Song of the Day: soppana vaazhvil maghizhndhu from Sivakavi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/soppana.rm
- An all time classic, sung by MKT. The film ran for more than a year. The music was by G.Ramanathan, lyrics by Papanasam Sivan. The raagam for this song sounds like Sivaranjani to me, but is said to be in Vijayanaagari, a raagam I hadn't heard of before. It seems Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar had composed a couple of songs in this raagam earlier.
- Randor Guy wrote on this movie:
Bhagavathar's next film 'Sivakavi' (1943), featuring T. R. Rajakumari, Serukalathur Sama and Jayalakshmi, was another success and musical feast. Shot in Coimbatore, the film was initially directed by Raja Sandow, but when a misunderstanding arose between him and the producer, Coimbatore-based S.M. Sreeramulu Naidu, Raja Sandow was replaced by Bomman Irani with Naidu directing him! As usual many songs became hits (Music-Papanasam Sivan). The memorable melodies include "sOppana vAzhvil….."…. "kavalayai tIrpadu nATTiya kalayE…" VvadanamE candra bimbamO…"( one of the immortal melodies of Indian Film Music)

Saravanan styilil:)
Chozha creations "Amaravathy" was the followup from the team behind the runaway hit "Thalaivasal". The movie, *ing Ajith (debut) and Sanghavi (debut) and directed by Selva (Puthayal, Pooveli) , was however a huge disaster prompting producer Chozha Ponnurangam to go into an extended hibernation. He recently returned to film production with the moderately successful "Kalatpadai". The MD Balabarathy also did the Selva (Dr. Rajasekhar's brother) starrer "Golmaal".

During my school days, I remember, DD was showing up a serial called Neela Maala (Keladi Kanmani Neena was acting in this). I think Balabharathy composed the music for this serial. I couldnt recollect any other serials for which he has composed music!
Saravanan, Yeah, Amaraavathy is the first movie for Ajith as a hero. It was released in 1993 and Pavithra was in 1994. Amaraavathy is directed by Selva. Thalaivaasal had lots of Gaana bit songs and these were more popular during my college days (Adee Udee uttan paaru, Vaan Nilavee Venn Pani, Kodi Assainthathum, Sooda bottleaa and few more)
The other songs in Amaraavathy are
1. Adi sokku sundari (SPB and Subha)
2. HaaHaa Kanvee thaanaa (SPB) - this is also a nice song
3. Puu Malarnthathu Bhoomikku thaane (Minmini) - this is yet another nice song
4. Udalenna Uyir Enna (Ashok) - Philosophical tone!

Saravanan,
Yes!
I remember Naazar is the pair for Sangavi. I vaguely remember the story. Naazer is the husband of Sangavi and she becomes an amnesia patient. Ajith and Sangavi start to love each other. And at the end Naazar steps in (as expected) and the end of the story I forgot :)

Nazar, if I'm right, played the role of father to Sangavi. An excellent performance by Nasser. Vasanth, I think, played the to-be husband, villian role. Not a great movie except for the songs & Nasser.

bb: I think Vijayanagari was 'invented' by Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar and he himself has only one composition in that raga.

Paging Udhaya,BB, Saravanan, Srikanth etc and all other regulars!!
Like some of you know, SPB is on a US tour and his next stop is at Atlanta. I have a buddy in Atlanta who has signed up as a volunteer for the show. He'll be showing the troupe (Laxman Sruthi) around, plus *sigh* the volunteers get to go to dinner with the man himself. Well, my buddy does not want to bombard him with lame questions. So I was hoping you guys could pitch in with some actual questions that might evoke his interest. Thanks!
PS: bb, sorry about having to post this here. I did not want to start a seperate thread so as not to attract all the riff-raff. :)

Kitcha, I guess most qns have been asked again and again. Here are some from the top of my head:
1. What did you do to adapt a thamizh accent and be so successful at it? Many wouldn't even know that Thamizh is not your mother tongue.
2. You made a decision not to sing vulgar songs, but was that too little too late?
3. How did it feel to direct IR and MSV for a song that you composed? Did they try to put on their composers' hat?

Song of the Day: varuvaai manamOhanaa from Inspector.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/varuvaai.rm
- A hilarious song. This is a situational song, with dialogues in between, of a recording session. Quite funny to listen to.
- Saravanan writes:
‘Varuvaai Manamohana’ is sung by VN Sundaram and MLV from the film
Inspector-1953.
Jupiter Pictures’ Inspector-1953 starred TK Shanmugam, MS Draupadhi, TK
Bagavathi and others. I am not sure about the Music Director for the film.
Other songs in the film include:
Aasaiayai mounamaai pesidum kanngalum- (Radha)Jayalakshmi
Madhana singara nee vaa- MLV
Moodi irundha en vizhiyinul - MLV
Ennum pothilae idhayam veguthae- AM Raja, Jikki
Unnai allaal thunai-Jikki
Thuyar soozhntha vaazhvilae-Jikki
Nadaga Thamizh Vendhar ‘Avvai’ T Kannusamipillai Shanmugam (1912-1973)
stands tall as the doyen of the Tamil Theatre Movement. He was a brilliant
actor, whose stage performances remain unparalleled to this day. He acted
only in a few films, and among them Menaka-1935, Balamanai-1937, Bhoologa
Ramba-1940, Gumasthavin Penn-1941, Bilhana-1948, Penn Manam-1952 and
Manithan-1953 are particularly noteworthy. Who can forget his moving
performance in the role of Subramaniya Siva in the film Kappalattoya
Thamizhan- 1961? The TN Govt. ensured that his name is mouthed often, at
least by Chennai residents, by renaming the busy Loyds Road as Avvai
Shanmugham Salai.
Madras Lalithangi Vasanthakumari (1928-1990) has sung some amazing film
songs in her time. That many awesome classical film songs came her way
causes no surprise, but what is wonderful is that she sang many offbeat
songs too, and carried them off with fantastic grace! ‘Ayya saami aavoji
saami’- Or Iravu-1951, and ‘Ezhayin kovilai naadinaen’-Panam-1952 are some
unforgettable instances of the versatility of this great artiste.
Visaloor N Sundaram (born 1918) was a child prodigy. His early tutelage in
Madurai Balavinodha Sangeetha Sabha sharpened his singing and acting
talents. He acted in many films in the 30s and 40s- Markkandeya-1935,
Chandrahasa-1936, Sundaramoorthi Nayanar-1937, Sri Shankarachariyar-1939,
Subhadra Arjuna-1941 and Dhana Amaravathi-1947 are some of the films in
which VNS shone as a singing star.
When acting opportunities stopped coming, in the 50s, VNS took to playback
singing, and has sung many memorable songs. Why, his very first song as a
playback singer is an immortal classic- ‘Chinnanjiru Kiliaye’, with MLV,
from Manamagal-1951. Like MLV, Sundaram too has given ample evidence of
infinite versatility- along with some classical/devotional numbers, VNS had
a blast in hilarious songs like ‘Raathiri boovakke lottery’-Koondukkili-1954
and ‘Kaviyin kanavil vaazhum kaviyamey’-Kalyanam Panniyum Brahmachari-also
1954. It is sad that today VNS is barely remembered, and that too only as
the voice of Sivaji in ‘Vetri Vadivelanae’ (Veera Pandiya Kattabomman).
‘Rock Rock Rock’ sung by VNS, along with Chandrababu (Pathibhakthi) was
earlier featured in SOTD.
‘Varuvaai Manamohana’ is a unusual song- the situation seems to be that of a
film director teaching an actress how to emote for a song sequence- The
director’s reactions are particularly hilarious- and the song has some
brilliant classical moments too (Simmendramadhyamam?). VNS and MLV simply
scintillate. Listen on--
- Manisegaran mentions that the MD for this film was G.Ramanathan.

Nice song bb. It could be heard just for the dialogues in between if not for anything else.I would have preferred to have MLV render those semiclassicals from Ivan instead of her disciple, if she had been alive today.Elegance, thy name is(and will be) MLV
