TFM really took a turn with the arrival of this duo to the field. While TFM has been in existence before Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy, it is after their debut that TFM really kicked off.
Songs pre-VR suffered an early death even by the 60s, whereas VR songs are most popular even today, some 40 years later.
Added to their success story is the fact that nearly ALL their songs became popular and still remain so. This is no mean achievement with no other MD having ever reached their success rate.
Let us use this thread to recollect, remininse and celebrate this great duo and their contributions to TFM.
Hope to get interesting quips from knowledgeable people like Manisegaran, Sathya Keerthi, Saravanan, Uthaya, OISG etc etc.

In an interview featured in the souvenir magazine brought out to felicitate the VR duo in Singapore in 1999, Ramamoorthy indicated that MSV was nothing without him and that he himself was nothing without MSV -- obviously reiterating their joint parnership and efforts for the VR compositions.
In the chapter on VR in the tamil book on Thirai Isai Alaigal by Vamanan, it was reported that TKR was furious when only MSV was shown in a scene in the film, Server Sundaram, orchestrating the music. It is known that in the VR compositions, TKR also held the forte in the orchestration department - a view also reiterated by a famous playback singer who confided in me about this sometime back. Thus, it is not surprising about TKR being upset.
Mani Sir: you mentioned that TKR composed for about 40 odd films after his split with MSV. Bur according to the souvenir magazine above, which listed all the VR, MSV and TKR films, TKR composed for less than 20 films:
1966
Madras to Pondicherry
Maraka mudiyama
Sadhu mirandal
Then mazhlai
1967
Aalayam
Engalukum kaalam varum
Pathathu raani
Naan
1968
Mundreluthu
Neelagiri Express
Soapu seepu kanaadi
1969
Thanga churangam
1970
Kathal jodhi
Sangamam
1972
Sakthi leelai
1973
Prarthinai
1975
Avaluku aayiram kangal
1984
Antha June 16'm naal
1987
Ival oru pournami
One could see that TKR was slowly being sidelined by the tamil film industry -- he bitterly complained about this in an interview in 1975. The problem with all his films is that most did not run well, and it was difficult to continue in the field when, at the same time, false rumours was also spread about him.
To be fair to him, the following compositions by TKR, which I can recall, are melodius:
1. Ennadi chella kannu ennam enge pooguthu : Thenmazhlai
2. Enge neeyo seithiyai solla: Thenmazhlai
3. Vizhiliyal kathal kaditham: Thenmazhlai
4. Arulvaye nee arulvaye (Bala Murali Krishna): Sadhu mirandal
5. Koil enpathum aalayame: Aalayam
6. Kagitha odam: Marakamudiyama
7. Pothoomo intha idam: Naan
8. Kallap paaravai kannuku inpam (PBS/PS): Engalukum kaalam varum
9. Thananthaniyaga naan vantha pothu: Sangamam
10. Kathalan vandhan, kangalil sendran: Kathal jodhi
The VR compositions are immortal classics -- everytime I hear songs such as: Kangal enge (Karnan); Thendral orangiya pothum (Petra maganai vitra annai); Pon en pen (Police karan magal); Unai paartha pazhlutha kangal ponai paarthu palikirathu (Magane kael); Maalai pozhuthin mayakathilae (Bhagyalakshmi); Nenjam marapathilai (Nenjam marapathilai); Paalvanam paruvam kandu (Paasam), and many of their other songs, I feel that VR are two geniuses from another planet who have come down to Earth to specially serve the tamil film industry!
It does not serve much to debate who is better in the VR duo. Both MSV and TKR have joint intellectual rights for the VR compositions, which ushered the tamil film music in its golden era. It is a pity that they split in 1965, especially when they were going so strong, with hit song after hit song.
Let's enjoy the songs that VR have given to the tamil film industry. It would be good to talk about the beauty of the VR songs.

rs- excellent selection of songs by TKR. 'Kaathalan vandhaan, kanvazhi sendraan, kanngalai moodu painkiliye' is also on my ever-favourites list. It is from Moondrezhuthu, and not from Kadhal Jothi. Sung by PS-Ponnuswami.
Some other great songs by TKR:
1.Vasantha kaalam varumo-Marakka Mudiyuma-PS-KJY
(what a song! Suratha's lovely lyrics, TKR's mesmerising score, PS's enchanting voice, with KJY's sad humming, all go to make this an awesome song)
2.Vandhaal ennodu ingey vaa thendrale-Naan-LRE ( a superb adaptation of 'Come September', this song fill surely find place among LRE's best solos)
3.Thiruthani Muruga- Neelagiri Express-Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi-PS
4.Deivathin koyil deivam thaan illaye-Moondrezhithu-LRE-Sarala
5.Naan pirandha naattirkku-Thangachurangam-TMS
6.Petra manam siraiyile-Thangachurangam-S Varalakshmi
7.Sandhanakkudathukkulle-Thangachurangam-TMS-PS
8.Ummele konda aasai-Kadhal jothi-Seergazhi Govindarajan
9.Saattai kaiyil kondu-Kadhal Jothi-Seergazhi Govindarajan
10.Uranga koodathu- Sakthi Leelai- MR Vijaya
11.Vinnile minmini oorvalam-Ival Oru Pournami-MV-VJ.

I forgot to add in my previous post that the music of the following songs are mind-blowing, especially the preludes of the first two songs:
Kangal enge (Karnan)
Thendral orangiya pothum (Petra maganai vitra annai)
Pon en pen (Police karan magal)
Unai paartha pazhlutha kangal ponai paarthu palikirathu (Magane kael)
Maalai pozhuthin mayakathilae (Bhagyalakshmi)
Nenjam marapathilai (Nenjam marapathilai
Paalvannam paruvam kandu (Paasam)
From which planet did the VR duo come from? TFM must have been fortunate to have VR, who gave it its only golden era in the 1960's. Even late TNC leader Moopanar commented not long ago on the golden era given by VR, with a remark that he longs for the VR era -- check the web, and you can probably find that link.
The background to some of the VR songs are very interesting. I share a few here:
1. Once Kannadan gave a pre-written lyric to several music directors, asking them to compose music for it. All felt that the way in which the lyric was written makes it almost impossible to compose mettu or music for the lyric. Finally, Kannadasan gave the lyric to MSV/TKR. The VR duo came out with the mettu and music in just 30 minutes -- according to an interview by MSV featured in Kumudam or Ananda Vikatan.
And the song: Athan enthan, from Paavan mannipu!
2. After singing a particular song, PBS commented that it would be almost impossible for any music director to ever come out with music which would be able to match the prelude to the song he had just sung for VR.
And the song: Naalam naalam thirunaalam, from Kathalika neramillai!
3. One of the immortal hindi film songs is Laud gaya gam ka zamana, by Latha Mangeshkar and Hemant Kumar. Not many realize that the music directorss are VR - in their second hindi film, Naya Aadmi in 1956. Check this out in this forum under, "Would Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy be able to shine in hindi film music".
4. When the VR duo came to Singapore in 1999 to be felicitated for their contributions to tfm, several of their songs were sung by SPB, AL Raghavan and S. Janaki. At one point, SPB mentioned that he will be singing a VR duet with S. Janaki. Thereupon, S Janaki commented in astonishment in tamil: PB Srinivas in the paatai romba arumaiyaga paadirunthaar, ippo neenga intha paatai padupogirael endru solgirale.
And the VR song: Pon enapaen, from Police karan magal.

Nice to be back with Rasigargal!
In Mundrezhuthu the song "Pettiyile pottathu" by TKR has this unique M1 and M2 in Suddha Dhanyasi( Is it called Madu Kauns?).This song had a good tune but i don t know why it fell short of a hit?
Aalayam by Tirumalai and Pattu was a great movie.Much before Kalyanakalam by Robert Rajasekar this is about the happenings in a single day in the life of a principled & honest man.Except for the title song by Seergazhi i don t remember other songs. Were there any?
The comic strip involving Nagesh and Bakoda Kadar was a good one.
Seeing TKR s s list there are some Ravichandran movies which were hits...Naan,Madras to Pondichery,Mundrezhuthu and Kadhal Vaganam.
Vasantha Kalam -It was after Kadhalikka neramillai this was one KJY song till the MSV s magnum opus "Deivam thantha veedu" came in 1974.(I dont count Kalayana oorvalam,Thulabaram,Annai Velakanni due to their Malayalam origins).
As i had requested can someone get me "Kunguma pottu kulunguthadi"(from Idhu sathiyam?) .the song has a nice kummi style and not heard much.

OISG- there was one catchy song in 'Moondrezhuthu;- though I don't remember the opening lines, it had a refrain 'Musafir gaana, en muthu muthu maina (?)'- filmed on Thengai and Ravichandran.
Reg. KJY, Thulabaram is from Malyalam ok, but Kalyana Oorvalam and AV were tamil originals, I thought? Anyway, some more early KJY songs:
1.Aasai vandha pinney- Konjum Kumari-1963 -KJY, B Vasantha-MD-Veda
2.Paruvamothi pazhagumpothu-Panam Tharum Parisu-1965 -KJY,SJ- MD-Chellamuthu
3.Alankaram kalaiyaamal anaippathu thaan enna kalaiyo-Namma Veettu Lakshmi-1966-KJY,LRE-MD-MSV
4.Sugam ethile-Parakkum Paavai-1966 -TMS,KJY,LRE-MD-MSV (KJY sings for Chandrababu!)
5.Uruvathile oru manithan, ullathile oru pravai-Yaarukkaga Azhuthaan- -KJY-1966-MD-Ramanan
6.Paadi parandhu varum kuyilo-Rajathi-1967 -KJY,PS-MD-KVM
7.Sri Mahaganapthi-Porchilai-1969 -KJY-MD-R Govardhanam
8.Aruvimagal alaiyosai-Jeevanaadi-1970-KJY,Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi-MD-V Dakshinamoorthi

10.Thanga thoniyile-Ulagam Sutrum Valiban-1973 -KJY,PS-MD-MSV
I didn't include Veeranganai and Malainaattu Mangai, as they might fall under your 'Malayalam' category!
