Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Kaumudi: The way the programme shaping up, she is not limitimg herself to songs of any particular language/genre- though the focus is more (naturally) on her Malayalam Film songs, she is singing Oriya, Bengali, Rajasthani songs as well, and I expect she will definitely sing some Telugu songs too in the coming weeks.

Saravanan -
Thanks for your TellingVisual summary. It is really generous of you to make the time and share the programme verbally with the not so fortunate!
How many episodes of the VJ segment are forthcoming?
I only hope somebody somewhere (that I might meet sometime) has recorded these shows and I can get to see them. Please keep us in our envious state with further briefings! :-)

Dear Saravanan,
Thanks for the excellent write up on VJ's programme. I still remember watching VJ's rendition of the kashmiri song -I think it was sometime during 1988/1989-(my final Bsc. Agriculture days).
There was a brief write up and a brief interview posted in deccan herald website
http://www.deccanherald.com/deccanherald/jun08/ent5.asp
Its great to know about VJ's music workshops. I wish I had the opportunity to participate in those workshops.

Thank you for the link. I had heard about the workshop from a friend in Bangalore. I believe it was a success and VJ has been invited to conduct more.
Sriram - Good to know you are around. Speak up, will ya? :-)

Balaji - Gald to see your post and thanks for that link (av- it works fine for me!)
Wondering- why do you wonder- these songs do exist for sure:
My song is for you, my love is for you-Guess Who is by SPB(Paattum Bharathamum, MSV, 1975)
* On a hot summer morning A girl went to walking-SPB- the song was featured in SOTD earlier (Raani Yaar Kuzhandai,Music by TV Raju, 1972)
* No No No kaadhal kadhai solveno is by SPB-VJ ( Unakkaga Naan, -MSV-1976)- We have covered this song in the chronology earlier
*nEtru varai viNNil irundhaaLO indru mudhal maNNil vaLarndhaaLO -SPB & B Vasantha-it is not from Ethirikal jaakkirathai, it is from Karunthel Kannayiram- Shyam- 1972)

Thanks Saravanan.
I was wondering because of the English lines and that too with unsual imagery like "a hot summer morning."

Though I don't post often, the first thing I do after getting connected to the net is to browse tfm page and VJ's thread. I really enjoy reading yours, saravanan, kamudi and others write ups.

Small digress on devotionals, personally when it comes to devotionals, they are made for a loftier purpose and I wouldnt try to rate them on orchestration/singing/tunes, all that matters is the lyrics, whoever sings them is immaterial.
Still..has anyone heard of Vani's Christian devotional 'Sathiya Vedham bhaktharin geedham'? A soft tune that VJ renders in such melancholy fashion that just adds punch to the convicting yet encouraging lines. It used to come on the radio years ago, I am hunting all over the net for it, but unsuccessful :-(
About VJ's Bharatiyam Hindi song, it was used for the theme dance during the opening ceremony for the Asian Track n Field championships that kicked off on Nehru's birth centenary(14/11/89). There was another theme song 'Tracks of Friendship' sung by Sharon Prabhakar on that occasion.
Interestingly about the same month, on Sunday nights there was a half hour prog on playback/pop singers. Anyone knows if VJ was featured? I do remember Sharon, Preeti Sagar(My heart is beating' singer in Julie??) interviewed in one of the episodes

Neel D has uploaded a rare Kannada duet by VJ-SPB (composed by SPB) at the website.
The song scintillates from start to finish. The voices blend, complement and still establish their individual charm. Opening with a fine alapana the duet concludes with a unified swarasancharam.
SPB and VJ worked well together (Gowri Manohari is another fine collaboration.) Someone (either in this thread or some other - don't remember) said that VJ was only good for classical songs. Try saying that SPB is only good for nullaivu kuzhaivu songs and you'd understand the rage that such thoughtless generalisations might inspire. (But - there is no doubt that VJs classical film songs are embellished by an unmistakable "verve." Like a hunter moving in for the kill with precision and irrepressible excitement - VJs voice cannot hide its classical joy!)
Give Raagake Swaravagi a listen if you haven't already.

Raagake swaravagi is a nice song. Sometimes it feels good without too many instruments dominating the wonderful voices, especially in a song like this. VJ as usual was good. It came as a surprise that Balu composed music for this song. He has some amazing talents in him! Thanks for the recommendation.

How true! You've zeroed in on the one HUGE lack in current film music: MDs have forgotten that the VOICE is a music INSTRUMENT unlike any other. The overwhelming orchestration trend serves only one positive purpose: It does its best to conceal mediocre, flawed and foregttable (non)singing :-)

I goofed (again.) The MD for the Raagake Swaravagi song is M. Ranga Rao, and not SPB as quoted. SPB is the MD for the film Sowbhagyalakshmi (also in the Kannada section at the website.) Mea Culpa!

If its any consolation, my computer still doesn't do tamizh font. I have not read any of the tamil script links from here in nearly 6 months!

Although heavy orchestrization is being dominant now and probably has to toned down a bit, there have been numerous examples of songs with just enough orchestrization without pushing the limits. One relatively recent song that I liked in this respect is Malare mounama by VS. It has a beautiful feel to the whole song with the orchestrization and at the same time, it doesn't kill SPB & SJ's voices.
As the sanskrit proverb goes "Athi sarvathra varjayaeth" - too much is too bad.

I will check out the song you mention. Yes, there are still a few songs that display a commitment to the essentials - voice, words, cultural nuance. But such instances are easily identifiable (and never more than a handful at any given time of the year) only because such songs seem "odd" more and more. Strange wouldn't you say, and perhaps a sign of the times, when exception(al) songs seem like anomalies!
I don't know if you've heard this duet (but I've been caught in this loop for all of the morning) by VJ-SPB from Velichchaththukku Vaanga (MD; GA)
"Natchchaththira Poovai Eduththu Maalaith Thoduththu Tharattuma..."
It opens with a soothing alaap by SPB and from then on the magic spreads. Also, the two highpoints are the singers' elaboration at two lines: SPB "Mullaikkodi Pesudhe" and "Tholirandil Aadava" - these are classy moments. Give it a listen, if only to discover the fine compositional abilities of GA. (I think this song is available at the website in the VJ-SPB duets section, although I have not checked in the recent past.)
