bb:
It was not the swarams at the end.
IMHO, It was the 'effect' the song created as a whole.
IMHO is beast that varies with people.
My IMHO patchi does not like this song :)

Song of the Day: Two M.M.Dhandapani Desikar Songs from Thirumazhi Alwar.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thirumazhi.rm
- Thanks to D.P.Rangan for this rare song. He writes on the song:
This is the last of the five films in which the doyen of
carnatic music late Dandapani Desikar acted as "tirumazhi alwar" the fourth
in the line of the illustrious alwars of medieval India. This was released
in 1948. The first song is a short but sweet incantation in praise of Lord
Narayana in the raga 'mohanam'. The next one is in praise of Lord va in
raga 'jhenjuruti'. The alwar sings both in praise of lord Narayana and lord
Shiva. Whether it happened really is a moot point. Both these songs were
written by the mastereo lyrist Papanasam Sivan and set to music by S.K.
Venkataraman another leading figure in those days. Both the songs sound
very sweet in our ears and could be a good one to play as one rises from bed
in the morning. May I hope that fellow music lovers would derive as great a
pleasure as I had and would listen to it again and again. I am indeed
grateful to Balaji, the architect of dhool.com to allow me to present the
song in his site.
- Randor Guy has written a detailed article on M.M.Dhandapani Desikar here:
http://www.sangeetham.com/ddesikar.htm
According to this article,
Desikar's' last film venture was " Thirumazhisai Alwar" (1948). This film was long in production due to financial problems and when released it hardly raised a ripple. Sadly the disaster ruined the producers. One of them was a successful automobile businessman of Mount Road, Madras and the other was a wealthy Brahmin businessman of Vepery. Few remember this film today.

bb, today’s SOTD is a pleasant surprise!
Thanks, DP Rangan, for taking this effort and sharing with us these forgotten bits of enchantment from a bygone era.
bb- thanks also for the link to the informative series of articles on Desigar. I beg to differ only on one point- the initials MM in Desigar’s name stand for Murugiah Muthiah, and not Madurai Muthiah as mentioned. As Mr. Randor Guy has written, Desigar was born in Thiruchengaattukkudi, which is in Thanjavur District. It was only when he got a job as a teacher in a Thevaram school that he moved to Madurai. Murugiah Desigar was his grandfather and Muthiah Desigar, his father, both acclaimed ‘Odhuvaar’s in their time.
Sri Kanna Films’ Thirumazhisai Alwar-1948 was the last film in which Desigar acted. Other than the two songs that feature as SOTD, other songs by Desigar in that film that come to mind are:
Kuvalaya thala neela baala Gokula paripaala (A good chorus supported Bhajan song, set in Kaapi ragam, Desigar’s voices casts a spell in the bit beginning with ‘Nandakumaara Yamuna vihaara’)
Vaaramal irupparo orukaal vaaramal irupparo, orukaal varuvaaro ariyaen, enai aala vaaraamal irupparo, Paaraamal irukkindra oror kanamum yugam (a soulful Ragamalika, sung with piety drenched fervor)
Shantham thavazhum siraichaalaiyil (Sindhu Bhairavi)
Indre pirandha payan adainthen, vaazhvil indre pirandha payan adainthen, ingenakkinai yevane- puvithanilae ingenakkinai yevanae--(a scintillating show in Simmendramadhiyamam, of particular enthrallment is the verse beginning with ‘paramaguruvin arulaal’)
Yezhaigal vaadavo Emperumaane, idharkkor mudivillayo (haunting in its melancholic feel, and bedecked with excellent lyrics)
Thandhaiyum nee, en thaayum nee vindhayum nee deivamum nee--unadhadimai unnodendrum naan vaazha ---(a dazzling Desh, which begins with such a slow tempo, and progresses to an unbelievably fast finish, with Desigar repeating the words ‘Kamalakkananae manivannanae’ in breakneck speed at least twenty times!)
With this film ended Desigar’s short but glorious career as a film actor.
The ragams that he set for Bharathidasan’s ‘Thunbam nergaiyil’ (Desh) and ‘Vennilavum vaanum polae’ (Jayanthasena?) were retained when R Sudarsanam and TG Lingappa composed music for Or Iravu-1951 and Kalyanam Panniyum Brahmachari-1954 respectively.
Later TG Lingappa made Desigar sing in Mudhal Thedhi-1955. ‘Yaen padaithaai Iraiva’ (I haven’t heard this song). However, I have listened many times to the two songs that Desigar sang for Chithoor Nagiah (himself a gifted singer), in the film Thirumanam-1958. Music: SMS. Both the songs ‘Aadiya paadham mandraadiya paadham, aadiya paadham nindraadiya paadham’ and ‘Karunaikkadalae, karpaga tharuvae charanam--Yaadhum unarndhava deva, idhu unaraayo deva’ are absolute treasures.
Listening to the SOTD prompted me to dig up my Desigar collection, as I have been typing, I have been listening to ‘En appan allava, en thaayum allava, ponappan allava ponnambalathava’-Nandanaar- as I listened to this joyous paean to Lord Siva, the nearby Mosque sounded the call to the evening prayer, and as both blended harmoniously in the serene evening air, I was left wondering at the Oneness of the Almighty--
Now I am listening to ‘Thaamarai pootha thadaagamadi, gyana thamaizh manathen pongi paayudhadi’ and ‘Nalla samayamada idhai nazhuva viduvaayo’ –both immortal classics from Desigar’s prized Thanippadal collection—and I am engulfed in the magic of the mystic voice of ‘Iasai Arasu’ MM Dhandapani Desigar all over again--

bb- Ennudaiya ragappulamai patri nangu arindha neengal ennidam ippadiyoru vina ezhuppalaamo :)
Anyway, these are the songs of Nandanar that I have in my Desigar collection. For some I have jotted down long back some raga references:
Sivaloga naathanaikandu sevithiduvom vaareer (Naathanamakriya)
Piththam theliya marundhondrirukkuthu perinba mandrinullae (Senjurutti)
Aiyae meththa kadinam (Punagavarali)
Varugalaamo Aiya undhan arugil nindru kondaadavum paadavum (Maanji)
Enappan allava en thayumallava
Thillai ambal thalam ondrikkuthaam
Pirava varam thaarum (Lathangi)
Pavi p*rayan indha ooril vandhum
Ellorum vaarungal sugamirukkuthu paarungal (Bilahari)
Kaana vendaamo kannirukkum pothae (Sri Ranjini)
Kaamam agatriya paadhan avan
Mudiyiloru kaal vaiththa viththaga
Hara hara hara hara shankara
Jaathiyenum thadai yaen
Perhaps by seeing this list, you can identify the Aarabhi song you're trying to recall?
Anyway, its something wonderful that thanks to SOTD, many of us who weren't even born during the life and times of Desigar, are, sitting in various corners of the world, today remembering him and his songs. And that precisely is the magical power of film music- from Sivaloga nathanai kandu of 1942 to Yaar yaar Sivam of 2003, good songs will live on forever.

bb: Thanks for the song by MMD. I was reminded of my days in Annamalai University when MMD was the head of the dept of Music. He gave a concert once and when he sang 'Thamarai Pootha' the whole audience roared. We used to see him taking a walk from his house towards the railway station clad in white with the silk angavastram. Those days are gone, but the memory lingers. Thanks again. Any chance of hearing Vasanthakokilam?
