When VJ sings "adhudhaan ippodhu paaduvadhuuuuu" for the final time at around the 3:10 minute mark you can see her finish is not smooth, losing much of the brighas which needed to be there. I am wondering as to how this slip happened. Otherwise the rendition is decent.

One of the excellent songs of VJ is "kannan koil".
MSV has made a trend of using VJ for such 'mediai katcheri' songs. Besides Ezhu swarangaLukkuL, Kannan Koil, there was "sugamaana raagangaLe" from Mrudhanga chakravarthi. Some more could be. This beautful classical SOTD, I pity, is part of a hopeless flop film.
Anyway, thanks bb for this lovely song.

Wow!!! 'Kannan kovil' ,a long forgotten song, which I used to hum. A lovely raagamaalika and VJ has done a splendid job.

can carnatic masters tell me which raga is used for this stanza? is it the same raga of "oru murai vandthu paarayo" from maNichitraThaazhu?
Gopiyar paadum geetham ithu
Gokula veenayin naadham ithu
Arjunan ariyaa Geethai ithu
adhu thaan ippodhu paaduvathu
for every charanam, different raga is used, I guess. normally MSV does it in his songs. It is very prominent in this song.

Saravanan, you said 'long vaNi song', I recalled at least half a dozen in that combo, but this did not strike. Though, I know this song very well. Do you say that this song was not a hit? I used to listen to this song quite often in illangai... Malai malar was also a popular no.
Horses for the courses - no one would have done this better than VJ. ezhu swarangalukkuL, nan paadikkondE, sugamana raagangalE, azhaku malar aada. All these songs reached their height only because they were sung by VJ. My all time fav. Vani song is mEgamE, mEgame.
Saravanan... this mp3 has good potenital for easy clean-up (I hear blank sequeneces with noise), so, suitcase-la pottu anuppi vacchidunga, clean paNNidalaam.

bb / Saravanan -
Absolutely spellbinding. How does one describe something that can only leave the description wanting? How does one better the commentary by Saravanan, and the certificate of class issued by the one and only Kannadasan? How does one take fireworks to Sivakasi? Or boondhi laddu to Tirupathi?
As you can see, even analogies seem cliched in their inadequacy...
This is the first time I have heard this solo, and how empty my listener history would have been without this! One can go on an on about VJs mastery and magnificence in this song. How VJ owns this song - with authority, clarity, nuance and stupefying splendour. A perfect realisation of imaginary sound, heard in the mind and felt in the soul. Distilled Divinity - that's all I can muster.
While it is undeniable that many of MSV's later 70s compositions (all that came in the wake of Aboorva Ragangal) on the "ragamalika" (and other)structure went VJs way - many have been mentioned - and I can add Thottilil Thodangidum Thalaattu, Ulagengum Nam Veedu, Mazhaikkalamum Panikkalamum Sugamanavai, Sandhanak Kudam Ondru Sadhiradudhu, Nadhamenum Kovilile...
These are merely the marathon for the marathoner.
The impact of such songs and the flawlessness of the renditions also say the rise of the "classical" mystique (and "charge" too) of VJ. Her music training may have made such essay a walk in the park for somebody who knew the ins and outs of the karnatak tradition, but they were also (and are to this day) framed as a "limitation" by some.
For every Kannan Kovil and Sugamana Ragagangal and Ezhuswarangalukkul, there is a Neerada Neram Nalla Neram, Naane Naana, and Kannan Arguae Aada Vaendum.
For every Megame Megame, there is a Pongum Kadalosai, Kandaen Engum and Enullil Engo...And for every Illakkanam Marudho there is a Orey Naal Unnai Naan, Enni Irundhadhu Eedaera, Mazhaikkala Megam Ondru...
And all these songs I have mentioned - including the SOTD - have that "thanithanmai" that KD identifies - a signature of a master, and the spirited felicity of voice that moves from Katcheri to Kadhal to Kalakkam to Karppanai...
For every song that (necessarily) typecasts VJ as a "technically astute" singer, there is a song that breaks free from this mould to prove the impossibility of containing such virtuosity in what is both a limited and limiting term.
This Kannan Kovil Paravai is at home in many a sky.

Saravanan;
I vaguely remember the film "AkkA". I think it was a Madurai thirumaran film. (other fims of Madurai thirumaran Mayor meenatchi,Soothattam, Sontham, Ilaiyarani rajalakshmi, Vayadi, Thirudi, Thaay veettu seethanam,Roshakkari, Sonthangal vaazhga, Badhilukku badhil and some more...)KRV was his favorite naayagi. All his films center arond the heroine and her brave efforts and sacrifices.
In akka KRV is a carnatic singer. Latha is her younger sister, I think.
This song "kaNNan kOvil paRavai ithu"- KRV sings in a mEdai cutchEry.
all the 3 songs for KRV.
"maalai malar pandhalitta mEgam" honeymoon song with a hillstation in the background.
KRV meets and gets married to Jayganesh a womaniser and a rogue. She comes to know of this only after the marriage. She tries to reform him and all her efforts go in vain. Finally when Jayganesh tries to seduce the younger sister KRV kills her husband. A tailor made role for KRV. As usual she performed admirably. The songs were good. But the film flopped. May be the choice of Jayganesh.
Jayganesh, as a single hero was not so popular among the masses.Other heroes of his time Vijayakumar, Shivakumar, Muthuraman, Jay and Ravichandran with KRV were able to give hits.
Later Jayganesh had a similar role in Sridhar's "azhagE unnai ArAdhikkiREn" .In that film Latha was the elder sister and Subashini (Jayasudha's sister) was the younger one.
Is there one more song in akka?
eppadi vaazha vanthArO?.
Do you have any information about this song?
Another Jayganesh - KRV film "magarasi vaazhga" had good songs; but failed at the box office.
aththANi maNdabaththil muthu muthu dheepam
isaith thuRaiyil enakku kadhal vEgam.
kanda muruga
That film storyline had 2 sisters KRV and Jayasudha.
another Jayganesh- Sujatha film had some good songs by MSV .
mANikka veeNaiyin nAdham
paal nilAvil thottil katti Adu kaNNE aadu
rarely heard melodies.

May I take the honour of stamping this song as ordinary, with all due respects to the music director, singer, 'vimarasasists' et al.
'uppu perAtha pAttula, mUchchukkum thummalukkum munnOru vimarsanamA?'
Whether it is one of the ragamAlikAs genre composed by the great MSV, or one sung by the 'copybook-Dravid' VJ;
pAttu mudiyum pOthu oru aplAs kottAvi - 'Hey Ram' pAththu mudichcha udanE vantha athE 'peeling'.
Embellishing every element of the song with expressive rAgAs is a science; the feeling-package is an art.
When the mass stumbles to locate the song with their imagination/thoughts it is for sure
dry -
sundry.
AR Rahman once remarked - 'Mastery of RAgAs alone is not enough to compose great songs'.
yada yada
blah blah
Achch ooChcH

Ps: Alias specified (undiluted truth), is my Blood Group.

B-ve, do you think the swarams at the end were unnecessary to the song, making it unattractive to you by the time the song finished?
