I just heard the soundtrack of the new Hindi film DevDas. Ismayeel Darbar (who debuted with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) is the only quality composer out there, no doubt. The attention he gives to melody and orchestration, choice of singers is commendable and makes him stand out from the so-called successful MDs like Anu Malik, Nadeem-Shravan and Jatin-Lalit. Wish he comes to TFM as well to pose some healthy competition to the new gen. MDs. What do you think?

After watching the old devdas in almost 3 languages like Hindi, Telugu and Tamil...it'll be hard to many of us to accept these kind of songs for such a period film. But again the director will mesmerize with visuals over there...so go with your own judgement...for me they are very normal...nothing great...without any bias...This is not another Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam kind of great music...

Listen to Raaga.com version than the MP3 version at the mentioned links...Yes the recording quality has made the difference...I thought it was a very noisy music...but indeed it's a nice album...
Best ones - Bairi Piya and Kaahe Chode...Mesmerizing music...fantabulous music...

Shreya Ghoshal is not related to Anup Ghoshal...I mean she was a runner-up at TVS SareGaMa a national level contest for amateur singers which was very popular until recently. The jugdes that were invited were all legends...Naushad, Anil Bishwas, Zakir Hussain, Shivkumar Sharma, Beghum Parween Sultana, P Susheela, S Janaki, Ravindra Jain, Jagjit Singh......and the particpants sang really really well. I had liked Shreya's voice very much....and she did a fabulous job with all her songs. She has sung very well in this new movie and indeed the music is delectable. Hope Ismail Darbar continues his trend of giving us quality music.

Ismail Darbar's music is subtle and sensitive and has traces of Khayyam. They are both "thoughtful" musicians, and are not giving to commercial pressures (I hope that lasts for ID, as he is a new guy on the block.)
Thanks for the info on SG, AVR.

I seriously doubt that this musical will become a huge Commercial hit. But, ID has done a great job. I think he did little compromise and has given music for the period. Hope SLB doesn't sodhappifies.

Exceptional score I would say. ID's compositions have a fine classical feel, making excellent use of the voices of the female lead singers as well as the chorus, and the orchestra. This kind of a score could not have been expected at this time from any other HFMD. The songs also provide the scope for some fine dances from the female leads of the film that is going to be one of the highlights. And what more, ID has his own distinct style. Director SLB (HF's MR?) could not have asked for anything more, although, some may feel that a heart touching "Hum dil de chuke sanam" kind of song missing. An album that the HFM audience will not want to miss. All that remains to be seen is whether SLB can make a film anywhere close to the standard of this album. And having seen SLB's work in Khamoshi and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, I would expect this film to have a very poetic portrayal, and be a stunning visual treat - another Devdas classic.
Shreya Ghosal is a fantastic find. My guess (bet?:-)) is Kavita's voice for Aish and Shreya's for Madhuri (with exception to Kaahe chhed mohe ? a likely background song). "The Theme" is by Monty and so bgm could be his too.
A musical score that should not be sothapified at any cost by the makers of the film:-) It remains to be seen how consistent ID can be in giving such good scores.
However, ID's music has a certain native (northern) feel, and so, it should be a welcome to TFM with little changes.

Kaahe chhed mohe is a nice classical song...and kavitha rises on the occasion! Good singing. Its got a tarana recited by pandit birju maharaj and madhuri dixit...(she is a trained kathak dancer)

So Madhuri plays Paro, AVR? (is this another remake of the Sarat Chandra Chaterjee classic?)

Naaz,
Yes, it is yet another remake of the classic Devdas. Madhuri plays Chandramukhi and Aishwarya Parvati (or the funny sounding 'ParO').
AVR,
I think Kavitha is singing for Madhuri and Shreya for Aishwarya. Kavitha is SLB's favorite since Khamoshi and she has done a remarkable job with her singing in this album.

digression - a great score in recent times by Khayyam is the non-film ghazal album Shaguftagi....poems by Kaifi Azmi set to music by Khayyam, sung by Kavita, Alka, Roopkumar Rathod and Udit Narayan. Alka sounds heavenly in "shaguftagi ka latafat....". A good album worth having in ur collection. As usual, Kavita has been given the more intricate compositions in this album. The album also has one patriotic song amidst all those ghazals.

AVR - Many thanks for the tip. I will get the album this week (if it is available in the local music stores.)
OISG - Andha Shahrukh sariyana over-acting paervazhi!
(SK has been anointed as the new-age Dilip Kumar -the original Devdas.) The thing about dramatic actors is tact and restraint: Knowing how far to go, in going too far. SK knows no such boundaries (IMO) :-)

hey guys
i have a question not related to this thread
I have always wondered what brief MD's give to BIG artists like Ustad Sultan Khan, Pandit Vishwamohan Bhatt, Prasanna, Kadri etc.? Because in the songs, the bit that they play lasts hardly for just a few seconds. Wouldn't they feel a bit disappointed about the whole thing?

One small correction .. somehow I feel, the ORIGINAL devadas is A. Nageswara Rao of Telugu cinema .. you should see his devadas which came around the same time ( or before???) dilip kumar's .. I think ANR beats him to the pulp .. I even shudder to think of shahrukh in this role ..might bring intensity but he cannot generate those loser(feeling betrayed with dollops of self pity) looks you need for the role of this kind ...

y??, the "original" Devadas is the Hindi version...wait....wait....this came in the late 30s, early 40s period, starring KL Saigal. Being an "original" drunkard must have helped him in this role. Guess the Pankaj Mullick-RC Boral team must have been the composers. The Dilip Kumar version had SDB as the composer, again with good songs but the Tamil/Telugu version scores over the Hindi versions in this aspect.

>>> The Dilip Kumar version had SDB as the composer, again with good songs but the Tamil/Telugu version scores over the Hindi versions in this aspect.<<<
what is the name of the telugu/tamil version of devdas. who composed the music, and who sang the songs.
BTW...i have found a website with links to some really exquisite (HINDI) classical songs which I would love to share with you....if you dont mind. Please drop me a mail at the address given here.
I remember having heard the songs of Idhayak amalan (pardon spelling errors) with an aquaintance who was a PS fan. I loved the PS songs in this movie. She has put in something "extra" in her songs here. I later came to know that this movie has the same story as MERA SAAYA, which also had 2 endearingly sweet solos by LM. There was another movie with the same story in marathi with songs by asha....but if found the sublimity missing in her renderings in that movie.
gosh do I digress too much?
anyway...about KL SAIGAL's devdas...pardon me, but I dont like listening to those old 30s and 40s songs...somehow. I know his voice has been critiqued as having great depth, and range and of course its obvious. You dont acquire such a high status if you arent a singer par excellence...but still i find it tough to listen to him. Just my taste!

since i havent seen the movie in telugu, i cant comment about anr beating DK. anyways, IMO dk was an excellent actor and i liked his performance in devdas.
