In the movie, Ganga Gowri (1972) which was produced
and directed by BR Panthulu, MSV has tuned a nice
song in amrutha varshini raagam. The song starts
as azhagiya mEgangaL vAnil and it was sung
by S Janaki. In a recent saptha swarangaL program
on SUN TV where SJ was the judge, SV Ramanan asked
her to narrate something very interesting that
happened in her life with regard to music. She
said that once there was severe draught in Madras..
no rain was seen for a long time and on one day,
after a recording session she was going in her car.
She thought of this Ganga Gowri song in amrutha varshini
and sang it with a lot of feeling. When she finished
singing it, there was a short rain (thooRal) and
she said she was totally amazed!
Pretty interesting!

When I heard TMS' voice in 'en kELvikkenna badhil' I thought, he must also have got the national award for the best male singer for 'Uyarndha Manidhan'!
BTW, SL a slight digression back to 'Kaaviyath Thalaivi', what ragam is "en vanathil aayiram" based on?

When I again read the above postings, I found the discussion on Kaaviyath Thalaivi was not yet over. Especially the songs, 'oru naaL iravu' and 'en vaanathil'.
BTW, udhaya, there are only 4 solos by PS in the movie. The other one "kavidhaiyil ezhudhiya kaaviyath thalaivi" is a duet by PS and S Varalakshmi, so this movie is no contender for any record:))

karthi,
Even 4 female solos must be a record.
After hearing the songs in sk's link I realized why I hadn't listened to them before. First of all they didn't get any airplay on the radio because they were Qawali type songs not at all common in TFM, especially back in the 70s. While I truly enjoyed the lyrics, music and singing in "En vaanaththil aayiram", I couldn't help feeling that the song sounded like a dubbed song.

Could someone please discuss the songs from Padithal Mattum Podhuma. I think two gems from that movie are:
Thannilavu Then Iraika
Naan Kavignanum Illai
I don't know what the others are.

udhaya, do you mean to say there's a hindi number in the same tune as "en vaanathil aayiram"? Then why should it sound like a dubbed song? I don't understand. BTW, 4 solos by PS in the same movie was quite common those days!

Karthi, this coming from a person who disappears when it is very convenient ..yellaam kali kaalam:)) Yen vaanaththil aayiram is a toughie, sounds like 'Sindhu Bhairavi' at certain points.A very good composition with Sarangi dominating, as is normally in the case of a Mujra song. As an aside, I have always liked Mujra songs in TFM like 'vantha vargaL vaazhga' (engiruntho vanthaaL) and 'neeyaga ennai thEdi varuginra nEram' (PS) (movie ??). The rhythm (tabla work) and the sarangi interludes are remarkable. The Hindustani style taans make generous use of R1 making it sound like Chakravagam at times.
My favourite is 'oru naaL iravu' for its power. But I dare not listen to this song during good times, it is an intense dampener, can be awfully depressing.
Trivia...it is set to raag 'Rasikapriya' (72nd Melakartha) probably the first song in IFM to be so. Madan Mohan followed up with 'Tum jo Mil gayE ho'(haste zakhm),set to the same raag, within a couple of years.
Mridangam is the main percussion instrument, with morsing. Shehnai starts the interludes and the disturbing effect is maintained all through the interlude. The interludes end with violin on the ascent.
PS's singing has to be mentioned here, retaining the impact throughout, be it high/low pitch or emoting, very good indeed !!!

Aarambam indrE aagattum is a peppy, romantic number set to raggae beats. The melody is strong enough to survive all on its own. The song starts and ends with the same melodious humming.SPB's singing is very fluent and incorporates sangathis in the stanzas, brings in variations when lines are repeated. I have always liked the I interlude which starts off with an interesting violin piece followed by the organ. The tune for the second stanza is different from that of the first and there is a subtle introduction of congo. The stanza ends with humming in seconds by SPB and LRE. The song has a lot of energy, good and a pleasing melody line, apt orchestration and waltz beats. The bass work was barely discernable in the anupallavi section, but quite clear in the stanzas. Adequate bass work .All in all, a song I would like to possess.
Guys, my choices for the next review 'Kalai KOyil','sivantha maNN','kanthan karuNai','uththamapuththiran' (the Sivaji starrer). What say ?

SL, I wish I could join hands with you in your analysis becasue you seem to be doing it single handedly - which is in one way more taxing and in the other way, you don't want to disturb your spontaneous thoughts by forcing yourself to interpret a song just for the sake of this thread! But sorry, I am no where near to your musical knowledge so I can even think of helping you! I think there ought to be someone who could throw in their "musical" comments too! Srikanth?
As for, "Sivandha MaNN" is the first song to be analysed "Pattathu RaaNi"?

Karthi & SK, if you call that as technical analysis, I can only be happy about it :)). To be very candid, I have not been able to express all that I wanted to owing solely to paucity of technical terms in my musical bag :)).
Sivantha MaNN is one of all time favourite albums for the sheer 'weight' each song carries ,the variety and musical creativity. There is absolutely no need to allow the songs to 'grow' on you. 'Oru NaaLilE' is my favourite and a real gem, probably a perfect example of what a true melody is, no formula/rules, no specific raaga adhered to, superb intro/prelude and good interludes unfortunately cut short in the radio version. I have always marvelled at the perfectly placed anupallavi and seamless link back to the pallavi. This is very much unlike certain songs where a dholak/tabla roll is what takes the song to its pallavi, eg:- varaaga nathi karai Oram (though otherwise, the song is entertaining).
PS peaks, quite a lot of variations and is on a roll throughout, very much in command. As a contrast, TMS's style doesn't gell too well with this Hindustani type melody and struggles in the lower pitch. The pallavi is set to waltz and tabla is introduced in the interludes, great work. All in all, a great song in all respect.

SK, thanks for pointing out KD's imagination in 'Paarvai..'. He probably got reminded of his lost love again and just like in 'avaL kavignan aakkinaaL yennai' (kalangaLil avaL vasantham) and 'en paadal avaL thantha mozhi allava' (paalum pazhamum), the stanza ends with 'indru naanum kaviyaaga yaar karaNam...'. As an aside, any idea which movie this KD song is from
thozhuvathu sugama
vaNNanththOgain mEniyil vizhuvathu sugama
....
....
....
pazhagiya kaathalai eNNi paLLi araiyil azhuvathE sugam enbEn yaan
ithai arinthavar arivaaraaga...a true KD classic.
Sorry for the digression.

anyone for puthiya paravai? has a couple of killer numbers in "enge nimmathi" and "unnai onru ketpen". PS simply kills me in the second song. of course, "aha mella nada mella nada" (sivaji in see-tru sattai and all), "sitttuk kuruvi" and "paarththa gnaabagam illayo" are all classic songs too.
