Another good song to start a day with.
I am reminded of the good old days when I was struggling to learn playing rythms in guitar. This song was a teacher's delight for the flowing 'swing' and my teacher while teaching would himself get carried away by the flow of the song. I practically learned how to play 'swing' in a guitar with this beautiful song and I have always enjoyed playing the variation in the anupallavi and saranam.
Later in a year at REC, Trichy, Culturals some college performed this song which was followed by another college performing another beautiful song (Hindi, Gungu naare... from Aradhana), which incidentally had a similar flow as this song. Needless to say, both those songs mesmerized the audience.

KRV should have fallen for the voice rather than the "bathing"RaviC.Scintillating stuff!
I am able to visualize the transition from MSV-TKR style to IR style in this song.GKV's style is evident in IR s intial offerings.A similar styled guitar phrases in "Naan pesa vanthen" for eg.Both MSV-TKR and IR were really fortunate to have such a talent as their associate. As late as "En jeevan paadhudhu"i have seen GKV's daily payment vouchers for the arrangements.IR, i heard, took care of his master, the man who shaped and horned his skills and who laid the foundations for his new style ,well till the end.
GKV's "Ponukku Thanga Manasu" and Vijaya Bhaskar's Mayangigiral oru madhi paved the smooth road for the transition from MSV s era to IR era.

Song of the Day: en raagangaL from mudhal iravu.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/enraagangal.rm
- Sung by S.Janaki. Music by IR.
- This lively song is vintage Ilayaraja. The pallavi of this song is very catchy and is followed by a typical charanam that doesn't lift the song up. SJ's singing is full of life and energy. I was listening to her "lalallaala" in the charaNam in a loop today for a while :)
- The film itself is a late 70s one, *ing Sivakumar and Sumitra. The film boasts another IR classic, manjaL nilaavukku indru orE sugam, by Jayachandran and PS, which was featured in SOTD last year.

bb, thanks a lot for this rare, lovely song. SJ's voice has an infectious joy and the interlude music also has the required buoyancy.
Saravanan, thanks for "thoduvadhenna". What a coincidence!!!

nagarajan - you hit the bulls eye. The song is very very similar in tune and flow to "woh hai zara.." of Laxmi-Pyare.(Shagird or some such crap movie)
I liked the tamil one better than the L-P-typical dholak-infested hindi version though.

Thanks for the rare Ilayaraaja number. I am hearing it for the first time. SJ sounds sweet as a nightingale and IR's composition is very simple, almost ghazal-like in the charanams.

purv, I agree. I like this song beter than manjaL nilaavukku. my gripe with that song is the oooo ooo train sound that doesn't fit the mood of the song at all :) (may be the situation was first night in a train, but .. )

Well, I just like the melody to 'En Raagangal...' better, though 'Manjal Nilaavukku' had some very nice interludes. Just my personal inclination!

May be distant cousins ,every time i try to hum this song
"En Raganagal ingu ellam padalgalE" i follow it up with S N D P M G M G R S from Colonial Cousins by Les and Hariharan!I feel they merger is complete.
Bageswari link?Mythila ,Vijay,MS can explain.Simple and delightful song.May be i would have loved it more had the charanams were a bit slower to suit the pallavis pace.Uncomplicated interludes.

Song of the Day: Sindhip pOgum mugilE mugilE from Various Composers.
- In the amateur composers thread, Udhaya posted his song, sindhippOgum mugilE mugilE. Several people tried their hands at tuning Udhaya's lyrics. The output, the discussions and the talent pool that this exercise has showed up are amazing.
Udhaya's lyrics is here:
http://newtfmpage.com/forum/3987.6611.16.58.22.html
- First off, Kaumudi's take:
http://www.geocities.com/tangirags/Sindhippoagum.mp3
[MS]Kaumudi, It has been a long time since I heard anthing worthwhile in a scale close to saraswathi. Excellent !!
[Udhaya]Kaumudi, I've been a fan of your voice since the first time I heard it. As a non-native Thamizh singer, you're not that far off and needless to say worlds better than TFM imports from upnorth.
[Sridhar Seetharaman]Man! Your splitting of words is amazing. It is so easy to follow the song. Reminds me of an ARR song. With little more refinement this sure will be a hit. I love the "Mugilae Mugilae" and "inidhae Inidhae". Pallavi is extremely catchy.
[Vijay]Kaumidi - pretty neat composition/rendition. Hamsanadham, being a very pleasant scale, is a great choice for this song IMO.
[Mahati]Kaumudi, Nice effort and perhaps with good singing ability, you've rolled out this tune with ease. As a listener, believe me I am happy about this tune and it's very pleasing and perhaps will be the same for every listener ( serious or casual ). Due to my MFS ( Melodic Familiarity Syndrome ), pardon me to comment that you have constructed the melody phrases identifying with the children of yaman/kalyani scale rather than of nithimathi. Hence it didn't strictly sound to me as hamsanadam. Dhaivatham is a non-issue as it was part of this raaga which is avoided in today's hamsanadam.
- Next came Vijay's version:
http://dhool.com/ms/jam/vijay_sindhi.rm
[MS]Vijay composed a tune for "sindhippOgum mugile". And he joins the band of composers trying their hands in tuning preset lyrics. This composition of his based predominantly on brindavana saranga is interesting because of the way he splits the words and unpredictable structural changes that he has produced. I liked it immensely. Composed and sung by vijay. A simple nice background using keyboard is also present in the song.
[Sridhar Seetharaman]Oru murai dhaan ketaen. Appadiyae padhindhu vittadhu tune.
[IR]Vijay!!!! Where were you so long!!! Amazing tune. I cannot believe my ears! and good rendering too... I never knew you could sing this well!!!! Congrats and keep up the good work...
[Mahati]Vijay, I like your composition for sindhi...Superb and it captured the feel of rain immediately -> I found it more situational and thematic to the lyrics. Besides I think this thread has discovered a new composer ( filmy ) who can contribute to this
- Rjay's attempt:
http://www.geocities.com/rjaymidi/RJAY-Udhaya-Sindippogum_v2.mp3
[Mahati]RJ's interpretation of rain drops is very nice...Especially I like the intro that you presented...perfect coherence to the theme...Rain Drop pallavi line can be mapped with a sound note for each drop and letter in lyric like - Sa Ga Pa Da Ni Sa Ni Da Pa - Pa Ga Ri Sa - Sa Ga - Sa Ga. Very Nice and Filmy touch...
[John]Your composition is nice. very pleasant to hear. Guitar part has come up well too. who played that!! ;) ?
[Da Vinci]The guitar strum was realistic. Couldn't believe you got that quality in a key board.
- MS' tune to Udhaya's lyrics:
http://dhool.com/ms/jam/sindhipogum_MS.rm
[Rjay]Listened to your tune. Good tune. Charanam is especially very interesting and unpredictable and fresh.
[Divakar]MS very nice tune indeed....and ofcourse nicely sung as well! THE choice of using both chatushruti and Shudda Dhaivatam(charanam) makes the tune interesting and opens up for some interesting harmonies as I see it.
[Vijay]MS, alternate lines in the charanam throw up surprises by refusing to be mere extensions of the previous line and also succeed in conveying a variety of emotions apart from the energy possessed by the pallavi. Very well composed and sung.Has the mood and feel of "Panneeril nanaindha pookkal".
- Rjay redid it twice:
Sindippogum - Brisk version
http://www.geocities.com/rjaymidi/RJAY-Sindhippogum-Brisque.mp3
And here is another different feel:
http://www.geocities.com/rjaymidi/RJAY-Sindhippogum-Ballad.mp3
[Kaumudi]Your ballad tune was more likable to me. Since you have the instruments, it sounds even more melodious.
[Udhaya]Finally listened to your two recent versions. The first one nails the jubilant mood right. The tune was complex in that I couldn't rember it well to hum it back. Perhaps this is good for it invites repeated hearing to uncover the whole thing. The ballad I liked immediately because the rhythmic strumming walks the tune away with a tender hand on its hip.
- Divakar's version:
http://artists.1sound.com/DivakarBhowman
[IR]Did you use live instruments?? The tail end piece was simply superb.Tune was very pleasant and melodious and good singing Radhika.
Recording quality was also very good.
[Udhaya]Excellent string arrangement in your version. From a ghazal-like start it takes me to a magical place like a prayer room during monsoon.
- Ungal Nanban's tune:
http://www.geocities.com/ungal_nanban1/sindhi.mp3
[Kaumudi]Interesting twist to the hitherto produced soft melodies - a pop, fast paced song. Yeah, as Udhaya points out, this could be a fun song. I noticed a lot of IR touches in the beat style and the composition style itself.
[Udhaya]I would've never imagined just a drumbeat accompanying my lyrics. So, your outsider perspective has produced something unique. A bit of tasteful orchestration and creative vocals can make this a fun pop song. Keep at it.
[Radhika]That was an interesting departure from tradition in your interpretation of the lyrics. liked the upbeat mood it created.

That is indeed a surprising choice for SOTD bb. The excercise itself was an eye-opener for me since it introduced to me various ways to look at the same structure of a given set of lyrics. Thanks on behalf of all for putting it up here.
