thanks to bb and palanikumar for the song.
I have always been in love with swarnalatha's voice. Most of the songs she has sung for IR and and AR Rug-man are hits, i suppose.
This partcular song ever reminds me of a old song ' mAthAvin kovilil' ( achhaNi). i dont know
why.
one more song, a tittilating number, Or uRangum sAmaththilE ( puthuppatti ponnuththAyi), i think she has sung along with uma ramanan, is it correct?

It's too late, anyway:
LV had one more obscure movie called 'ninaivE ennai nErungaathE'. One popular song ('at leaset in Mars') from this movie is 'sangamam nam sangamam
sangamam priya sangamam...' by KJY and KSC

puthuppatti ponnuththAyi?
Has the most hilarious scene of recent times apart from Chimbu's movies.Watch Napolean and Mr.Radhika play Nadaswaram & Mr.Radhika trying to do a "shamugasundaram" by attempting the rhythm using the upper portion of legs.
I hope Sivaji did not die of watching this scene.
swarnalatha was "Uma Ramanan-with-expressions". a good singer....

Song of the Day: maanaadak kodi from mudhal vasantham.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/maanaada.rm
- Sung by S.Janaki. Music by Ilayaraja.
- MS writes:
A multitude of songs in the raga madhyaamavathy has been tuned by IR. Seems like he never gets tired of this raga like us who do not get tired of Ramya Krishnan. This film featured the utter looser paNdiyan with this evervescent beauty
who still continues to enthrall us. I guess this film came in 1986. It has been 18 years and she is still reigning !
Well, I am supposed to be talking about the song, ain't it ? :-) This song is a confused mix of madhyamavathy and shudhdha saveri using grahabedham. The humming oozes the flavor of shudhdha saveri and charanam is very characteristic of madhyamavathy. You can find that you can digress from the pallavi into "kovil maNi Osai thannai" very easily. SO can you digress into "vaNNa nilavukkuL nilavingu" from the charanam. Another notable feature of the song is the metric construct. Every line is in a different sandham. Well with ramya and vintage IR orch'n you do not need food :-)

Just on a funnier note. When this movie was released C~P was 2 yrs old and curses 1 yr old.
Now both C~P and curses are big time fans of ramya krishnan :-))
What an actress!!!!!!!
btw was this the first movie in which Malaysia Vasudevan acted?

nice song.. i used to have the kadhai vasanam for this movie long time back... sathyaraj was a perfect fit for the role as gunguma pottu gownder.. and i think MV was vettaikara gownder..
Other notable songs 'aarum adhu aazham illai' and 'summa thodavum maatten vandha vidavum matten'...coming back to ramya, i'm speechless..:D

You missed the best song of the movie, "ponni nadhi veLLam ingu". Everything about that song was outstanding: SPB, composing, orchestration, picturisation (wink, wink). Simply tremennnnnndous.

Appealing choice from the numerous and varied IR-SJ collaborations of the 80s! SJ's opening humming and the enticing prelude set the mood for this lilting number. Somehow I tend to mentally bunch this song with another great SJ song from the same year 'Kaathal vennila kannil vandhadhu' from Lakshmi Vandhachu (MD: Ravindran).
In the film, this song is sung by Nithya (Ramya K), when she returns to her village. She gradually falls for her father's servant Ponnusami(Pandian), and the complications that follow form rest of the story. Pandiyan doesn't have much to do in the proceedings that are largely dominated by Satyaraj and MV. Chandrasekhar and Mahalakshmi acted well in their finely etched roles.
The story and dialogues were by Kalaiamani; Manivannan handled the screenplay and direction. Sabapathy's camera work fetched acclaim.
Besides the SOTD, SPB's 'Ponni nadhi--vellam indru--pongum inbame-- sondhame' is a wonderful song. Other songs were 'Aarum adhu aazham illai' (IR and Uma Ramanan versions), 'Summa thodavum mattom' (SPB & MV, beginning with 'Vedakkozhi adichu vechom, vidhamvidhamaa samachu vechom') and the sequel by SJ 'Summa thodavum maatten'
Ramya K had made her debut the previous year in Fimco's Vellai Manasu, and followed it up with a miniscule role in Padikkathavan. In 1986, besides Mudhal Vasantham, she acted in Pudhiya Poovidhu.

Surya, banner peyar gnabagam illai :(
But you're right, MV had acted in Kolusu and Oru Kaithiyin Diary in 1985 itself.
Btw, MV was also the MD for Kolusu, which was directed by K.S.Madhangan. Rajesh, Saritha, Suresh & Sashikala were the actors. The songs that I recall are 'Machaan kannu theekuchi' (MV/SJ), 'Kasthuri maane kolli malai thene' (SPB/VJ) and 'Vaadhiyaar namma pakkam thaan' (MV/VJ).

Song of the Day: maalai iLa manathil from avaL oru pachchaik kuzhandhai.

- Saravanan writes:
‘maalai-- iLa manathil aasaithanai--’ from avaL oru pachaikkuzhanthai. Sung by S.N.Surendar and Shobha Chandrasekhar. Music by Ilayaraja.
A song that is seldom heard these days--from the vintage years of IR.
Annai Velankanni Creations’ avaL oru pachaikkuzhanthai- 1978 starred Vijayakumar and Bhavani. I believe this film marked the directorial debut of S.A. Chandrasekhar. And that is all I know about the film. Hope someone will chip in with elusive details like the lyricist and the other songs in the film.
* * * *
Kalaimaamani S.N.Surendar made his debut in tfm as a child- he was first heard (along with his brother S.N.Sundar), lisping ‘A for apple, B for biscuit, C for chocolate--’ (Saadhu Mirandaal/ 1966) and followed it up with songs like ‘varavu ettaNa selavu pathaNa’ (Bama Vijayam/ 1967) and ‘aalayam enbathu veedagum’ (Thamarai Nenjam/ 1968). And as for his sister Shobha, she was first heard demanding ‘Odi pidithu viLaiyadaa oru thambi papa vENdum en kooda’ (‘maharaja oru maharaNi’/ Iru MalargaL/ 1967) followed by ‘nalla pErai vaanga vENdum piLLaigaLE’ (Nam Naadu/ 1969). In the mid 70s, the siblings Sundar, Surendar, Shobha and Sheela formed a light music troupe (named Lalithanjali after their mother)
‘maalai iLa manathil’ perhaps marked Surendar and Shobha’s reentry in tfm as adult singers. Over the years, Surendar got to sing many songs for MSV, IR, S-G and GA, and many of his songs became quite popular. In the meantime, he also became a successful dubbing artiste, especially for Mohan. His career as a singer enjoyed a grand resurgence with ‘Oomai Vizhigal’, and along with Sasirekha, he emerged as the favorite singer of Manoj-Gyan.
Shobha’s career as a singer never really took off. She did sing a few songs in the films directed by her husband S.A.Chandrasekhar, and some of them did enjoy ephemeral popularity like ‘pagalil oru dhaagam’ (Sattam Oru Iruttarai), ‘meenodu meen vandhu’ (Alai Paayum Nenjangal), ‘deivam vandhadhu thEdum varam thandhadhu’ (Puthu Yugam), ‘oru kuLLa nari pullukkattu’ (Sattam Oru Vilaiyattu). She went on write the stories for many of her husband’s films, and then took over the director’s mantle for films like Nanbargal (1991) and Innisai Mazhai (1992). Innisai Mazhai (MD: IR) also had her singing a great duet with SPB ‘dhoori dhoori manathiloru dhoori’. Though not a great singer, she is definitely made for better things than yelling ‘thottabetta roattu mElE mutta barotta’ (Vishnu) and ‘oormiLaa oormiLaa KaNNilE kaathalaa’ (Once More), that too with her son! But to give her due, she can hold the record of being the only singer to have sung duets with her brother, and also with her son.
Btw, their sister Sheela has sung a lilting duet with Unnikrishnan ‘thendRal vandhu thendRal vandhu’ (MD: Deva) in the (probably) unreleased film Manasu that was also produced by her.
In later years, Surendar and Shobha did get to sing a few more duets together like ‘ethanai naaLachuthu’ (Kudumbam/1984/GA) and ‘azhagE nee azhalaama’ (Puthu Yugam/1985/GA)
Shobha and Surendar are among the very rare brother-sister duo to have sung duets together. SPB & SPS were the other pair. In Hindi we had Nazia Hasan and Zoheb Hasan, and in recent times Shaan (Shantanu Mukherjee) and Sagarika have sung together.
* * * *
It was perhaps at the director’s insistence that Surendar and Shobha bagged this opportunity to sing for IR. I still remember listening to this song on Radio in the late 70s, and wondering at the unfamiliar voices. This song was quite frequently aired in those few years and later disappeared from circulation. Perhaps the fact that they were singing their first major song had made Surendar and Shobha slightly nervous, for I feel that they both sound a trifle diffident in this song.
Nonetheless the song remains a noteworthy effort of IR—his imaginative arrangements in the mesmerizing prelude and interludes (hark at the accordion add to the allure!) usher in so magnificently the mood of the seductive evening in its entire splendor --throbbing passion, stimulating foreplay and the culmination--all find radiant depiction in his wondrous canvas.
