Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Song of the Day: kattOdu kuzhalaada aada from periya idaththup peN.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kattodu.rm
- A great song to head to the weekend. I was reminded of this song when I heard a piece composed by Srikanth yesterday. Srikanth composed this one, with the words "kattOdu kuzhalaada aada" as the first line. You can listen to the piece here:
http://www.srikanthd.com/dev/kmix1.mp3
- MD are Viswanathan Ramamoorthy. Sung by TMS, PS and L.R.Eswari. Lyrics by Kannadasan. There are several good songs from this movie.
- MS points out:
The song "kattOdu kuzal aada" has a line " pachcharisi pallaada". A college student pursuing his M.phil ( I guess) found this to be a total misfit in the song. He wrote to KD :"pal kizavikku thaanE aadum ?" KD realized that he had indeed made a mistake and admitted it.
- Songs with the same ending "Osai" in all lines: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/12021.00:11:33.html

One of the great 'gramiya' paadalgaL. Superb bb.
One would wonder who are the females in the movie singing this song. I remember they are MaNimala (PS) who acts as MGR's sister and 'very young' Jyothilakshmi (LRE). ThaNNikuLLa irundhu kaigaLaL vaLaavi konday paaduvaargaL.... Superb scene to watch too these two! Curse those days which gave only BW movies..

Another 'classic' weekend! Thanks bb!
RR Pictures' Periya Idathu Penn-1963 starred MGR, Sarojadevi, TR Rajakukamri, Ashokan and others. It was directed by TR Ramanna. It was a runaway hit. It was an entertaining tale of a rustic youth taming an arrogant city bred rich girl. The immense success that the film enjoyed ensured that the same story would be retold again and again in Tamil Cinema- Sivaji's Pattikaada Pattanama-1972, Jaishankar's Kalyanamaam Kalyanam-1974 and Kamal's Sakalakalavallavan-1982 are just a few examples.
Periya Idathu Penn had some great songs:
Avanukkenna thoongivittaan-TMS
Andru vandhadhum adhey nila-TMS-PS (Happy & pathos versions)
Pattanam paartha mapillaiyai (Kannenna kannenna kalanguthu)-TMS
Paarappa Pazhaniyappa-TMS
'Katrodu kuzhalaada' is an enthralling visual treat as well- in b&w of course, of dawn in a rural milieu--the sun rising--the two girls (Manimala and Jothilakshmi?) bathing in the river---a mundasu kattiya MGR enjoying their song--
MSV-TKR herald the village effect so well- 'Thaazhayam poo mudichu' (TMS-PL/ Bagappirivinai) and 'Varusham maasi thedhi paarthu' (SJ-MSV/ Maniyosai) are other such unforgettable pastoral songs that come to mind.
And if this song brings out the ambience of the hamlet, 'Andru vandhadhum adhey nila' is a great feet-tapping western dance number.

nice song...Thanks to the new Kodaikanal substation, inaugurated on Pongal '87(a Wed), central TN districts started receiving Chennai Tholaikaatchi and the evening was marked by a 'sirappu Oliyum Oliyum', which began with this song. So in effect, this was the first TFM song on TV to most districts of TN, leaving aside Chitramala and reg lang feature films!

I think 'Periya Idaththu PeN' had 2 more songs:
ragasiyam parama ragasiyam - by PS (romba ragasiyamaaga paaduvaar PS... superb rendition)
thuLLi Odum kAlgaLenge by TMS+PS ???

bb Excellent Song
Periya idathu pen as saravanan mentioned was super duper hit.
MGR-Sarojadevi the perfect pair, with awesome songs from MSV-TKR, Comedy by nagesh all were the reasons and ofcourse M.R.Radha too.
Manimala,Jyothilakshmi are not MGR's sisters. Manimala will be mnatched for MGR meanwhile asokan will play some trick & marry her..
coming to songs
1. Andru vandadhum idhe nila- is ofter heard, popular song in radio/tv
2.Kattodu kuzhalada aada the humming by LRE &
PS add spl beauty
3. parappa, rahasiyam, thulli odum kaalgal enge were also great songs
thanks bb

Sabapathy, I am surprised that they didn't feature a religious song to start it all off.
Isn't kaNNenna kaNNenna kalanguthu from the same movie?

They did actually start the whole program off with a religious song, with MS singing "Kurai ondrum illai" if I remember right. Until then ppl like us outside of Chennai were contented with just 1 channel in our TV, that of Delhi. The good old days :-)

I think there was a ban on this song originally for KD s lines
"Pavadai katrada aada ..." (cinema Virumbi please take over!!!).
SKV a jazzy, crude remake is an insult to this "Original".
Pattikada Pattanama ,i think, will fall under "Poova Thalaya" and Savale SamaLi style.(I think even during the "NalVazhthu naan solluven" song JL would know it is Mookiah and not Mukesh!!)
MSV-TKR s village series would not be complete without
"Therodum enga " Bagapirivinai (a classic one for Oyilattam)
"Ennai eduthu" from Padagoti
"Oodam nathiyinele" from Kathirutha Kangal.
On Andru vanthathum athey Nila - I like the version in "EngaL Thangam" Villupaatu. The Chachacha will get a "Bhajan" effect!

One of my all time fav songs.. happy to have accidentally participate here today..
Takes one to a village setting.. I actually love to see MGR is such a rural set-up..
Sivaji too was outstanding in a rural set-up in Pazhani.
Nevertheless Kattodu is a great song forever. Must rank as one of LRE's best songs certainly.

Song of the Day: puththam puthu malarE from Amaravathy.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/puthammalare.rm
- Balabharathi was a composer who showed a lot of potential, and then faded out. His first movie was Thalaivaasal, and he continued with Amaravathy. Amaravathy had some really good songs, like this one and "TajMahal thEvai illai". The lesser known bit was Amaravathy's title music, which used to be played in radio those days, and I liked it a lot.
- Sung by SPB.
- Balabharathi looked to make his comeback with Mahendran's saasanam (the movie about chettinaadu families, *ing Arvindswami). The movie, unfortunately didn't get released.

good lines of BalaB.
No wonder this song has the value for usual SPB's great voice.
I thank the music director for not putting too much beat which cud hv possibly faded the clearity of lines. It has come out well.

Good song. Canonical SPB, but no small achievement for a newbie MD. Whose lyric is this? Not bad. Tajmahal thevaiyillai is also good.
BTW, bb - you wrote that arvindswamy acted in the next (never took off) movie of balabharathy - but who acted in THIS movie.

Ajeeth and Sangavi, I think.

Balabarathi was good but came at a time when even IR's style was getting phased out and his own style was not much different from IR's either. The violin pieces in Taj Mahal thevai illai were inspired quite a bit by Anandha ragam ketkum from PanneerP. But I really wished that BB,Maragadhamani, Vidhyasagar all had more opportunities to score for atleast the second-tier movies in place of Deva, Sirpi and SAR in the mid-nineties. TFM wouldnt have been as pathetic as it was.
"adhikaalai kaatre nillu" "vaasal idhu vaasal" are amongst the other notable numbers of BB.

thanks again.

Yes, bb, Amaravathi did have Ajit and Sanghavi.
Perhaps Ajit's first Tamil film as hero, or was it Pavitra? Of course, he had appeared in a small role earlier in Paasa Paravaigal.
Was Amaravathi, too, like Thalaivasal, directed by Selva?
Another good song by Bhalabharathi was 'Unnai thotta thendral' from Thalaivasal.
