannan. Besides being a great song, it holds the distinction of being the first tamil film song to be fully recorded in computerised music. I remember VJ being interviewed in all the tamil magazines about her experience in singing this song.
In 1988 too, there were flashes like Sangeetham paada- Ithu namma aalu, Thodalaam thottalum-Kalicharan, Vayasukku vanakkm- Kaliyugam, Oh, kaadhal ennai-Kodi parakkuthu (VJ's version is far better), Moongil ilai kaadugale-Penmani aval kanmani, Malligai poo malai-Thaai pasam, Vaaika varappukkulle- Thaai mel aanai--
The other causes for VJ being gradually sidelined may be the rapid rise of Chitra, and the decline of MSV and SG. Even in the films that MSV and SG had, they gave very few oppurtunities to VJ. For example, MSV did a musical called Thanga kalasam in 1988- forgettable film, but lovely songs, and all were by Chitra, save one folksy number by SJ.
Perhaps only Chandrabose continued to call her.
1n 1989, one hardly heard VJ at all- she was all but forgotten. Pachai pulla-Pudhiya paathai, Thaai maman- Thaainaadu, Ponnana etta thottu- Ponmanaselvan (perhaps, VJ's last song under IR in tamil films?)and Sakalakala sammandi didn't create any ripples.
I've heard she continued singing for dubbed films.
She came back with Ethu sugam sugam (Vandicholai Chinrasu-ARR), but nothing after that.
Wish she'd come back in tamil films--

"Wish she'd come back in tamil films..." -
Saravanan, that's my wish too, and I am sure other posters in this forum will also add their voices to the "come back" chorus.
But the notion of "come back" assumes that one has "left" and has to be persuaded to "return." I don't believe that is the case with singers like VJ, KJY, UR, BSS and many others. They are still around, and they are still just as spectacular. I believe, it is the scene that's changed and the emphasis has moved from talent to "trend>"
For instance, what is wrong with Seergazhi Sivachidambaram or T.L. Maharajan? They are TFM royalty, and come with impeccable credentials. And they are still in form. And yet, the songs which could be essayed by these singers with gusto and authenticity (and in Thooya Tamizh) go the way of Shankar Mahadevans and Sukhwinder Singhs...
Is it the absence of talent and training which stands in the way of these SSC and TLM? I doubt.
VJs case is along the same lines. A committed, trained and qualified artiste who has proved her mettle in all kinds of genre-singing. She has achieved great prominence and her presence in TFM was a source of inspiration to many aspiring singers and listeners alike. She still retains that clarity and aura and magic in her singing. Yet.
The slow fade of SG, MSV, CB (and the demise of VB, KVM) may have have been significant for any number of reasons. But I think it is more than that - it is a collective transformation in the approach to Film Music in general, which has relegated exceptional singers to the sidelines.
Trend and Technology are the buzz words. Tradition and Training are the the new lepers on the block (and have been for a decade or so.) Given that anyone with a keyboard or the right contacts can be turned into an overnight MD or Singer is symptomatic of a shift in emphasis. Credentials? Not needed. Talent? Nothing the sound engineer can't fix. Tamizh pronunciation? Let's call it cute - and the janta laps it up.
The kernel is this:
When nobody (listeners/ producers of TFM) cares about language, authenticity, calibre, artistic committment and training - when nobody knows better - what difference does it make?
When face-to-face with such disregard and dumbing of aesthetic expectations, an artiste of excellence has two choices:
1. Join the celebration of valuelessness (unconscionable for any self-respecting and accomplished artiste.)
2. Or, choose dignity and dedication and not wait for the phone to ring.
(Of course, VJ does answer the phone, I am sure. She did last year for a call from VB for Neela. As she also did for YSR's call for Nandhaa.)
Saravanan: Do the current generation of youngsters in TN and outside of India, really know the tamizh they speak or hear? Hasn't the richness and appeal of the language been slowly eroded with an unstoppable urge for commercial popularity? Tell me, what does excellence really signify these days?

Everyone,
I have uploaded some really rare songs taken from audio tapes. The quality of the recording is not the greatest. If anyone has suggestions to improve the sharpness and clarity of the songs please send me an email or post your suggestions here and I will be very grateful to you. neeldee2002@hotmail.com
