Folks..that article is just a summary of posts in TFM. I compiled it from a thread on 'ARR's - song making style'. Many people like Srikanth, Udhaya et al contributed to it. It should be credited to musically savvy posters like the above.
I think Sam is making an important point about the bass guitar. IR's style is 'old-fashioned' like in 'basso continuous' in baroque music. It is used for harmony. ARR uses it for rhythm (modern trend).
Some other tidbits you ARR fans will like are - in Iruvar ARR has added the 'record noise/pops and clicks' (like the sound you hear when playing a LP record) to make the song sound old/'period'.
He also uses instruments to imitate natural sounds. In, 'then mERku paruvakkARRu' song, cymbal crashes imitate the mazhai sAral.

Kiru...
i didn't notice that ! Now I realise.
I also recall having heard actual amplified rain drop noises too.
After the release of Gentleman, I remember seeing an intervew about ARR on DD Metro. One film critic explained how for the first time he had heard in IFM, natural sounds being synchronised completely with the song....he was citing "Chiku Buku Rayile" - the train sounds that synchronise with the beat of the song.
The other instances where I have heard ARR's master-blending of natural sounds into his rhythms were :
- Muqabla (Kaadhalan) - Typewriter sounds sync with the rhythm
- Pachaikili paadum ooru (Karuthamma) - Hen sounds add to the rhythm
- Thenmerke Paruva katru (") - mentioned above my Kiru also had amplified synth water drop sounds going with the beat of the song
- "kokku saiva kokku" (Muthu) - Looped Hiccups of the actress with which the song starts continues in the background at least in the first pallavi?.
Any other instances ?

Cosmo /Kiru
The rhythms of "Palakattu Machanukku" is another innvoation using the guitar.
The distorted(overdrive) effect on guitar and the regaae beats ..I had never thought they could gell so well ( Mustafa song ).With Regaee one would expect a wind instrument as the main player but that was a real novelty.

whatever innovations rahman does, it is pretty much those avoided by IR or any composer who respects himsself.
cheap tricks these days achieved by school kids.
the most important outcome of innovations is it appropriate for the song and is the song great, rahman is basically pullin a fast one on the whole of india. look at the films made and look at the music, made by boys for boys and girls.

Bombay Dreams craze takes on the West
Washington, September 3: Declaring the musical Bombay Dreams an entertainment craze in London and hinting it may cross the Atlantic and come to Broadway this fall, one of America's top TV stations has exclaimed: Goodbye Hollywood, hello Bollywood!
Bollywood, as Bombay Dreams shows, is breaking not just on the screen but on stage on London's West end, said NBC-TV.
Its lavish extravaganza, songs and dances have wowed western audiences, the channel said.
Indian movies like Monsoon Wedding, a celebration of love and the importance of family, have already become big hits in the United States, NBC noted.
Pointing out that Indian movies with their violence and vamps and songs and dances have been huge hits in Asia, it said Mumbai has the biggest movie industry in the world, making twice as many films as Hollywood.
In Britain, said NBC, Asian culture has had such an influence that it has become part of the mainstream.
Indian fashion has become hugely popular. Indian dance in aerobic classes and Indian comedy have also become big hits, it said.
Bombay Dreams is one more sign that "Bollywood brilliance is becoming a global phenomenon," NBC said.

I wud like to list some of ARR's interludes/GMs I enjoyed most:
1. The sound of the breaking glass in Pudhu vellai mazhai (Roja) - make me feel as if I am in the chill
2. The electric guitar he uses in the interludes of Thenmerkku paruvakkatru - It makes one feel as if the rain has stopped after a splash - and when the beats start to continue, it is as if like the rain starts all over again
3. The violin bit before the "Maalai nilavum maragadha manjal" in Pachchai nirame
4. The whole of Bombay Theme (wherever it appears as an interlude) - I guess this should be one composition most used in ads / progs in India n' abroad
5. The sound of raindrops in enmel vizhunda (may maadham)
6. The water song in Rhythm - the interludes and the way the song ends with the violin bit are stupendous, to say the least
7. The flute bit in "vellai pookal" in KM
8. He has used the suprabatham start in flute so effectively in maarghazi poove
9. The BGM in Iruvar when Ash gets married - superb
10. The BGM for may maadham
11. Both the interludes of Jiya Jale in Dil Se…..
12. There is a superb interlude in the song "Pyar ye jaane kaisa hai" in Rangeela - the violin bit transfers u to another world
13. The sitar interlude in "Yaaradhu" in Mr.Romeo
14. The sax interludes in DUET
15. The flute bits at the start of Putham puthu bhoomi (Thiruda Thiruda)
16. The flute bit in Tanha Tanha (Rangeela) - {a similar flute portion was found in Ullasam by KR ( Konjum Manjal) - a case of KR inspired by ARR?}
I can go on and on and on.....
Can anyone add to the list?
