All times in EST +10:30 for IST.
Drawbacks of a person gives way to others to come in.
Ex : IR drawback is not keeping good relations with others.
With this drawback also He was able to rule about 25 years means it is only the talent.
Now also He can come back and rule if he shows bit
of attention.
Now comming to the drawbacks of ARR ( A wind )
1. Lack of creativity
( already there r talks about his repeated tunes )
2. Late composition.
People will not wait for long time for listerning to new albulms.
They will try other options as He could not give
enough albulms.
There r many possibilities for othere MDS to
enter in the time gap.
Even directors cant wait for too delay in release.
They will wait if they get all hits from him.
If they get 2 / 3 successive flops they will get idea of trying with others.
3. Dependency :
He wants the director to be skilled to extract the good in him.
It is clear that He can give hits only to big directors.
4.Giving preference only to directors.
I cant give clear explanation as I dont know the facts.
There may be others which I may know as I dont know him in person.
Ther is one advantage to him from his second drawback.
He does only some films and any MD can get 4 / 5
films every year.
As the albulms come with delay,It takes time for people to decide his downfall.
If he gets one click again hopes will be there,
For his next few albulms it takes some years.
I am 100 % sure that If ARR could give albulms
fast, He would have been decided by now.

//"Bharath, I can never never never agree with this. Conversely I feel ARR should take up more such projects which have no other market value other than his music. "//
I will give u a straight analogy... look in terms of the perpective of that analogy and plz explain...
students scoring 99 % are given admission to anna university. students scoring 90% and less are admiited only to provate engg.. colleges.
long time assumption :
1) % reflects ability of the student.
2) Anna univ is a quality institution and it will give the best infrastructure, where good students can benefit and give more quality output thro them
Ur Argument:
1) Good students will survive anywhere so they neednt always get the best institution
2) Let Anna University prove its worth by admitting students with less academic credentials and then let it try and make good engineers out of them.
mapping: Anna University = ARR
Good students = Big Names (producer or director)
I think point 2. under "long term assumption" will give out the best possible result
and the points under "u'r argument" is always second best.
under "u'r argument" #1 is incorrect and # 2 although a decent( at best) idea is not good bcoz then there is no contribution from the student and makes u feel if they deserve a place there or not.
Again I re-iterate.. if ARR should give a hit all by himself, why not do it in an individual album but waste time on average people...
this is a competitive world.... survival of the fittest
b.t.w the # reg. IR and ARR scores I gave were approx.
I assumed that for 25 years if IR scored 40 movies a year ( I think 40 out of 100 tamil movies a year cud be probable), this is an average only
and in 10 years ARR cud have given 7-8 movies a year (hindi, telegu, malayalam included)
anyway the #'s are besides the point and the intent was how jmuch % of it was quality product. But I agree with "normal man" that this is arbitrary and cannot be substantiated...

bharath,
just go thru the archives-you will see hundreds ofthreads disacussing technicalities in IR's music-his use of raagas, wcm, innovations in bGM(in fact this thread has just a few postings by ARR fans.all you ARR fans have got to post is how good his recording sounds.this is repeated in a thousand different postings.you can conveniently forget history.compared to stalwarts like MSV, IR or KVM,ARR's place in TFm is like a hot air balloon.grossly exaggerated.
) puthiya mannargal
2) uzhavan -prabhu-top hero
3) pavithra -subhash,quite a popular director
4) en swasa katre -arvindswamy-considered quite cool at that time
5) ratchagan -naagarjun,miss world sushmitha sen
6) rhythm -ido vasanth, arjun sound like small naes?
7) May Madham -
8) Love Birds -vasu,prabhu deva-greatly hyped movie-deservedly bombed
9) Mr. Romeo -same
10) Puthiya Mugam -revathi's own production-she was one of top heroines at that time
11) Gentleman ( both shankar and KT kunjmon werent famous then) -kunjumon had already produced about 30 movies in malayalam before venturing into tamil-he was ,for all purposes, a big name.
12) vandi solai chinnarasu-satyaraj,suganya were all very popular at that time.
the fact remins that ARR cannot perform without big names.
padhinaaru vayadhinile, mullum malarum, aval appadithaan, koilpuraa, panneer pushpangal, payanangal mudivadhillai, pallavi anupallavi, kan sivandhal mann sivakkum,manikkuyil-these are some movies i can think of offhand withoy big names.
he is miles ahead of the presnt generation of composers in terms of his oceanic knowledge of music-whether it be carnatic or wcm or folk.just read the pages at http://www.lolluexpress.com for a comprehensive review of IR's handling of carnatic music.

okay goin by ur description of "big names" I guess there is no movie that does not have a big name
so if i rip thro ur list then
padhinaaru vayadhinile,- big heroes kamal-rajini
mullum malarum,- big director
panneer pushpangal- again big director
payanangal mudivadhillai - big director
pallavi anupallavi-big producer cum distributor
u simply had to pick something on the list of my movies for the sake of picking and u made revathi a top heroine and also having 30 malayalam movies as aproducer as a big thing... reasons like "considered cool" also is untenable....
see I dunno how u can call me an ARR fan, given the fact that I like IR more than ARR. But strangely u expect IR fans never to talk a word against him or to deify him and belittle others..
although I hate this IR-ARR silly arguments by his fans as I expalined in the previous postings... its not for nothing that IR-ARR arguments r considered cliche.. its bcoz they r interesting that they r discussed so much..
if an ARR fan called IR's place in TFM as undeserving... imagine how ridiculous it wud look and how obviously biased that opinion wud be... so is ur calling ARR a hot air balloon

'panneer pushpangaL' was the first movie by bharathi-vasu. Again, I think 'payaNangaL mudivathillai' is the first movie by R.Sundarrajan.

1) quantify genius
Being able to write the notes (originally) and compose, orchestrate a song of caliber "andhi mazhai pozhigirathu" or "En vaanile" from Jhonny.
2)substantiate
If any MD is able to come close to what he has done in the 2 songs listed (atleast) above, I would accept him as a musical genius above IR.

Normal Man,
1) I like IR
2) I think musically he is a genius albeit underperforming
3)IR is more experienced than ARR
4) Style of music is different
5) Times are different
still all the above is my own opinion and not facts much similar to ur quantification and substantiation...
if IR had made his debut in 1992... i doubt if he wud have considered composing songs like "andhi mazhai" and "en vaanile"...
where is he now.. what is he doing? Is he above all TFM that he cant put fire in his belly and make music with passion.
I think cassate sales are facts and they dont show IR in good light. and even a HC IR fan wudnt say IR was as good in 90's as he was in 80's
so in conclusion I can only say that u think the average man who buys music is less intelligent than u. I think u r wroong in that aspect....

Bharath,
To counter your argument, I am sure even if ARR had made his debut in 1976, he wouldn't have been able to compose gems like Andhi Mazhai, Enn Vaanile etc. It is beyond his capacity. Things like style of music being different can be given
as excuses for ARR.
And why do you have to mention that you like IR more than ARR when all you are doing, is putting down IR in whatever way you can.

Bharath,
Also FYI.
Padhinaru Vayathinelae - BR was an unknown
director. Both Kamal
and Rajini were very new
that time.
Mullum Malarum - Rajini's fifth movie or so as
a hero. Was considered a risky
proposition that time. Mahendran
was an unknown director.
Pallavi Anupallavi - MR's first movie as a
director. He was virtually
unknown then.
Also IR's success rate in working in movies with new faces is very high and noone has ever come close to that leave alone ARR. Infact ARR's movies with new comers have been miserable flops.
And that is the reason he has avoided working with newcomers after 99.
