TMS, Vani Jayaram are notorious for their negative remarks on IR. Even we hear that KR passed some comments on ARR. I have read the frontline article where Naushad, HPChaurasia, L Vaidyanathan showered praises upon IR. In this thread, can we get to know all of those compliments, jealous and negative comments of various artistes on other various artistes. It will be interesting for those who do not the full content of what was said and when said.

Hi,
I've observed that MDs influenced by Ilaiyaraja are shunned , by some, for lack of originality. The ones whose music is tangentially different from Ilaiyaraja are also shunned because they are not like Ilaiyaraja, by others :-)

Hi!
I'm deeply sorry for having posted three times. I was having problems with my connection. Ravi anna, can you please get rid of the unnecessary postings. Sorry again.
Kaushik
The guy spent probably six years playing in studios for other musicians. He started when he was 11. It is understandable if he said it got to monotonous. Imagine yourself having to spend your time in studios while other kids your age were out having fun. And anyways, does he have to mention Illayaraja every time he gives an interview just to satisfy IR's fans.

Is this thread for discussing emotional & derogatory remarks made by TFM personalities or is it to make such remarks on them? I request people to moderate their language.

Here's something from an old 1985 interview of ARR......
There was a news segment
profiling Rahman in the
news magazine India this
week which was telecast
over channel 56 in Wash.
DC here (in 1995). Here are
some snippets from the
interview.
So sayeth ARR (verbatim):
"Directors - they want more music...People - they want more music...but...it is getting difficult to balance the quality and the quantity...But (smiles) as long as the fight continues and quality wins...its ok."
ARR's chief inspiration is his father Shekar (a music director too, who died when ARR was very young). ARR took to music when he was very young, played keyboard and guitar for "local rock groups" before joining Ilayaraja's troup and later turning to score ad jingles.
Thus spoke ARR:
"It is not a good past...(adds quickly) but that's ok. At the end of it all...during the climax... like when I was losing interest in life, you can say....everything started happening."
Quote
- "Nobody can be completely original...because the notes are already there...from the notes we form a raag and from the raag a tune...it is a process. As far as possible, to my conscience, I try to be original...'
The reporter quoted ARR's main musical inspirations as
Ilayaraja and RD Burman.

Geetha
Have got any other questions and answers from the interview. I am a THEEVIRA chitra fan. BY the way, Chitra's favorite song is "Vileeyai Kaathaiyaeluthu" sung by KJ and Susheela. And she has said in one interview that " Jannakiamma enral ennaku uyir ".

Aruvi: No one expects ARR to lavish praise on IR just for IR's fans. We (atleast I) are only trying to find out his attitude towards IR.

I am surpised that you gus believe that ARR's music does not have IR's influence. "chinna chinna aasai" from Roja was very similar to chinna chinna fom mouna raagam or the songs by SJ in punnagi mannan and idhaythai thirudathe. Kadhal rojave song was nothing new either..IR had scored tons of songs similar to that..same with ottagathi kattiko in Gentleman...typical IR song. Infact the song veerapandi kottayile from Thiruda Thiruda is a lift from IR's 'Ottam Konda Raasave". The song with no musical instruments that ARR tried...IR tried it way back in Pagalil Oru Iravu. So, trying to position ARR has come out with a newstyle of music is just a marketing myth... The difference is ARR sticks to a particular style and thus gets associated with this particular style while Raja because of his genius provides tremendous versatality and variety and hence people provide this bogus credit to ARR. I hope there are at least some intelligent people who could see through the rubbish that ARR has somehow created a new style of music.

rubbish that ARR has somehow created
interesting... this is sure to sparkle another controversy.
IMHO, ARR's style is distinctive and new. just because IR's influence is felt(even that is subjective, i don't see any resemblence between the two "chinna chinna") in some cases, his style cannot be termed as rubbish.

Geetha:
In fact there is a reason why artists are scared to comment on other artists.
In fact what Vani Jayaram told about Ilayaraja, is in her opinion MSV is great than Ilayaraja.(When she was asked who is best) Thats all and look at her fate.

It seems to me that IR has got something against people who likes an MD other than him. Why should he get upset about Vani liking MSV. An honest question with no intentions of hurting anyone, so please don't lash out at me.

I don't see any resemblance between ARR's and IR's styles.
For one thing, some Jazz sounds that ARR uses have not been attempted by IR (e.g. the interludes from the slow "vennela vennela" song from kadhal Desham.
In fact, ARR is a refreshing change from Raja and Raja-style composers. I think his style is quite original and distinctive and one of the main reasons why I admire his music (excl the very recent albums)

yeah novelty,
enakku therinju IR never used any jazz rhythms. ARR has to be patted on the back for superbly incorporating something as alien as jazz into a tamil song, though the sax was straight out of any of the 1920's big band jazz troupes. same's the case with hard rock bordering on metal. ARR did some terrific riffs in Palakkattu machchaanukku from May Maadham (padam kodunkodumai), kannum kannum kollai adithaal from thiruda thiruda and in the BGM for Iruvar (the scenes involving the reborn aish).
kudos to ARR for bringing in new elements into the stale world of tamil film music.
what i don't like is people saying ARR is greater just because he's done all this or that IR's greatness is diminished in some way because he hasn't. raaja enrum raaja thaan. naan oru thadavai sonna 100 thadavai sonna maathiri, ok!
each one to his own.
peace out, folks.

Yes Badshaa,
My sentiments exactly. ARR should be accepted as a refreshing change, for all the varied influences that he has brought into TFM and Indian music in general (though not all of them are good :-)) ).
On the other hand, it is still to early to compare him with doyens like IR. Actually, I find it strange that people even consider the possibility of comparison.
I would like to see ARR take off from where he left in Thiruda Thiruda, Pudhiya Mugham and Duet. Honestly, his latest albums reek of un-inspiration (incl. the much publicised Vande Matharam). I feel he has to do more if he wants greater appreciation than the countless numbers of Pop artistes that are plaguing Indian music. :-)

ygeetha:
No problem, I was surprised a little bit
at first and thought it should be in 1990s.
And one more thing, he isn't very consistent
saying Ilaiyaraaja is one among his musical
inspirations. I follow his interviews from the
beginning, sometimes he deliberately missed
Ilaiyaraaja out but only recent times he
started accepting this. One reason may be he
is matured now than yesteryears.

MSV to IR:
After listening to "Valayosai kala kala" MSV wondered:
"Ennappa idhu paattukku mettu ezhudhinaangala illai mettukku paatu pottaangala ? edhu mudahlla ?"
Regarding Symphony:
"Raja symphony pottu mudinjathum ennai veettukku azhaithu pottu kaanbichar. Romba thirami vaindhavar. Miga arumaiyai senjirukkar. Idhai tamil makkal eppadi eduthuppangannu theriyalai"
