TFM boasts of several contemporary poets like Bharadhidhasan, Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram, Kannadhasan and Vali (Version I) who penned several songs dealing with social issues such as work ethic (uzhaippu), labor rights, women's position in society, religion, caste, patriotism/ nationalism, money/power/greed and the such. In addition, non-film kavidhaigaL from Bharadhi and Bharadhidhasan have been included in TFM to heighten social awareness.
Let's go ahead and discuss some of these songs--old and new--which address some key social issues even as they were entertaining the masses in the context of the movie situation. Please elaborate on the lyrics and your thoughts on the same as your time would allow.

Samudhaayathei seer thiruththum paadalgal niraya undu.
As per the heading of this subject, I begin my discourse in Thamizh. :-))
Intha vagaiyilaana paadalgalil MGR-thaan muthal idaththil nirkkiraar.
Probably this has something to do with his political ambitions. Many people have been inspired by many of his songs. At any motivational programmes in Malaysia - on stage, radio or TV - MGR songs are inevitably played . I don't think it is very different in India.
Like Kanchana has said, Bharadhidhasan, Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram, Kannadhasan and Vali have contributed to such songs, which have been used effectively in Cinema. Adimeil adivaiththaal ammiyum nagarum enbathu pazhamozhi. It is with this hope that such poets have been constantly churning out such songs to reach out and mould the mind of the masses
Many of you have discussed Bharathiyaar and Bhaarathidhaasan's songs. (Kanchana - new songs seem to be the underdog here. :-))
Let me try to come up with some new songs, along this line of thoughts.. The first thought that appears in my mind is MGR-related, of course. The lifes of MGR and Karunanidhi wer brilliantly captured in the movie, Iruvar. Yet another underdog in this DF, Vairamuthu, has penned the lyrics. While the music and lyrics have tried to be faithful of the bygone era, the songs have certainly a contemporary feel.
Both Kannaik katti kollaathei kandathaiyellaam nambaatehi and Aayiraththil naan oruvan, neengal aanaiyittaal padai thalaivan are songs with strong political messages. But beneath that obvious exterior, there are some wonderful social messages, which should motivate one to rise above the current situations. Here are some samplings:
Political Awakenings
Velli mazhai sindhum mazhai maegam vilambaram koduththaal pozhiyaadhu
Makkal sakthi kaasukku valaiyaadhu ada paniyaadhu

The present day MGR is, without any doubt, MGR. :-))
Let's see how he is trying to shape society in his songs.
Anti-Violence
Oruvan oruvan muthalaali ulagil matravan thozhilaali
Vidhiyai ninaippavan yeimaali athai vendru mudippavan arivaali
Boomiyai vella aayutham etharku poopparikka koadari etharkku
Ponnoa poruloa poarkkalam etharkku aasai thurandhaal agilam unakku
Mannin meedhu manithanukkaasai manidhan meedhu mannukkaasai
Mannthaan kadaisiyil jeyikkiradhu idhai manamthaan unara marukkiradhu
Vaanam unakku boomiyum unakku varappugaloadu sandaigal etharku
Vaazha cholludhu iyarkaiyada vaazhvil thunbam seyarkaiyada
K. Balachander is IMO a director who has always addressed social problems in his movie. Alcoholism and its effects has been addressed umpteen times on the sceen. But, in his little way, KB has shown how a normal guy is driven to the bottle and his eventual miseries:
Ills of Alcoholism

Sathiya Keerthi - Thanks for your input. Appadiyey paadalin thalaippai koduththirunthaal innum nalla irukkumey. :-))
Continuing my thoughts:
KB is also a master in exploring relationships. In the song Kalyaana maalai kondaadum penney he likens a husband-wife relationship to: Suruthiyoadu layam poalavey, inaiyaagum thunaiyaagum samsaara sangeedhamey
Here is a philosophical look at marriage:
Virtues in a Marriage
Vaalibangal oadum vayathaagakkoodum, anaalum anbu maaraathammaa
Maalaiyidum sondham mudipoatta bandham, pirivennum sollae ariyaadhammaa
Nalla manaiyaalin naesam oru koadi, nenjamenum veenai paadumae thoadi, santhoasha saamraajyamey.
In the next stanza, the lyricist (?) has stressed on the importance of "space" - even within a marriage:
Koovuginra kuyilai koottukkul vaiththu, paadendru sonnaal paadaathamma
Soalaimayil thannai siraivaiththu pootti, aadenru sonnaal aadaathamma
Naalthoarum rasigan paaraattum kalainjan kaavalgal enakkillaiyei
Soagangal enaakum nenjoadu irukkum sirikkaatha naalillaiyei
Next, I'd like to go a little bit in the past in the early 80s'. Preservation of the environment and nature were new topics then. Here is Malaysia Vasudevan appreciating nature and examining its relevance and importance to the human race:
Environment
Alli thandha boomi annaiyallavaa, solli thandha vaanam thandhaiyallavaa
Purandu oadum nadhimagal, irandu karaiyum kavidhaigal
Kaniththa kaalam valarththa ninaivugal, ilamai ninaivai isaikkum therukkal
Kalli ninra kaattil mullaigalei, kaaranamaadhanum theinoa
Viriyum pookkal paalangal, visiriyaadum naanalgal
Maraththin veirum magizhchi padukkaiyei, pazhaiya soagam iniyum illai

Arvind:
Thank you for the manidhA manidhA info.
NOV:
Thank you for that well-organized contribution. I hope you & others will continue on with the new (post-Kannadhasan era) songs, as your schedules would permit.
Re the "old" songs, we still need to address the contributions of Udumalai Narayana Kavi (Keerthi has touched on this), Pattukkottaiyaar, Marudhakasi and Kannadhasan/Vali in a systematic fashion. I hope Pazhaiya Paadal Knowledgeables like Manisekaran and Keerthi will find the time to talk about these poets in that order.
Again, thanks to all for your input: I learned a lot.
